View Full Version : Don't like Vista? MS decides to let you (brace yourself) DOWNGRADE

Today is apparently a good day for funny stuff:
While Microsoft is still pushing Vista hard, the company is quietly allowing PC makers to offer a "downgrade" option to buyers that get machines with the new operating system but want to switch to Windows XP.
The program applies only to Windows Vista Business and Ultimate versions, and it is up to PC makers to decide how, if at all, they want to make XP available. Fujitsu has been among the most aggressive, starting last month to include an XP disc in the box with its laptops and tablets.

Heck, Fujitsu HAS to be aggressive. Maybe this is their last ditch effort to get back customers?

Awesome! Now I can finally rid vista off my laptop without having to go through a shit load of crap.

Vista's great. Drivers aren't. Show me one instance of a problem of the OS that's not caused by doing something idiotic or driver incompatibility and I'll paypal you a dollar.

It refuses to run some of our PC games?
Wait... that's doing something idiotic...

Vista 64-bit...the kernel disables any kernel patches/functions.
We can't build trainers that heavily modify other processes and Microsoft said there is no way of turning that off.
I also accept Checks/American Express.:p
nah I like Vista it's alright. :)

Yes you can, you just need to ensure that your process is at an equal or higher integrity level

and what if the game is already above?
It was kinda a joke...I just read it partially and quickly..I don't even think it disables the kernel functions like Read/Write process memory.

No, it doesn't, but it DOES require an adequate integrity level. You can get around this by just saying:
icacls <trainer name/path> /setintegritylevel H
There is no way that, if the game was started by you, you couldn't then access it :)
For a process with the System integrity level you have to do some things that are a little more hackish, but it's still quite possible.

I told yas ages ago that MS where having trouble pushing vista onto new buisness's because XP does everything they need the computers to do, and do it well.
i think i was basically tied, hung and shot from a few of u guys :-3

So? All new OS's suck ass when they're in the pre-service pack period. My sister got a laptop with Windows XP in 2001, and it ran into numerous issues too. I go the careful way by having one OS per hard drive on my desktop - the HDD that contains my school files runs on Windows XP Home Ed SP2, and the HDD that contains most of my games runs on Windows Vista Home Premium.
My laptop doesn't have Vista yet and is on XP Home Ed SP2. I probably won't change the OS on that though.
Eventually, when I grad and go to university, I'll sell my desktop and laptop, and pick up one of those desktop replacement style 17" laptops, with Windows Vista Ultimate.
But yeah, it's good that customers at least have a choice when they want to buy a pre-built system. It's stupid to buy a pre-built desktop unless you're not a gamer, but some people are like that, and they deserve more choice of OS. The only time when gamers should buy pre-built PCs is if they want laptops, and those still have a little problem with the OS selection, which MS is remedying now.

here's a good analogy:
a console is only as good as it's games.

Try enabling ready boost on a jump drive, then put the computer in hibernation with that jump drive in the slot and the system wont boot back up. Also, you should notice how if you use a graphics card with allot of VRAM, try running some games and notice how fast all your physical memory gets eaten up and pray that your games don't crash after vista eats up all your memory. This isn't a driver issue, this is a vista issue.

I've been using Vista HP since Dec of last year, on my MacBook Pro and have no real complaints (expect for the default disk defragger). Any problems that I had could be configured to my liking which I promptly took care of in the first 24hrs of getting it.

Never had a problem with it myself, either. When I tell people I run Vista they bitch and say "Theres too many errors! Too many compatibility issues!" Bullshit, I haven't run into a single issue with it. When I ask them what isn't compatible, 99% of the time they shut the fuck up, and the other 1% they make up some random bullshit. Nice try, fuckers.

the bugs will get fixed, we all know that but that istn the problem.
All OS's have allways had problems but in the end they have come through for buisness's with faster loading, easier use and a greater range of options to choose from.
but this isnt the Case with vista for buisness's. it's slow... and it will always be slow unless u pump thousands of $ into the computers to make them run it well, or untill all the hardware becomes unbelievably cheaper.
And apparently (from what i've heard, bro worked in an IT department for a property developement company) Word, publisher and a few others have small changes that are effecting the older workers. they've had to re-learn parts of it to do their job.
Microsoft have just been a victim of there own success. Vista has no drawing cards for corporate or buisness use.
the only thing that is appealing is how the Hardware interaction has changed and Dx10. And thats based solely on and for the Gamers... which are a very small market of the industry.

The problem I have with vista is not its various bugs and twitches, and compatibility issues most of which is ignorable, but just allot of intrusive behavior of the operating system on me, the user. Mostly things which are irritatingly and ridiculously hard to disable and also with it disabling all of the features you wanted to upgrade to it for are trashed. For example, search indexing. If I leave it enabled, every now and then, some searchindexer.exe pops up in the task manager and starts churning and sucking up 99% of my CPU and causing my system to shutter constantly and making just doing something simple like homework or playing a game frustrating because my mouse is lagging every few seconds the the UI of the application freezes for a few seconds because of this searchindexer.exe running. I can't even end it with the task manager because it just pops back up and continues its churning like some piece of spyware or trojan. I could turn it off by disabling indexing, but then I can't use the search feature anymore, one of the very few new and actually useful features of vista. Another infamous example is UAC, everyones favorite vista enemy. It took me freaking weeks to figure out how to disable that crap. But after disabling it, I get balloon pop-ups every time I boot telling me to enable it, something thats also pretty irritating. Also, without it, my PC is less secure than XP. All the claims made that Vista is more secure than XP is basically implied by having UAC enabled, without it your screwing street hookers without condoms.
Thats just a few of the main examples, but there are also lots of small specific things that just irritate me when using it. Mostly personal preferences like the complete rearrangement of the display properties into separate applications requiring extra steps to just do something simple like changing screen resolutions, disabling the "date modified" column by default when viewing most folders (mainly image and music folders) in list view forcing me to have to navigate through 1000s of different columns in a tiny list box to find the date modified one and re-enable it every time I want to sort a folder by date modified (my most preferred way of organizing files) when before if it was disabled, just a simple right click and selecting date modified enabled it, and having to get rid of the internet explorer shortcut in my quicklaunch toolbar that always places itself back on there and in front of every other application every time I install windows updates. I could go on forever with the small details of little things that just build up irritation when using vista and it all accumulates into a frustrating user experience for me. Other people may not be bothered by these little things, or are too distracted by the pretty bells and whistles vista has strapped to it like Aero, but to me as someone who uses their computer not only for fun and games and internets, but as a professional workstation as well.

I agree. I had a great time with it in the beta. My only compliant is, as someone said, with certain regularly-used features hidden by default.I thought the redesign was the right way to go and long overdue. My wife hates it though, and refuses to use it. XD
