The last time I recorded my desktop for some reason, I used GameCam, at least I think I did.

Now I have Vista and GameCam + Vista = HA it won't work.

Now I MIGHT be confusing myself by saying that GameCam records the desktop too?! I don't remember, but I am going to need one soon.

Thanks for your time...I used google, I'm just using the wrong keywords

FRAPS records the desktop...


Since the Vista Desktop Window Manager (DWM) runs through DirectX we have also added a new option to monitor the desktop under Vista. You can now take screenshots and record video from the desktop just like any other game or 3D application.

camtasia studio is good, but will not let me record what I hear in windows, fraps will let me do this.

-Fraps has better performance.(only 30 sec recording non-registered)

-Camtasia studio has better editing options.(30 days full functional trail)

No. I'd rather use Camtasia Studio them WMM. Movie Maker makes inaccurate splits on your videos, and it has horrible rendering capabilities.

It think that VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=170#body) is ok for editing, and it's free....

I mean CamStudio, not some Camtasia PoS. It's a freeware app and it runs great!

I used to use Sony Vega for editing, I don't know if I still have it though...
I remember referring to the help a lot =(

And FRAPS? Huh...

Oh yea, I do, I just meant "huh" as in I didn't know it could do that because of the DWM thing.

You know CamStudio is just the recorder from Camtasia ripped out and made into a freeware app right?

Yes, but the point is that it's free.
