A few weeks ago, I was at the Nebraska vs. Nevada game. I made my up to the section and got seated with a few friends. After the first quarter, I saw something that I will never forget. A soldier, dressed in his fatigues, was walking up the stairs when a young boy stepped out in front of him. The kid looked up at the soldier and motioned him to bend over. When the soldier got down on a knee, the boy hugged him and said, "Thank you." People around him started clapping and cheering. It was absolutley phenomenal.

Now, I understand that the video is kind of old, but I ran across it today and it really hit me hard. I know a lot of people on this forum don't agree with the war in Iraq/Afghanistan and dislike President Bush quite much. I just wanted to remind you that even though you disagree with things that are done, it is completely unacceptable to even think of disrespecting our military personnel. These men and women fight to protect our country and without them, you might not even be able to have an opinion. I know this might seem a bit random, but please take it to heart. Thank you.

It's better to have a country of people that disagree with each other, but it's even better if they don't get vicious when they do. I'm reminded of what returning Vietnam soldiers had to endure at airports with people spitting on them. Not only were they possibly psychologically disturbed from the war, but now they have to have their own countrymen not say, "Glad you returned back alive!" but, "Bet you feel proud you baby-killer!" and spit on them.

I'm reminded of that family that plagues soldier's funerals back home with their pickets that say, "Thank God for dead soldiers." People like that need some serious help.

Really, if you really knew the soldiers these days, I doubt something like that would ever happen. They're human after all, plus mostly americans, and BCT isn't as effective as it used to be in removing the slum from people's minds -_-.

Not saying I'm perfect, but at least I take my fellow soldiers into consideration before I act :-\

Well... I'd like to qualify that by saying there are exceptions, so I can't agree with "completely". But for the most part I certainly agree.

I have respect for any soldier who respects what he is doing. I've seen/heard of some pretty stupid things soldiers have done and have little respect for them. The ones actually trying and knowing they need discipline are the only ones I can say good things about.

People like that are scum and should be hauled out and shot, no questions asked. Seriously, I don't give a shit about their families or friends, there is no excuse for sinking that low. Perhaps the army should picket their funerals with "Thank God for dead shitwads".

Cmon Ross, tone it down a little. Sure they're assholes and all, but death is a serious thing. I'm sure there are some reasons or other that they feel the way they do, and just because you disagree is no reason for them to deserve to die. Now that's just thinking like hitler, and the soldiers well knew the freedom of opinion is one of the things they were protecting going to war.

*sigh* I only said it because of friedmetroids comment, sort of a double comment there though I guess I didn't say I was replying to both. I personally agree that it wasn't really under a threat, but it was more of an arguement that the soldiers knew that it was one of the freedoms they were "protecting" (there put it in quotes so it's sort of half hypothetical or something). If you didn't understand all that don't get your panties in a bundle, I'll just stop.

You have 'normal' people, who have some respect for pretty much every other 'normal' person, and then you have those bastards, who are more likely to go off preaching mass murder of anyone different from themselves than a 'normal' person. Thinking like Hitler would be killing because you dislike difference; in this case, it'd be ridding the place of those asses to prevent them from doing so. I'd rather see the ignorant bigots go than the more tolerant people they usually pick on.

The reason they feel the way they do is because they're filth.

no, those fuckers need a bullet.

It's not the soldiers fault that we are in Iraq. it's the fuckers at the top. like Kornman once said,

trying to remember what i typed first :\
My dad when he was over in america said he had massive problems trying to explain his stance on the war to ppl he met/ looked out for him.
Apparently the War has people seeing it in extremes, it's either Hate the war and the soldiers, or Love them both. With very Little middle ground.

Have u guys had any experience with ppl seeing it this way?

I got one better. Instead of doing some kind of MASS clap session, go out and vote for someone who you feel is right, to show your appreciation. Do your research on them, see what their background is; has the candidate ever been in the military, if so, what branch? etc. Don't abuse your right to vote by just randomly selecting someone on the ballet :saddowns:.

Not a US Citizen? Show your disapproval of the leader of our country, and NO one else (unless there is a direct connection with he\she), and get your fellow aliens foreigners to do the same. Make a big deal out of it. If the people that can vote see the outer countries disapproval is the same, but see all these politics WITH power to do something, not doing anything, then they know who needs to loose the next election by loosing their vote. Help us, help you

I personally agree that it wasn't really under a threat

When I said that, I was talking about the American Revolution... not World War 2 or anything else. Though the Continental Army wasn't exactly made up of real soldiers, they did indeed earn Americans the right to express their personal opinions without fear of imprisonment.

There are some real douchebags in the army.

I hope you mean:

"Don't disrespect military personnel simply because of the fact they are in the armed forces."

Seriously, there are people in the army because they like to kill, there are people in the army because they are poor and futureless. There are commanders intrested in being effective and saving their men, and then there are puppet generals.

There are little to no political issues where you should feel correct being this black and white about.

What do you mean?
They are poor and futureless because in order to be able to have an obscenely wealthy 1% you need a lot of poor people....on a local level there is no other job oppurtunity for them. (AKA auto plant shut down ect...)

Also I didn't mean to make a list of reasons why people are in the army, merely to show people who can be and can't be disrespected based on their military service.

I don't disagree with the respect the troops thing, in fact, I agree whole-heartedly. I am just suggesting that is hardly anyone's place, much less anyone on this forum's place to make such broad and divisive statements.

I have deduced that if there are more than five consecutive posts by people with over 1k total posts, the thread therein has gone off topic, due to the history between all of the older members. This can be observed in about any general discussion thread, and even in some more specific threads (Gallery /Question/Post Your (whatever) Threads, for example).

On topic: I find it hard to have a stance one way or another on this topic due to conflicting realities. The first post is extremely evocative of how it ought to be, where as a huge contrast to this is the movie Jarhead, which depicts SOME (not ALL) of the reality of the situation. I can't have a good opinion because I know too much. All of the stark realities of this situation eat at me deeply.
