View Full Version : Ethics of teleportation.

ok, lets say we live in the year 2050 and teleportation has just been invented.
now this tele doen't scoop you up from one point in the universe and put you down in another, this dissasembles you to the atomic level, sends all the matter in your body to the reciever and re-assembles you.
would you use it?

After JUST being invented? No. But I'd certainly use a tried and proven version of the idea.

I wouldn't. Me being dissasembled sounds really odd, not to mention that I don't know that the person who comes out won't just be a clone of me, just made from the matter of the original me. Something about that possibility just rubs me the wrong way.

This should be an interesting thread.
No, at least not for humans. But you can go ahead and beam me that apple. Texrat probably knows why too. ;)

I would rather go through a teleporter that has a plasma screen, and sends you through to a second plasma screen with the power of....well...transfer.
I really cant think of a better way to explain that.

It would have been tried and proven before they let you use it anyway ;p Nobody would be allowed to go through the thing unless the makers were absolutely certain it would be safe. That's why I vote yes.

That's not how it works. Your body would need to be scanned at the atomic level and recreated elsewhere instantly. That of course would leave you with two of yourself, so the scanned body would need to be vaporized.

Oh my god, I was literally just thinking about this.
That kind of teleportation would basically kill you. While to others it seems like a person goes in one end and re-appears in the other fine, I doubt they would be the same person.

Yes to teleporting, no to subatomic reassembly.
Dimension folding ftw.

October 10th, 2007, 07:23 PM
assuming it didn't "clone" you, I would do it. because that way Zeph, you'd get one version of yourself that got teleported, then your real self which get's vapourized

Nope. I'd rather wait until some people have gone through with no side effects.

Personally, I don't like Teleportation in any form but one that actually puts YOU in the place you want to go, instead of scanning your structure and sending a copy, then destroying the original. The sent one won't be you, and you will die in some kind of killing device, never to see your destination.

Hell yes, I cant stand walking, is just like waiting, but worse. I wouldnt use it if it was still in testing or wasnt common practise, but say like 5 years after it was working fine I would. I hope they work some things out like that in the future.

That movie was confusing, but I liked it. Saw it when it came out
Heres a question for you all: If there were teleports that worked like you could stick your hand through and it would come out the other teleport, would you get 2 of them really close together facing each other and then proceed to have anal sex with yourself?

Exactly, but the real you would be killed. Your conscience wouldn't be transfered. You would walk up, ask to be teleported, and see yourself get cloned with the clone at the destination. The new you wouldn't mind so much, but YOU yourself would then get vaporized. You would never get to visit the destination.

@Neuro: dammit, lol gets overused, so you switch to rofl, and that gets overused so you switch to lmao. anyway, the meaning of "roflmao" has been diluted somewhat, but in this case it is literally* true.
@The topic: Nah, I'd never do that, because I'm too unsure of what is actually me. Sure I'm confident that if I went in, I would come back out in that nobody else would be able to tell the difference, but would the consciousness that is me be retained? Would a new consciousness with my memories and personality take over? Would "I" just stop percieving the universe because "I" have lost contact with my body? Or is "me" nothing more than my molecules, in which case it's ridiculous to worry about it? IDK, I just wouldn't want to risk it.
Although, I'd use the hell out of it for sending packages and stuff.
P.S. Portal is short, but sweet. I love it!
*literally. I had to have my ass surgically reattached.

No. Because with my luck the damn thing would screw up and wouldn't vaporize the original me. And then there would be 2 of me, and the other one would probably try to kill me, cause hey that's what I would do. Somehow the original me just couldn't bring myself to kill the second me. And then....
Fuck to be honest I had this all thought up and I lost it :/

tbh.
I would only consider using this form of teleportation for transporting non-living things (though plants would be ok).
I would never use it on myself because it's killing my conscienseness (unless I was feeling suicidal but cbf to do it properly).
