Can you insert a normal cingular sim card into an iphone and it will work or do you need the special iphone sim?

The iPhone cannot legally be unlocked. Apple and AT&T have a contract that limits the iPhone to them, not to mention support for visual voicemail and such. If for some reason you would want to unlock your iPhone, which I would not recommend yet, visit the iPhone Dev Wiki (http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) and learn more.

What law says I can't legally unlock an iphone to work on another network? Last time I checked, the DMCA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIPO_Copyright_and_Performances_and_Phonograms_Tre aties_Implementation_Act#Section_103) says I can.

The current iPhone is locked to the U.S. networks.

SIM card based iPhones will come out around 2008 for other countries.

What hes asking is if he can take his standard AT&T sim card and use it in the iphone, or will he need a special type of card to use it. he has the right network already....

Oh I see, you're trying to use another American SIM card on your iPhone. I don't know if it's compatible with Cingular (I'm not familiar with these American networks, since I use a GSM-based phone) without hacking.

Here's what I found on google:

Cingular=AT&T, AT&T=Cingular. Now that we have that established, it would probably be best to go to your local AT&T store and ask them.

Oh yeah, I forgot Cingular is AT&T. Oh and Jahrain, Apple has a multi-year contract exclusively with AT&T. Yes, there was a ruling that said any cell phone can be unlocked, but due to the exclusivity of the agreement it's still undecided on the iPhone.
