View Full Version : Random Lag?

Okay, this is really weird.
I would be minding my own business playing Halo 2, and at random times I would get huge amounts of lag. Usually when I play there is no lag at all and everything is running verry smoothly. The lag I get isn't like regular lag that sorta comes, and goes.. This lag will be there for like 2 or more minutes and then leave... Then it comes back at random times within 2 - 15 minutes...
These are my computer's stats...
http://i15.tinypic.com/536244h.jpg
When I play it's on the lowest detail, with the lil '-vsync' part added to the shortcut. I also play in Windows Classic theme and run nothing else. Oh, I also have UAC disabled too.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem, and does anybody know how to fix it?
Thanks!

What DX10 video card are you using?
Vicky
October 30th, 2007, 06:24 PM
And are you on a network used by more people? Or do you have other software running that uses the internet?

Actually it might not be a DX10 card since it says I have DirectX 10 also...even though I KNOW I don't.
What video card do you use?

No, I don't have other software running using the internet.

I just got this right off the box, Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT - 512MB...

The 7300 GT isn't bad, it has 8 pipes and 128-bit memory as opposed to 4 pipes/64-bit in the GS and LE versions. So you shouldn't have too much problem. Also the 7300 GT is a DX9c video card, he just has the DX10 driver installed.
You are playing on lowest detail? Well, this is Zeph's theory:
If your framerate is too high, H2V's engine can't keep up and will start to stutter and jerk. Your numbers will look very large, but the actual game will be fluctuating like mad.
Raise your settings (slightly), toy around with AA a bit, until you can "lock" the framerate somewhere around 40-80...I have the same problem.

Ahh.. Sounds reasonable... I'll try that soon and see if it works... Does Fraps work on Vista? Because I would like to have a program that shows the framerate like it does in Fraps that works on Vista...
Thanks a bunch. :D

Yeah fraps works on vista.

Aiight then, I'll check it out and tell you guys if it works. :D

Sorry for the double post but, I put it on the Highest detail and Best AA, and still lag. It goes down to about 3-6ish framerate...
Any more suggestions? I'm going to try to put the screen resolution more now...
[Edit] Wow. I put it on the highest settings and still, lag. Best AA, Highest Res, Best Quality...

Don't go TOO high with the 7300 GT. My 7600 GT gets under 10 fps at times on the best settings at 1680x1050 res.

Yea, I went from the lowest settings to the highest, I still got the random lag each time I tried...
Now what can I do?
:confused2:

The point is to NOT go on highest.
You said Fraps works right? What framerate do you get?
Also, I don't remember if adding -vsync to the Target line works...try going into NVidia properties and see if you can set Vsync to Always on?

Yea, Fraps works. This is what I get as for the framerate on the main menu.
Detail | AA....... | Framerate
Low.... Disabled.. 30-44
Low.... 2........... 27-35
Low.... 4........... 26-35
Med.... Disabled.. 28-41
Med.... 2........... 23-37
Med.... 4........... 22-35
High.... Disabled.. 27-35
High.... 2........... 25-32
High.... 2........... 24-30
Whenever the lag strikes the framerate goes down to 2-6...
Before when I was still using an integrated video card it was just like how it is when the lag strikes... Do you think my video card I bought and put in is loose or something?
Oh, and its not -vsync, its -novsync... I found it on a page on M$.

Do you have a lot of HD activity when the lag strikes?
Syuusuke
October 31st, 2007, 10:30 PM
Oh lag spikes...
A number of things could be happening, one of them is what Vicky mentioned, HD activity?
Background applications is usually bad, you do have enough memory, but try to rid unneeded apps.

I really don't have anything installed on my Vista though, probably because I don't like it much, so there isn't many programs that could be running while I play...
And I don't have anything running on start up...
Next time I play, I'll look if there is lots of activity...

When you get the random lag attacks, ALT+TAB out of the game and open the Task Manager (Right-Click on the Taskbar and select it) Now hit the "Show processes from all users" button and see if there's a program other than Halo 2 that's using a lot of CPU power. Then attempt to close it
NOTE, if it's Trustedinstaller.exe then you need to shut down the updating service through the Service Control Panel (Start->Run->Services.msc)
Also Read the Sticky PROPERLY and post a PROPER DXDIAG.

I had the same problem too when i first started playing. What fixed my problem was installing vista on a clean partition. Before i just upgraded to vista from xp and it caused many problems. So if you didnt install vista on a clean partition and did upgrade from xp thats probably your problem. Or obviously hardware could be a problem.
p.s. I've found 4gigs of ram is the sweet spot for halo 2. now my fps floats around 50-60 on max settings. No spikes unless the server is slow.

The 7300 GT shouldn't run the game very well at all, but due to the pixel pipelines and memory bus width, it could quite, run the game with a decent amount of FPS.
Few simple theories:
-Update Drivers for all hardware
-The card can well overheat* (I've had too many experiences with this) and the card will either: a. Lag for quite a while or b. Shutdown the system due to a thermal event
-Get some sort of overclocking tool (ATITool, Riva Tuner) and try turning the Fan up to 100% and see if the card experiences any random lag* (Relates to above theory)
There are many problems that can relate to the random lagginess. These are just some simple theories

M'kay, I checked for any processes goin higher than Halo 2.
When I am playing with no lag Halo 2 goes from 40ish CPU, and the only other thing higher than that is System Idle Process.
When there is a lag spike it is sorta the same... System Idle Process is the only thing that is running more than Halo 2.
Lol, sorry, heres a proper one.. hehe.

Acctually I dual boot, Bought my computer with Vista, but then I partition'd and I added XP. I have reformated my Vista once, and that was about a week or so ago...
Oh and here's a screenshot of what happens durring the lag as far as the CPU usage...
http://i2.tinypic.com/4tu0had.jpg
The first time it says lag on the left is when it begins, and the one on the right is when it ends...

Uh can I ask you one thing?
Can you please put your dxdiag in
dxdiag instead of the spoiler tags?
Wow I don't know what you can do...maybe clear pagefile on shutdown?
1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management
3. Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.
4. Right click on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to 1 to enable.
6. Reboot your computer.
It'll take awhile to reboot since it is clearing the pagefile (which is usually a huge file).
Why would you want to do this?
I think having huge pagefiles may effect the Memory Load on your RAM, so lowering the "burden" can relieve the lag spikes? Maybe, maybe not.
Btw, remember to set it back to 0 if you don't want to always go through long shutdowns/restarts.

Oh, yea sure I'll change that.
I'll also try to clear the page file... BTW, I just added something to the other post, I just edited it.

Glancing through this thread, I'm not sure if this is understood. Vista uses DX10 regardless of what video card you have. DX10 is capable of emulating DX9 in real time.
However, a 7300 is a lowend card. It might be relatively strong for a lowend card, but it's still not that great. Assuming by lag you mean framerate drop, check into your background processes. Vista is great at memory management and will often realize it can make better use of memory by caching certain parts to the hard drive and opening it up to the primary applications. Dont get me wrong as it is a decent computer, but since it's not the greatest a bottleneck might occur when the extra data is going from RAM to HDD and that might cause your framerate drop; especially since the GPU is a 7300 and not the best for playing games.

I understand... On the back of my box that I got my card, it says it can handle DX9, not 10. When I first bought it I had this thought in the back of my head, "What if this doesn't work on my Vista because Vista needs DX10?"
I can live with lag, it just gets very annoying. I remember when I got Halo: Combat Evolved on my older computer a long time ago. I had to play with -useff on and go like that till I got a new computer..
Hopefully I eventually find a way to fix this, or I'll just wait till I get another computer.... :embarrassed:

Well your Graphics Cards Drivers are old, so I suggest that you update them and also your Sound Drivers.
They're all prior to the game release so it could be your problem.

I bought my graphics card a week before I installed the game. I used the drivers that were on the CD they gave me...
But, I'll still update them both.
Oh and while I was looking for drivers I found this.
Hotfix for GeForce customers running DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 applications:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105) This hotfix resolves abnormal application behavior such as crashes and extremely low frame rates when running some 3D applications at very high graphics settings. This issue is not limited to, but has been most commonly noticed on high-end graphics cards and the following applications: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Civilization IV, Company of Heroes, Half-Life 2, Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II, Supreme Commander, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas. In order for this hotfix to be effective, GeForce customers must also update to the latest ForceWare Release 163 drivers:
Windows Vista 32-bit (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_163.69.html)
Windows Vista 64-bit (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_163.69.html)
LiNK (http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html) to source. Do you think that has anything to do with what's happening?
[Edit] Well, I installed new graphics and sound drivers and still I get the lag..
Here's a new DxDiag.

have anything forced on in your Graphics Cards Control Panel? Like AA or AF? And when's the last time you've defragged? And you should try those fixes and any other that you could find. Plus maybe the Dual Core Optimizer if you don't have it already.
And what are your ingame setting? I see that you've got a quite crazy resolution on your desktop and I'm hoping that you're not trying to play the game with the same resolution with that graphics card...
And try running a Selective Startup.

And like i asked before, lot of hd activity? Maybe the search index service decides to do some indexing while you're playing. (yeah that's vista)

An amd with 2.2ghz? Amd is todays pentium D. I've just been an avid intel fan, especially since the conroe came out, cant wait for the next gen to come out in a few months. Also your graphics card is probably walking with a cane.
I just think you need to lower all the settings on your computer. Its last years model. It seems like every other month my computer goes out of date. I just update till i cant than start new. I hate it and love it. Anticipation is the best part of anything.
Dont you hate how fast computers go out of date?
3ghz core2. The funny thing its the slowest thing in my comp. I must need a 2- slotted motherboard.
Vicky
November 4th, 2007, 04:31 AM
2.2Ghz is the core frequency, the 4200+ is the 'pentium rating'. So it's equal or better than an intel @ 4.2Ghz.

Nope, I don't have anything forced on the Control Panel.
Um, I defraged last week using AusLogics Disk Defrag.
Uh, No, I don't have the Dual Core Optimizer as far as I know; I'll get that now or maybe someone could point it out to me..
My ingame settings are usually a windowed mode at 800x600 with Anti-Aliasing at 2-sample and level of detail at Low or High (Depends on my mood ;) )
Ehh, what do you mean by selective startup?

Holy crap, are you serious? That's just crazy. =]

Yikes, I just installed the Dual-Core Optimizer for AMD and I'm gonna see if it makes it better...
[Edit] Well, I just played and it seemed to go well, but then this happened; I hit escape for the pause menu real quick and the text there disapeared, so I was like 'wtf'. So then I keep playing and I get a checkpoint (I was on campaign) and right when I get a checkpoint it freezes and so does task manager. Then I just wait and Vista gives me the BSOD. So I restarted and that brings me to where I am now.

So to a core2 processor how does that processor compare? I have a 3.0ghz core2duo and i think its awsome. I'm an intel fan btw.
I know i'm probably not a genius but i think just stating your computer's rating and the component on the lowest sub-score would help. I seriously think your computer should play the game well.
It sounds exactly like the problem i had on my old computer. I think i stated this before but i updated from XP to Vista and when i would play halo i had SERIOUS random lag, and it seemed like it was timed. Every so many seconds or maybe a minute it would lag terribly. I just wiped my HD and installed vista on a clean partition and after that it worked great. I'm sure it could have been fixed but i get frusterated and go overboard at times.

Well johnny what's yours? Then we can compare it. Rough comparison though, maybe use something like 3dMark.
From what i've read the C2D is 1.5-2 times faster than the old P4.
That's a lot of mem for a videocard btw...

For some reason my 3d mark isnt working, i'll try reinstalling.
I know those scores are not awsome but I'm happy with my performance. I still need to finish this comp though, its work in process. Some of these parts are from my old comp and need to be replaced like the video card.
It looks to me like draclan's graphics card is his computer's crutch. But reguardless there is a problem. It should still play well.

Oh, I just did a full clean install of Vista, completly formated the partition and installed Vista from there; maybe that will help.

Processor AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 5.3
So intel isn't half bad now hu? the conroe processors are top of the line now. And intel is coming out with a new model soon.
Nothing against AMD because they make great processors.

Not bad at all, i wonder how they compare in integer and floating point operations. The P4 used to be better with FP than amd.

I almost went for the 2.4ghz quad core duo but i swayed twards the 3.0ghz duo and i dont regret it. I wonder if i made a mistake, they both cost about the same.
