BANGALORE, India - Revered by some in her village as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, a 2-year-old girl born with four arms and four legs was undergoing surgery Tuesday to leave her with a normal body.

The girl named Lakshmi is joined to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in the mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

A team of 30 doctors was removing the extra limbs and organs, surgery that if successful would give her a good chance to live past adolescence. They have already separated the fused spines and the next step will be to remove the extra limbs and the rest of the "parasite," said Dr. Sharan Patil, the orthopedic surgeon leading the operation.

"As of now, the child has been responding very well," Patil said several hours into the operation.
Children born with deformities in deeply traditional rural parts of India, like the remote village in the northern state of Bihar that Lakshmi hails from, are often viewed as reincarnated gods. The young girl is no different — she is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth and her parents say she is revered in her village.

"Everybody considers her a goddess at our village," said her father, Shambhu, who goes by one name. "All this expenditure has happened to make her normal. So far, everything is fine."

Others sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.
The complications for Lakshmi's surgery are myriad: The two spines are merged, she has four kidneys, entangled nerves, two stomach cavities and two chest cavities. She cannot stand up or walk.

"It's a big team effort of a lot of skilled surgeons who will be putting their heart and soul into solving the problem of Lakshmi," Patil said earlier in the day. "It's going to take many, many hours on a continuous basis to operate on the baby. So, these issues definitely make it complex."
Patil put the risk of losing Lakshmi between 20 and 25 percent. Doctors have said the best case scenario after the surgery is that she will walk and function as a normal child.

Doctors at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore, where the girl is undergoing surgery, said she is popular among the staff and patients. The hospital's foundation is paying for the operation because the girl's family could not afford the medical bills.

"She's a very cute girl," Dr. Patil Mamatha said. "She's very playful and gets along well with others."

This is even freakier that the case of that French three-legged man (also the result of a parasitic unborn twin).

But yeah, it's good that the doctors are doing this for free for a poor family. I mean, that girl could die if those extra parts weren't removed.

Saw it on cnn yesterday, so it's a bit old, but an interesting scientific read. Next thing you know, we may have a kid born with 2 heads.

It was replaced by the extra stomach and 2 kidneys she has :ssh:. It's pretty amazing to see that surgeons today are able to remove those extra limbs, the entire twin without a hitch.

Maybe, when they were both in the womb, the girl's vagina tried eating the other baby, but failed. Then they got merged together.

Maybe.

I really find it disgusting when I see pictures of people with extra arms, legs, heads... I don't know why, I guess it's because it's not natural. I also feel sorry for that 8 limbed girl, it must be difficult for her to live that way, but I guess she isn't old enough to realize that she is different. Also, how does somebody with to heads and Siamese Twins work? I mean, who controls what body parts?

I dont think the extra limbs can move. I imagine it as dragging a dead person around. The limbs I wonder of the they get blood circulation because if shes 2 years old they look pretty healthy. I would think they would be all black and shrivled. But if you look closely you can see that they are semi black.

It's called genetic mutation...things can go wrong in all births involving twins. Maybe some cells didn't undergo mitosis, maybe some DNA got screwed up. I've seen a pair of adult twins who were bonded at the sides of their heads so they are permanently staring into each others' faces. They can't be separated since they are sharing a brain.

Fixed.

I don't think it necessarily has to do with mutations, just the wrong situations within the womb.

Well twins are formed when two male sperms instead of one reach the female egg cell. Maybe one of the developing fetuses died and ended up attaching to the surviving fetus in some obscure manner. So yeah, maybe conditions within the womb screwed up one fetus.

Poor girl...did the doctors remove all the extra limbs yet?

not always.

isn't identical twins where there is only 1 sperm and 1 egg. Then when the cell is deviding, it splits in two seperate embryo's (sp?) and forms 2 identical featus's?
isn't simese twins just when the devision of identical twins gets fucked up?

it's to late to go digging, and i'm way to fucking tired, but i thought it was something like that.

n00b1n8R
November 9th, 2007, 07:47 AM
that's how I understood it to work.

and with un-identical twins, it's 2 sperm and 2 eggs at the same time.

il Duce Primo

This happened when the egg was splitting and it didnt finished splitting so I think this is how it happened. I remember having a little discussion about this a few years ago in health class.
