okay, so i've been having this huge fight in my head over whether to go out on a limb with anoher 100 bucks and buy the 8800 GTS 640, or just settle for the 320...rob says he regrets buying his 320, but somebody please talk me into the 640. I want this card to last for a long time, to be able to run crysis, spore--and my own game (KEKEKEKEKEKE) with a decent fps and res. RAM, power, etc, wont be a problem as im basically building this PC around this card if i get a 8800 640.

Get an 8800GT. I have an 8800GTS 640, its awesome, get one if you want. Or wait for whatever else nVidia is releasing whenever they are releasing it. Or that fancy AMD HD38whatever thing or something, I don't know.
Imagine a forest. In that forest is me and I'm talking you into buying whats best for you. Okay? Ok.

Get this 3dfx Voodoo 3, it owns every card out there. It even runs Doom 3 (seriously).
But to be serious with you, I recommend the Geforce 8800 GT over either the GTS or the GTX. The GTX is more powerful, but the GT is not far behind. You can probably run Crysis at at least WXGA resolution on full with the 8800 GT.

Well, how long should one "wait"? It takes about 2-3 years for a video card to lose its status.

well, wait just a few more months. Then get the top of the line card. By then WWIII will be kicking into gear, and not too long after that we'll all be dead. Except the Australians. But they'll be dead soon. Fucking kangaroos.
Anyway, the point being, it will retain its status as the very best graphics card for a while, cause everybody will be too busy fighting off the hordes of radioactive mutant zombies.

What im trying to say is, 'will the 8800GTS 640 retain its ability to play new games for 4 years?'
Hell, i might buy another GPU when its cheaper so i can SLI. that would be crazy. Two 8800s. Okay fuck you guys, im just gonna buy it. Here's my setup so far.

thats like waiting till jesus comes back.
theres always taht something better on the Horizon.
Get bang for your buck.
Never buy the very top cards, because as much as a Penis stroked owning "the top GFX card available ZOMG" it's not worth spending hte extra money for.

Don't get an 8800GTS, get an 8800GT. They cost less and outperform the GTS by a ton.

Wait just a bit more. GameInformer claims that nVidia will be releasing a new 8800, just as good, for like 200 bucks less. This was so that more people could play Crysis, apparently.

No, get the G92 GTS that Alby linked to. You'll see why.

The 256mb 8800GT. It doesn't have enough memory for Crysis, unless you like playing with low textures.

It'd still play it, but you're going to get some nasty stuttering.

Nothing is wrong with the 320 gts, just get that or anything higher and you will run crysis with full settings and 1024x768 res with 2x aa or 4x aa. Thats what I have and it runs great.

Seeing as I can play the game with a radeon x1600 256 mb, I can't see that being true unless you play on Vista and at absurdly high resolutions. Wouldn't the target audience for a card like that be people like me who still play at a meager 1280 x 1024 with all settings on medium?

Get the best you can, because it'll be that less crappy when the newer stuff comes out.
edit: Isn't the quad 6600 better than the dual 6700? If so, get this and a motherboard that can support it instead:

Just get a higher clocked one with more memory and you're set. It's cheaper and it sucks out a lot less power than other cards. That's my 4th main selling feature. Selling features go like this for me:
1. Price(Bang for your buck, or not)
2. Performance
3. Lasting Integrity(How long can it play new games for)
4. Power Consumption(For my PSU I need a card that doesn't take up more than 450W)
5. VIVO(Yes, No)
6. HDMI(Yes, No)
The 8800GT meets all my demands except for the bottom two, DAMN YOU TO HELL nVidia!

I think i'm gonna do that, goat. Maybe if the card lasts long enough i'll SLI it with another. After all, im truly using this as a high end WORKSTATION that doubles as a gaming platform (for testing, of course :hyper: )

Overclocking will not work out for me in the long term. I don't feel like burning out hardware faster than i usually do.

That's why I never added overclocking to my list. I just use my card's preset clock speeds.

ima buy the G96. Although i hate ripping myself away from that extra video memory, i'll have some more money for later.
BTW, made an update on parts: buying a diff processor/mobo

Some game developer apparently doesn't know how to write memory efficient code :v
