View Full Version : So my little brother plays Runescape...

:gonk:
Now I’m no fan of Runescape, honestly I feel it’s a total failure of an MMORPG but I didn’t mind that my little brother played it. Well over the past month or so it has become a real issue, he has developed what almost seems to be a dependency on the game. It’s gross and sad to watch really. The kid is 10 years old and is starting to become a bit overweight, his eating habits have become grotesque, and he had developed one hell of an attitude (Screaming and bitching at my parents when they try to get him off or punish him for back talk. Violent behavior towards siblings when they ask to get on the computer, Ect.).
It’s to the point that all he does is come home from school, take off his pants, and get on the computer until he goes to bed at around 9:30 only to get up when he knows my parents are asleep and gets back on Runescape until 2:00 A.M. My parents are really trying to get him off this “virtual drug” and I want to help to. However I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

Same thing happened to my brother.......still happens once and a while...had to grab the power cord...but, he got around that by stealing it from one of the other 7 computers. It's disturbing to watch boys so young addict to games so....simple.
All I can suggest is get him to become more interested in things like girls, friends, or another video game.....like Halo of Call of Duty or something Hell, maybe get involved with him once and while so he'll find it boring that he keeps losing...or not difficult at all.
Just not that runescape crap...I've been there with my little brother once...It really breaks my heart to see others have the same problem with their sibling.

Get a group of friends together and buy some uncooked kielbasas from the local supermarket (one for each of you) and beat him with them the next time he goes on the computer, whether or not he's being a nasty fat kid. Promptly after the sausage-slapping, rub them in his ear and lock him in a closet with them and tell him that's his dinner for the next week. Get your parents to go along with this. I'm sure theye'll understand.

Yeah your suggestion about getting him into another less addicting game was something I had considered. What I want to do is get him into Guild Wars, it’s a hell of a lot less addicting and a lot more fun. The problem is that he plays on the same exact model of computer as I do though it has never been upgraded like mine has so I know it is incapable of playing such a game. Though I’m sure the next time I upgrade my compute I can stick whatever old parts I pull out of it into the other computer.

Option 1:
Find HOSTS file in:
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\etc
Then you open it with notepad and enter the following line at the end
127.0.0.1 www.runescape.com
Now save it. The site will be blocked.
Using this method, your chances of the person finding the setting is slim.
Option 2:
If your brother pays, cancel his account.
Option 3:
Find the website's IP and block it straight from your router. Anyone using that connection will not be able to access it.
Option 4:
If you use firefox: Get No Script, go into runescape and block the game itself. after that you can uninstall NoScript (keeps the blocked settings blocked If I am not mistaken) or keep it.
Option 5:
Pat's method
Option 6:
Pat's method + disable the account in the settings
Option 7:
Pat's method + change password
Option 8:
Pat's method + you getting on runescape and getting the account banned by doing stupid things, swearing at mods, etc.
Option 9:
Along with blocking the sites, block proxies as well.
Option 10:
Make runescape redirect to goatse. (I know this can be done, I just cant remember)
Option 11:
Emmzee's method
E:Option 12:
get open dns, add to blocked sites list and make it redirect to wherever you want it to redirect to.

Now that is funny because I had tryed that at one point, I tryed everything to get banned and well lets just say it's amazing how fucking fail Jagex's mods are. Then my brother changed his PW >_<'
I like the idea of blocking runscape though. KNowing him he will just get bitchy then give up and go do somthing other then Runescape A.K.A: Watch T.V all day :gonk:

GUILD WARS? Sorry my bro has it. He spent played round 3000 hours in 24 months...my friend hit 4000 hours in 13 months...that's around 3 months out of 20 playing nonstop. I guess that's less addicting.
Also, I hit around 1400 hours in 13 months. :)

When I was addicted to Ultima Online back in '01 or '02, my dad backhanded me in the face every time I bitched about getting off of UO.
That, and they started making me pay for the subscription instead of them.

Don't even bother with your brother. Have a serious talk with your parents about them doing a shitty job. If my parents could ban me from violent video games for 14 years, then your parents can do the same thing. Sure, the kids going to bitch and whine about it, any kid would. But it's bullshit to just keep letting him play just because he gets mad when he gets kicked off. If he doesn't know much about computers then the best thing to do is just put a password on the computer, ban him off of it completely for awhile until he learns some respect. That's what my parents did, and it worked. Well, until I got a job and bought my own computer :P

Yeah, when i was younger i let my nieghboor have my sega dreamcast, for like 50 bucks or something, the kid has been totally addicted to sonic since.
i mean he goes out and BUYS these systems just for one game, its pathetic. His parents telll him to feed the dog, and he says "CANT YOU DO IT YOUR RIGHT THERE OH MY GOD", blah blah blah. I mean im a sonic fan, but not so so so so addicted to it. Every fucking chao in his garden is at level 99. the kid is over wieght, and just learned how to ride a bike at the end of this summer. Hes 13 years old.

Set up a filter (similar to those at public schools) to block Runescape and other web RPGs. I doubt many 10-year olds besides Jason Fox know what a proxy is.
We Chinese employ the policy of using the CANE...I didn't really have video games back then, but the cane was used to force me to do my homework and stop reading comics/watching cartoons. The cane was also used on me at my old school in Singapore when I played Pokemon on the web while I was supposed to work on my Mandarin essay.
I doubt that your parents approve of a cane though, since I assume you're white (not being racist).
You have to cut him off Runescape before it's too late, it happened to my friend once, and resulted in him failing middle school. Hell, being too addicted to games in general, especially MMO's and other multiplayers, is not a good thing.

Seriously? Beat his ass and make him learn how to work. Work out a schedule for him so things are arranged into homework, chores, chores, homework, studying, reading, and then more homework. Then save about 30 minutes for games until he gets into middle school. Then he's gonna have so much homework, cut TV and games off until the weekends, but don't completely deprive him of it. Let him choose one weekly show or maybe one game for about 20 minutes IF he has time. Otherwise, I would bust out the long assed talk, and then beating the shit out of him. That's how I learned to balance. Paintball too. That's fun. He gets teh ass beating, and he has fun!!

well, I'd honestly get your parents to handle it better first..
I'm sort of experienced with this whole pc addiction thing and my dad wanting me to get off, and me being pissed cuz he kicked me off. (this was a while ago lawl).
Get him into real life shit is my best solution... and do this quick before he gets fat... Find something he likes and get him into it. For me it was the adrenaline rush playing FPS games and FPS mmo planetside. I'd play it for close to 4 hours a day at one point. My dad actually made me see a therapist... :XD: I'm not completely crazy though don't worry I have my own personal problems that led me to it...
But yeah get him into doing outdoors shit, I'm lucky because my best friend got me into hiking and climbing, I then got into other stuff, my new addiction is snowboarding, and now I skateboard do other stuff too, paintball is fun. Also my friend got me to join school swim team...
My advice is get him involved with activities, eventually he will realize doing stuff in real life is a lot more fun and satisfying then mashing buttons and watching it all on a screen. :D
Seriously? Beat his ass and make him learn how to work. Work out a schedule for him so things are arranged into homework, chores, chores, homework, studying, reading, and then more homework
Wow I'd hate to be your kid... I'm not saying its bad, but just boring, kids that get locked up like this end up breaking out at later ages cuz there not used to the freedom they will recieve once they turn 18 and get to move away from mommy and daddy, so they make stupid decisions, and again I'm talking from experience cuz I have friends like this... I'm used to the freedom I have and I know my limits and boundaries, my friend on the other hand who is almost 18 is starting to no longer listen to his "nazi parents" hes also doing a lot of stupid shit, I have to stop him sometimes even then he usually doesn't listen to me.
I'm not saying I know everything I'm just saying if that were me I'd go insane living like that and would want to do everything once I got the chance to.

there is no way to get your mind off runescape. the three years i played, it was on my mind all day, at school, at home, whenever. its such a shitty game, but its captivating. even when your bored stiff playing, you'd rather do that then do something else. get him away from the game asap... because the only way you get bored is when you achieve perfection, and that takes years. he may need fuckin rehab.

good point, and let me explain.
PEOPLE CHANGE. many of the assholes you meet in middle school become friendly people in high school. why do they change? two reasons: HUMAN NATURE, and because they see how people react to their attitude. for example, if someone loves pokemon, and finds out that everyone else hates pokemon, they will force themselves to hate pokemon. in other words, there is no reason to say someone is " not worth it " just because they're an asshole when they're 10. they'll mature at some point in their life. now if someone is an asshole at the age of 25, they're probably an asshole by nature, or thats how they were raised, etc, but the kid is 10. 10 year olds always have attitude, and i guarantee you that you did too. ask your parents. (not directed at anyone in particular)
If he had actually had any sort of sense of humor or silliness we wouldn't be in this situation, too.
im plenty humorous and silly, but judging someone based off of a few sentences you read describing them, from a completely biased point of view (the view of his brother) is completely ridiculous.

obviously this kid has a problem, but why is runescape so terrible anyways? I don't like it but I have no reason to hate it (or pretend to hate it to get on some internet bandwagon).

I personally hate it because everyone in my class obsessed over it; there were a group of kids who would take up half a computer lab to play the fucking game on lunch periods. I could never see what was so great about it, besides the fact that it was free. There were a couple other MMOs at that time that I played that were free and much better than Runesuck.

Nothing can beat the boredom of going through space at 2 miles per hour for 6 hours until you finally get where you want to go.

Warp Drive and Warp gates, no one in the game actually goes at a normal speed unless they're approaching a station or an asteroid field.

That's how Neverwinter Nights is now, and it's not even an MMO :\
That game was so cool when the level cap was 20 and basically everyone was already level 20, so it was even. Now every new update increases the level cap to like 10 more ._.

Runescape is such a mess, I don't care if it's in browser or in Java, that's no excuse to how bad it is, the freakin character models only have 200 polygons and character models are usually the most detailed things in games. If the character models are that bad..just imagine the other stuff. Runescape actually isn't that bad when it comes to quests, but all the skills and stuff are far too repetitive.

It does do well. And I think that Jagex did all they could to make Runescape not suck in terms of graphics.
Actually, before all the complete dipfucks invaded it, and before the economy went to hell, Runescape was a very fun game. <_<;

I used to be a Runescape addict, playing alot of halo and other online games (not including MMORGP's, I played FPS and RTS :P) got me out of it, try getting him into halo or some other good game he will enjoy but not complain about being asked to get off.

He's 10.
Ten-year olds are going to complain about that sort of thing no matter what game they're playing.
I was like that when I was ten, and I'm sure most of this forum was at some point in their lives.
