How to I make part of a bitmap transparent?

I'm making an effect for my spartan laser, and I want the outside layer to be transparent, and the inside to be less transparent.

How do I do this?

Alpha channels? Bitmap needs multipurpose?

Thanks in advance!

In the bitmaps make a alpha, on the alpha make the center white and the outter area light grey-dark grey, the closer to black means more transparent.

Where you want the bitmap to be visible, you fill that area, in the alpha channel, with white. Where you want it to be invisible, you fill it black. Anywhere in between will give you a glass looking thing.

Levels of grey are best used for things like lens flares and the like.

So if you are using photoshop you click on "Channels" were your layers are, then you right click on a channel and press new channel or something like that, then call it "alpha"
