EDIT: Most of the problems are fixed, by some miracle. Still remaining are, screen jitters in Battlefield 2, and Messenger's bad habit of quitting when I try to send a message, which didn't happen before the new card.

Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (single core)
2GB DDR in dual channel mode
GeForce 8800GT
ABIT KN8 SLI motherboard (in single card mode)

What is Halo doing? Going all the way up until the splash screen? Do you hear the music and stuff but you can't see the rest? That happens to me on Vista, with my 8800 GTS's current drivers. Since the 8800 GT is relatively new, its drivers probably suck. =p

It goes to the "HALO" loading screen and then quits, WITHOUT a crash message. Same as Messenger. Sometimes even before that.

When you installed it from your previous card, ATI x1300, did you run DriverCleaner and erased the ATI stuff?

ExAm
November 24th, 2007, 11:00 PM
Yes. I opened drivercleaner, selected ATI, and pressed enter.

Or, do I have to run it for all of the ATI-related options? Does the "ATI" option encompass ALL ATI software, or do I have to remove all of the specifically labeled ones? I can't find a trace of ATI on my computer, regardless.

E: Well, I fixed the Halo problem. You see, as it turns out, I had xfire ingame turned on. I also use Yelo Battery. You do the math. The rest of the problems are still there, though.

What's your PSU?

Sounds like either a PSU or Driver issue to me.

edit: ^^.

500w Airnet, but I did the math, and I should be fine. Must be the drivers.

That's the problem with Powersupplies... the number doesn't actually mean anything on shaky brands. Peak voltage can be as high as you want it... its RMS that matters.

In that case, I don't know. I never get any warnings about anything, and I don't know about the power supply causing applications to quit.

...charge of whether non-graphics-related stuff, like my regular applications, works!?

There are no, how you call it "non-graphics-related stuff". All applications use "graphics-related stuff" :)

Normally if your GPU doesn't has enough power, nvidia drivers give a warning message.

Did you run drivercleaner in windows safe mode and did you remove all things from ati? There are several options from ati, I recommend you clean all of them, if you have no ati devices left on your pc.

I didn't do it in safemode, but then I never saw the reason why safemode would make a difference in what files got uninstalled successfully.

EDIT: I just ran through all of the ATI categories in DriverCleaner, then restarted my computer. MSN still "crashes" (More like disappears and doesn't leave any indication of what happened) when I try to start a session.

Try reinstalling msn, are there more apps that act like this?

some files are only removed in safe mode.

you sure you've got the latest driver? I've had problems with shitty nvidia drivers in the past.

But I think your real problem is that you're using an AMD processor. :fail:
lol I really have no idea if it makes any significant difference to pair nvidia with AMD or ati with intel, but it seems to be the case that nvidia goes with intel and amd with ati. =/

Nah, that can't be the problem, I know a lot of people who had and stil have those two mixed, and they seem to have no problems at all.

Yeah I was kinda being serious but mostly not. Methinks it's a driver problem.

some files are only removed in safe mode.I did it again in safemode, and yes it did remove a bunch more files. It still didn't help anything, though.

As for Messenger, I tried uninstalling, and then downloading the latest version, and that still didn't fix the problem.

hmm, strange.
Are there any other programs doing the same thing?

Try cleaning you register with crap cleaner, it's a freeware tool that can clean your hard drive and register from unwanted files and broken registry entries. But make sure if you use it that all external hard drives with programs on them are connected to your computer. (and save a backup from the register changes in case thing do go wrong)

What driver are you using? The new 169.12 beta?

ExAm
November 26th, 2007, 05:51 PM
I'm using the 169.09 drivers. The .12s I found on the eVGA site were Vista only.

This, kids, is why you have to evaluate every part in your system before upgrading.

Another reason why there should be a comprehensive "Do's and Don'ts of PC Upgrades, Building, and usage." It would cause less headaches and problems for those who don't spend their days lurking Anand's diary.

Yeah, the more I learn about computers, the more I find it absolutely miraculous that they work at all. To think that so many unfathomably complex components made by so many different manufacturers can be just stuck together and they can figure out how to communicate with each other automatically, you've gotta expect that at least some times they just won't work together if for no other reason than it's entirely unlikely that the whole damn thing works at all in the first place.

But that's kinda lame if that's the case. I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I think your best bet may be to return the nvidia card if you can and replace it with a comparable ati card, since that's what you had before and it worked before. But I'd try and make the nvidia one work because brand loyalty aside, the nvidia cards are still the best value according to many sources.

But I'd try and make the nvidia one work because brand loyalty aside, the nvidia cards are still the best value according to many sources. No chance. Besides, all that's wrong here is Messenger doesn't work and I've got a bit of screen jitter in one game, which I stop noticing after a while. I'll wait for more driver releases, and if that doesn't work, I'll deal with it. I plan to upgrade everything else soon anyway.

EDIT: Do you think a reformat would help? I could borrow my stepdad's backup drive.

Hopefully I don't come across the same problems as you, but I don't see why I would. We'll know in three days though.

If you do, at least we know it's the drivers. Unless, by some chance, you have the exact same hardware that I do.
