xbox live for 360 not working

i got 12 months of xbox live for the xbox 360 today and when i tried to sign up for it, it said it could'nt connect to xbox live. eveything is plugged in right (im using a router) so i tested the connection and it said that it the IP adress failed or somethin i looked at the report thing and everything on there checks out. i have no idea what the problem is does antone know?

Shut down all the computers on the network, then unplug the router, THEN the modem. Wait about a minute, then plug in the modem again. Wait another minute or so, then plug in the router. Then, power on all the devices on your network. This should fix the IP issue. If it doesn't, try turning on UPnP in your router's settings page, and see what that does.

If that doesn't work, then your router might have an incompatible firmware version. Look on xbox.com, and find the list of acceptable firmware versions for your router brand. If your firmware version (usually listed in one corner of the router page) isn't compatible with Live, download one that is, and try installing it. Other than that, I don't know what you can do.
