Have you been waiting for a legion of half-man, half-machine storm troopers to descend upon your city and blaze a round of hellfire in all general directions? If you said yes, that's kind of weird. At any rate, you can consider yourself one step closer to cyborg annihilation thanks to a company called Sarcos and its semi-scary exoskeleton -- which will make any regular old soldier into a Terminator-like killing machine (as far as we can tell). Sure, they demo the unit lifting heavy equipment and reducing fatigue of the user, but we know what this thing is really for -- and it doesn't involve food drops. Check the video after the break to have your mind shattered into a million delicious pieces.

Thats pretty frickin' sick. I just hope it wouldn't be abused...which it most likely will ~_~

In terms of defense? Yeah, it's not much. But super human strength is definately a plus...

Considering Mjolnirs run off Fusion reactors, they are very far off.

Place your money on Starship Troopers. Unmentioned power source all up ins.

super strength is helpful but not on the battlefield. once they combine that with the dragon skin armor and an HUD then that will be pretty sick. however, there has to be a point where we say enough is enough. like having the suite go off and do it's own thing. machines fighting wars for humans? once you reach this point, all moral value is lost. it just becomes machines slaughtering humans. better armor is all they need. not robots to go in and do small tasks. but it is pretty cool.

Oh, eventually, humans won't fight wars at all. You can bet someone will develop something that runs on its own or can be remotely controlled fighting our wars. Transformers/Star Wars if you will.

When he said slaughtering humans, it could have meant that the robots go and kill innocent civilians. <_<

Also, I think we should stay away from autonomous robots. If some how we ever get them advanced enough to become aware, it could turn into an I, Robot. =p

Their vision is just too limited.

Besides, what good is super-strength in the field? Picking up an enemy and bowling down the others with him might be pretty l33t but other than that and throwing tanks and stuff...

Erg, I dunno, maybe lugging around those hundreds of pounds of supplies that would otherwise leave your immobile? Stop thinking about video games and you might be surprised.

True. You don't just carry a pistol, rifle, eight grenades, and an additional piece of equipment - you also carry food, water, communications, medical/hygienics, personal items, etc. I recommend you read "The Things They Carried" (a short Vietnam memoir/novel) for a good representation of what semi-modern military life is like.

no none of that bullshit. i meant a senseless, emotionless, piece of moving metal, killing what it's told to kill without a second thought. a machine can't hesitate killing because it knows it's wrong. a machine can't not execute a prisoner because it knows it shouldn't. it can be told what to kill and what not to kill, not why and why not.

the strength is helpful to carry around the large amounts of equipment but in combat it won't do much. it'll help in making the military more mobile.

You are of course aware of how rapidly cell phones transitioned from huge blocks carried in bags to smaller than the palm of your hand. Or how within decades music went from vinyl to digital.

why is that so lol? people who know the way the human body moves and its anatomy had to design these suits in order for the actors (or bipeds) to move in a convincing fashion. way more than "it is a cool sketch" goes into design.

And yet most things advance much more quickly than people predict.

Also, there are already hovercraft... they're just impractical for road use and haven't been adopted for that purpose. :eyesroll:

The rule of thumb with technology is simple.

If the military wants it, it gets developed quickly.
If the military doesnt want it, it rots in a hangar.

You do realize those advances progressed so rapidly not because of the ingenuity behind the development of the phones themselves, but because of computer technology in general? This isn't a matter of getting the necessary infrastructure and processing power, it's about getting a power supply that can last long enough in the field. Of course battery tech will grow better, but the rapid progression up to lithium batteries was simply a matter of putting various metals together and seeing which was best. There have been some great advances in capacitors, but I dont believe it's enough. The smart-soldier tech the army is developing now gives them 48 hours worth of battery life across two batteries. Those were large enough as it is and powering low-wattage equipment.

Now I'm not saying it's far from being accomplished, I'm just saying it'll be a while before it's successful enough to be adopted into the military. Do remember price is indeed a factor.

it would have its merits tough. no post traumatic stress syndrome troubles, they´d ONLY stick to their orders -> no raping or other questionable acts against civilians, they could even stick to the geneva convention-imagine that. also, they could make good use of non lethal methods to take out their opponents. in any case i like the [quote from gta:vc: Make war on machines -concep altough it would probably leave some grunts jobless]

Human losses on each side are what make wars end. Robot losses=keeps on going.....

But I still demand a Silencer-esque suit of armor.

Cortexian
December 5th, 2007, 01:51 AM
If they armor this suit, and create a decent portable power supply (no cables), it would be field ready for short operations...

None of these things really work out until we invent a powerful enough generator to power them for extended periods. The person that invents a portable power generator like this, is going to speed up technological advantages overnight. Just think about it for a minute, almost everything is limited by power available atm...

We don't really fight now. Technology is used. Sure soldiers are still used, but if a country was to go into a full-blown war, or something like world war 3 happen, nuclear weapons would be used. 1 missile = 1 million people. The world would be destroyed in a blink of an eye.

So cool, I could see many uses for these suits.

I am waitign for a us to come out with nanosuits made from carbon nano tubes that only has to be 2 mm thick to stop a high caliber round. Now we just need to find a way to make carbon nano tubes not radioactive. They should wait till new materials come out there that contract when an electric current is run through it.

If the military wants this made, it will be made. They wanted ground based lasers that could shot artillery shells and missles out of the air, they have them now. They are still trying to decrease the size and energy needs of it though.
I forgot what the material in dragon skin is, is it cyramic plates of carbon fiber?

Carbon compounds ftw

ima_from_America
December 9th, 2007, 04:15 PM
It's ceramic plates.

But an armored 'muscle' so to speak, would be expensive. But it would still be awesome.

And the military has a rifle that shoots bolts of electricity. Which is awesome. http://www.xtremeads.com/stunstrike.htm
