So I decided to get back into the swing of modelling. What better way to star than to do something easy, like a chess set. I realized that this could also be a level for Halo CE and figured I'd post it up here. This is {XF}Fodder (Havoc) from the old Gearbox forums.
I realize its not done, but its what I could accomplish in an hour.
Knight - WIP
Queen + King, coming soon.

I thought the spotlight was rather fun, just playing around with lighting and effects =)
Lemme know what you think, first shot at modelling in a year? o.0;;

Not bad by my opinion. I really like the game pieces. I would see a lack of fun in gameplay with this design though. Take it a step father. Add more interesting places to hide, maybe other under-chessboard rooms.

Looks pretty much like a cheap chess set. The knights could use work though. Good stuff. I'm sure if you were to put it on turbosquid or some other site that some sucker would buy it. But I don't think it'll make a good Halo map. Just saying.

lathe is pretty easy to use isn't it. nothing special here. try harder. maybe if you were to make the pieces halo themed you'd have something but this is just.... boring.

Why yes, yes it is =) That's why I chose to do such an easy project to get back into modeling.

So are the chess peices going to be drivable or something?

Yeah, but still he acheived what he was going for which is what really matters. It looks cool, but yes the horse could use a little work. If you wanted to get a little more complicated and to make it into a map, you could try breaking them up into peices and debris. Or, just an idea that popped into my head. You could make 2 differant castles, each about the same size as the chess board in square units. The board could be sort of like a little courtyard thing with broken debris, and have maybe some sort of castle like defenses around the outside that also connect the 2 castles. How's that for some constructive critism, lol.
Edit: Actually, fuck it now I really like this idea and I'm gonna do it in my spare time lol. How would you feel about working together to make a map? We could each design a castle or something :)

I am not sure that you saw this but someone is already doing a Checker's board layout for Halo CE. If you haven't check this out. http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm?page=topic&topicID=13775
Personally I really don't like the idea. Both Chess and Checker's. I see no point for people playing it.

Hooray for using tutorials instead of just modeling random shit without learning what you're doing! I'd recognize that tut anywhere. +respect for taking the time rather than going off and doing your own thing without any clue how to do it. That said, don't forget that even if you're Snaf you've still got things to learn. My recommendation: keep doing what you're doing (that is, learning the trade using tuts), and don't get ahead of yourself by deciding to make this into a map, and definitely don't get ahead of yourself by trying to make your first map the best map ever.

Ok so I got all excited and went and made a quick 5 minute draft to show my concept a little (lol sorry to steal your thread I'll make my own if you want). Obviously the castles wouldnt look anything like this, I just made it out of primitives to show that its a castle haha. Anyways yeah, want to make a map? lol

Smexy : ) Would love to work with ya Leiukemia. I mean, again that is, lol, even though nothing really ever happened with Invert Game Studios... =\
@ Rob
Not my first map or model ever =)
The best model/level I ever released was Crunch 2 Public Beta which I'm considering re-visiting at some point.

definatly has potential imho. it would even make a kickass teamplay map if you would have to fight for every move you intend to make. just make sure the figures arnt affected by nades and melle.

Update on the Knight, he looks like he has downs, but this is the best I've ever done using a spline cage. (remodeled him 3 times so far 'cause i haven't liked the way he's turned out :embarrassed:) he needs a mouth too =\

While I'm no guru like Tweek or SnaF, I like what I see.
Just make sure that, assuming that the chess pieces will be scenery objects and not part of the actual level mesh, that you make level of detail models for them.

Hmm, they were originally going to be part of the BSP...but seeing as without the rest of the level (just pieces), there's over 200k tri's...Hehehehe i need to do some drastic reduction of poly-count.
Low center? psh, high! we want these things falling over on poor unsuspecting suckers.
j/k - We'll see what Leiukemia says. After all, he'll be a part of the map too =)

ThereOnceWasAGirl
December 6th, 2007, 06:44 AM
Haha it was never my intention for you to be able to actually "PLAY" chess persay; more like fight on a level where chief is about 1/5 or 1/6 the size of the Queen which would make it seem like chief got shrunk down and planted smack in the middle of a chess game.
Probably will end up "destroying" chess pieces, make it look beat up and shit, have chunks scattered around etc. But we'll see, I'm taking it slow with this one.
EDIT:
Update WIP Chessboard (Centerpiece btwn both castles? o.0). Was playing around with Tweek's method for creating "destroyed/weathered" objects. More to come.

Meh, it's a busted chess board. As for the rest of it, far too simple and uncreative. You've got some little extrusions around the edge of the board. Try to do something a bit more creative. If I were you, I'd model this board as the courtyard of a small castle instead of between two castles. This way, it's more of a direct route through the chess board, so there's no terrain or anything around it. It also lets you put up big walls to the sides that you can make pretty with damage from catapults or something neat like that.
