Welcome to the forums!

To answer your questions, yes it is possible to make items in Halo CE.

Main differences:
-Halo 1
-Fucked up netcode
-More people
-More custom maps
-More options (for now)
-Box maps as far as the eyes can see

Things you can make in Halo CE:
-Maps
-Weapons
-Scenery
-Bipeds
-UI
-Scripts to make something you want possible
-Campaign maps
-Sounds
-More stuff
-Errors

Main difference with Halo 2 Vista
-Halo 2 (obvious)
-Limited editor

Things you can do in H2V Editor:
-Maps
-.... Thats about it...

As we stand, CE/H1 has a massive amount of potential compared to H2V. As OmegaDragon said, H2V is strictly limited to custom maps. No custom weapons, vehicles, scenery, bipeds, effects, or anything of that nature. Ce has all that and more. And yes, custom items are fairly easy to make once you've firmly grasped the HEK.

Are you sure he didn't mean Halo being played on Vista?

1) Go to http://hce.halomaps.org/ and search HEK or Halo Editing Kit.
1.2)Get it
2) Go read a HEK Tutorial. http://hce.halomaps.org/hek/ or http://ghost.halomaps.org/
3) Get 3dsmax 8 Demo
4) Get BlueStreak http://ghost.halomaps.org/bluestreak/jms/
5) ???
6) Profit!

You downloaded it, keep in mind you would need both the CD and serial code for Halo PC if you want to install it.

halo 1 pc or halo 2 pc

Halo 1, as Halo 2 only allows custom maps, not weapons; and that exporter makes .JMS files, which I doubt H2v uses. :Not wasting money on figuring out:

Buy it if you like it and think you can dedicate yourself enough to improve and make good quality content. The commercial version can be thousands of dollars but if you're a student there are a lot cheaper academic versions available.

Once it runs out, you will probably have to get gmax, but since I know nothing of how exporting works out, I can't tell you much.

Gmax just requires maxscript exporters like Bluestreak (for models) and HAX (for animations) instead of blitz. Otherwise you can pretty much treat it the same.

so all gmax requries is MAXScript?

Gmax:

Exporting Animations:

Exporting Models: (Click the one called "JMS Exporter"):

The mapping tutorial that got me started:

This one is optional, but if you want to post stuff you made here, you have to get good at plane modeling:
http://www.moddb.com/tutorials/23868/beretta-9000-video-tutorialIf you think that the tutorial is too long or too boring, you can box model and show your work at http://forum.halomaps.org. That place is full of box modelers. Don't be afraid if your first map doesn't look good, it takes practice. If you want to post your work here, however, please please please PLEASE learn to plane model.
Here is about 3 months worth of plane modeling experience:

Get good at modeling, and we hope to see you here later! :D

I don't mean to be a jerk, but this user has asked quite a few questions that were, to say the least, painfully obvious and mildly irritating. It doesn't take a university degree to figure out that Halo one, not Halo two, is needed for Halo CE to run. Most download sites hosting the CE installer have a brief description that explicitly says you need a Halo 1 disc and the CD key. As for the 3ds max trial, of course you either buy the software or switch to something else once the 30 days run out! Jeez. Worst of all, he asked where he could download CE in the first place...use Google! It's as stupid a question as asking where to download Mozilla Firefox.

Next thing I know, he's going to ask how to save his model as a file.

I am amazed that you guys replied to his questions nicely though. I'm touched by such...kindness.

Anyway, welcome to the forums, brush up your typing skills, and good luck with your modelling. There is a "post your WIPs" thread here already if you want to show off your work - just make sure you do more than a blocky gray cube. Texturing is the hardest part of the model, of course - I gave up on trying to use 3ds Max long ago (I know how to operate the tools, but I am incapable of producing anything worth posting on a forum, and I lack the patience and commitment to carefully render a model).

And please be nice. You're going to have smarmy members criticize your work, but accept the criticism, try to correct what they point out as flaws, and you're good to go.

If I were you, I'd work on simpler things before you start creating new weapons. As Buckshot said, judging by the kind of questions your asking, it looks like you'd have a really tough time trying to do that. Make some maps and get a feel for Max and the HEK programs, and halo's tag system.

Very true Conscars, from the questions he's asked, it looks like he'll have a major challenge doing any sort of 3D modelling. God forbid he end up like one of those red-reputation "modders" (TLSHunter, Terror No More, etc...) At the rate he goes, he makes Strider Vega Core look like the king of all CE modders.

...not really. I remember asking similarly dumb questions about 3DS/Halo CE back when I first started way back in 2005. I always thought that making a mod was as simple as throwing some AIs into a poorly modeled level and honestly only learned how complex everything was when I began to follow CMT roughly around the beginning of 2007. Anyway, I never got as kind or patient of a reply as some of the guys up there gave out (that was really cool btw :D +rep) but everyone has to start out somewhere. mmKillermm, you picked a good place to begin.

Anyway, my suggestion to you is to look at that tutorial Jay posted asap. Don't bother with Halomaps, going there will probably do more harm then good. This (http://www.moddb.com/tutorials/24143/creating-a-weapon-for-source) right here is another good tutorial from the same site, in fact I kind of like this one a little bit better because it also goes over animations and texturing, both of which are very important parts of pretty much anything advanced you do in Halo CE.

I'm going to say this right here and now though. Making this stuff can be pretty tough due to the complexity involved: Bungie's level designers were paid to make video game levels for a reason. Stick with it and you probably will get it eventually. Hell, one day someone may even actually play one of your maps and be impressed. However, one thing that will really piss people off here (and anywhere else for that matter) is stealing someone else's work and claiming it as your own, so this is your first and hopefully only warning about that. That includes ripping things from other games or stealing people's personal work -- if you say it is your work it better damn well be your work.

Other then that, best of luck and have fun!
