View Full Version : ANSII in Halo CE dedicated server name?

Ok I was wondering is there any way to get ASCII characters in the dedicated server name. I tried putting them in the init.txt but I received an error in the command prompt that said "Server names must only contain printable ASCII characters supported by the Halo UI."

I am coming to you guys because I am sure you can help me out here.

Thanks in advance.

PS: My goal is to use any of the command codes (ex. alt + 0129, 0144, 0143, 0157) to bump my server to the top of the list.

As far as I know, not without hacking the server memory directly.

Well there are many servers on Halo PC that use those command codes to get their servers at the top of the list. In xfire it looks like this [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]1BÇ (except the boxes are connected.) but in the game lobby all you see is 1BÇ. So do you think they are hacking the UI.

Hmm, maybe its possible via memory hacking. I might give it a try, but doubt I can get a server running on this connection

Well I can get a server running and everything. If only I knew how to memory hack. Can someone tell me how or is it to advanced for someone who doesn't know how??

Yeah its pretty hard, not really that easy to pick up.

I didn't find it that hard, with a program like cheat engine and a couple tuts you should be fine.

supersniper
January 16th, 2008, 08:20 PM
Well I would really appreciate it if someone could provide those tuts.

Yeah, Memory hacking SHOULD do the trick.

I've been wondering how BC did that as well... I'll take a look tomorrow.

Any ASCII name in Init...no need for external crap. Please give credit in server where possible. Enjoy. http://files.filefront.com/HaloDED+Fixedrar/;9511461;/fileinfo.html It is me.

I hate to be a bugger but which ASCII character to I put in front of the server name. I have tried many but none of them go to the top like BC's servers do. I have also tried the command ones like alt+0129, 0141, 0143, 0144.

Is it just me, or is a bit cheap to throw your server on top of the list? I don't know about you guys, but when I sort servers, its not alphabetical, it's by map or maxplayers. In all honesty, why would I care about the name?

Yeah thats how I sort them too. I suppose to get noobs to join your server?

This is mostly for Halo PC for the FUN clan servers. We are tired of being under BBT servers so we wanted to boost it up. That is why I am asking the question. So please if anyone know what to put in front of the server name to boost it up please tell me.

My modified exe is only intended for HaloCE Dedicated Servers.

January 28th, 2008, 01:17 PM
Ohdamn, Halo CE only? Why not the other version.

Wanna modify my exe to run dev commands?

CrAsHOvErRide
January 28th, 2008, 01:33 PM
I can do any version. >.>

Dev commands? Are they already installed but only disabled?

e.g. haloceded.exe -devmode?

supersniper
January 28th, 2008, 03:11 PM
Can you make it for PC. I would really appreciate it. And I think dev commands don't work but I never tried.
I tried doing the PC one myself but I kinda confused myself and messed everything up.

It's a simple one byte patch...the ReadMe tells you almost everything.

By default dev commands dont work on dedicated servers. Is it really that easy to allow dev commands in dedicated servers pat? Hmmm

Pat I tried. But I am not good with hex editing and memory editing. But I will try again.

You need neither.

I'll install HaloPC and do it myself.

Hey Pat, can you PM me on how to actually "do" this. I don't want a pre-patch file, I like doing stuff myself.

CrAsHOvErRide
February 5th, 2008, 03:54 PM
I can tell you how to do it with a HexEditor but not how I did it really.

Open up the HexEditor. The jump to be NOPd is at VA 00517C7B...00517C73-00400000=117C7B so go there with a HexEditor...it should be
74 4B...we need to patch those 2 bytes...make them 90 90...that equals as "No Operation" for a computer.

Voila.

You can bypass all ASCII checks (length, never tried it though) by patching all this crap in parenthesis.

00517C03 (90 90 90 90 90 90) 8B 84 24 90 00 00 00 8B 30 8B ‹„$...‹0‹

EDIT: Actually, forget the bottom code. I forgot a jump and I don't feel like updating since it's senseless. :eyesroll:

February 11th, 2008, 04:47 PM
Well I used your dedicated server. But I don't know what do put for the server name to get it to the top like BC clan does. It is a special ASCII that forms this [] but closed. I saw it in front of their name on xfire but in Halo it doesn't show. So, yes it lets you bypass all ASCII but I still have not found that mysterious character yet.

p0lar_bear
February 11th, 2008, 10:54 PM
The [] is simply a character that the current font doesn't have a glyph for.

supersniper
February 12th, 2008, 05:52 PM
Well I can't find it. If you could tell me which character it is then I will greatly appreciate it.

The [ ] keys are above the semicolon/colon and apostrophe/quote keys and below the - = Backspace keys.

Ouch. []...it looks like that but those are not the actual chars.

Make the ASCII byte FF or 00...that should do the trick.

Also me and someone else are making a updated version of the dedicated server just for fun. It's going to include some things that may push it to the legal limit but I guess it's for the greater good.

supersniper

What I mean is that the character looks like [] but really it looks like

Gah the closed box does not show on the internet. Ugh this so confusing to say. The [] is supposed to be a closed box.

By the way this is the character I am trying to get the Halo dedicated server accept. Because on xfire it is this one that makes the BC servers go to the very top when you sort it by server name.

Open the init.txt in a hexeditor and make the first character of the name FF...try that.
