View Full Version : A good game to start modding?

Ok, I've been looking around for a while, but I'm undecided. I'm done with Halo CE modding due to it's archaicness and odd work flow (for me). I don't want to get into something too over my head, which is why I'm unsure about something like UT3, but I also despise Hammer for the Source engine, so.. yeah. Basically, I want a game where I can pretty much put whatever geometry I want in, make some custom weapons and screw around. Much thanks to anyone with ideas.

Honestly, it's UT3, Halo, or Source, and that's about it. CryEngine is too advanced to get mods out to a lot of people.

I believe Tiberian Sun is a very good game to mod. It has a very active mod community.

Or I could 1up you and recommend C&C Generals: Zero Hour. The expansion pack itself started off as a mod, and now has a multitude of great user-created mods in current use and continuing development. Shockwave (http://www.h2vista.net/forums/www.shockwavemod.com) is my current favorite. You sound like you're ooking for an fps, judging by your dissatisfaction with HEK, Hammer and UnrealEdit, and I cannot help you in that department. Hope you find something you like, though!

Ok, thanks for the input. I guess it doesn't hurt to try Ut3, if it's too much I can just stop I suppose.

UT3 or Source. Source would probably be a better idea since it has a much much much larger audience then UT3 does at the moment.

Yeah, source has a much bigger mod community than ut3. Custom content gets used a hell of allot more as well. You rarely see custom maps played in UT3, while in source games, nearly half of the 1000s of servers are running custom maps with custom content.

Consider the Doom 3 Engine

Well, I started out modding for the RTS Star Wars: Empire at War.
http://empireatwar.filefront.com
Now that the developer (Petroglyph) has left EAW for Universe at War: Earth Assault, the community left, but that's a good game to learn XML files, which help out when you are coding actual programs. I prefer XML over any other language because of that game, and it has a built-in map editor, like H2V, but unlocked.
After that, I went into the Doom 3 (Or is is UT2? I forgot) engine with Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
http://jediknight.filefront.com
That's also a good game to mod, because it uses PK3 files, nice and easy to make.
After that, I started modding Halo, which, I must admit, is the hardest game I have met so far to mod.
I'm learning Source (I may make my Turf a TF2 map, that game's more fun then HL2, and seeing that map with the cell shaders will be epic lulz), but since I haven't made anything yet, I can't comment on how easy it is for that.

Thanks for the very detailed response! I haven't done much on steam in a while, but turns out, I come back to it and nothing is working (damn hl2.exe has stopped working error.)

Reinstall maybe?
Also, go here (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page) to learn stuff about modding Source based games. In fact, set it as your homepage.

Halo is not hard to use, I found source far more difficult to use because hammer felt limiting while halo's tag system is both easy and powerful.

Have fun. I already made a zoom script similar to that of Halo PC's sniper rifle, but I lost it in a reformat and I've since forgot the scripting code for the game. :(
It might be on http://quadropolis.us/ under scripts by the author Muki Hyena, of course. I forgot if I uploaded it or not.
