Edit --- DS = DEDICATED SERVER
Well i've been having touble on and off with running my dedicated server. Mostly OS related. I tried it on windows server 2003 and 2008. I got the server running on both OS's but i want the server tool to run too and it wasn't working right for me.
So i reformatted my HD and reinstalled server 2003. I finally got the OS in pristine condition. Installed the DS service, live autosignon and key. Now i get a message in the CMD prompt when trying to run the server. Its right under STATUS maximum number of servers on this key.
Server will not start. I think i forgot to uninstall the DS services when i reformatted my HD. What do i do now? M$ was no help with it.
I was thinking i might be able to install the DS service. Create a restore point. Uninstall the service. Than restore to the restore point and uninstall again.

Instead of DS, put dedicated server, if thats what you mean.
I opened this topic with the mistaken reason, hoping they had made some use of an awesome portable system.

Well not me, it's located in Halo 2 Vista Technical & Server Administration (http://www.h2vista.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=28) not H2V Announcements or news or whatever...
So did it work Johnny?

Did not work, I have a couple ideas but not yet. And why would someone think DS stands for nintendo DS on a halo 2 VISTA website? Oh well any help would be appreciated. Microsoft keeps sending me to other sources. Bungie pretty much says i need to contact microsoft games. I just want to know who accepts the product key when activating the dedicated server service. Or who keeps track of how many instances of the DS service is installed. I first thought it was microsoft games because the key is produced by M$. Or Xbox live because it is running a Live server, they said no too. Hired gun "who did the work building the DS" Would be one of my only guesses left. Maybe theres a command that is not listed.

Hey blaze, please describe what specific problem you are having.. I can not determine from the above statements what you do have installed, and/or working.
Forget talking about a 'service', as you can run a dedi server as a normal program or as a 'service'. I would suggest first getting a dedi server working without making it a service.
Let us know where you are and we'll try to help.

It runs just fine as a console. I've written to support at M$ games, bungie, and xbox live. They are all oblivious to the solution. It just seems like Xbox Live (or who ever the DS sends authentication to) thinks i have numerous dedicated server services running and they know this by the key i used. I only have 1 installed.

From a command prompt type NET STOP H2SERVER substituting whatever you called the service. If you used the default, the above statement should do it.

Sounds to me like your registry thinks the service is installed and there is no physical installation files. Or you do have it installed and it will not start. probably not.
I'd try to look for a system restore point before before you uninstalled the service. Or delete the h2server user account. Thats in the local user and groups tab in computer management. Also try deleting the h2server user directory after you do that.
Before you do that though did you actually check in "services" to see if your h2server has a service installed or running?
I've had about every problem with the DS that i've ever herd about and a few i have not. But this is a new one to me.
What OS are you running? And be careful about how many times you install the server service because you can only install it so many times before you have to buy another copy of say bye-bye to the server.

I think that really sucks, If they want H2V to take off more they need to take off those stupid limits. Also you can buy a copy of Gears of War and use that CD key for the server.

So you can use GoW cd key for a H2vista server??

It isant a CD key for Halo 2, or Gears of War itself. its a LIVE CD Key. Thats what confused me before looking at my cd key and seeing "Games for Windows Live CD Key". Gears installed without a key but then wouldent connect to live without the key.
