View Full Version : Getting a new Electric Gee-tar

I've been playing the guitar for 4 years now, had a loyal Washburn guitar I got for Christmas.
Then I started Riotmaker (A.K.A. Assault on the Control Room, the name I prefer, but whatever).
That loyal guitar is now lying in about 50 separate pieces (It was in the heat of the moment, OK?), and I need a new one. I have $250 to work with.
Now I need H2V's advice on what guitar I should get. I know some of you are avid guitar players, so I figured you could help.
My first option was the ESP EF-50 (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=6&TempID=7&DepartmentID=1&STRID=19719&CategorySubID=681&CategoryID=681&BrandID=0&CategorySubPriceRangeID=5&pagesize=10&SortMethod=3&Method=3&PriceRangeID=0&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=Department&GroupCode=&categorysubsearch=true).
http://www.samash.com/images/items/lg_EF50.jpg
I had the liberty of trying this one out in the store. Looks nice, sounds nice. This is my number one choice right now.
I also liked the AX50 (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=7&TempID=8&DepartmentID=1&STRID=19719&CategorySubID=681&CategoryID=681&BrandID=0&CategorySubPriceRangeID=5&pagesize=10&SortMethod=3&Method=3&PriceRangeID=0&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=Department&GroupCode=&categorysubsearch=true), also by ESP.

I'd probably get it in black, but I haven't tried this one out in person, so while I have a general feel for how it looks, I don't know if I like it yet, and it has mixed reviews. I'm going for looks and tone.
Another choice is the Viper 100 (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=11&TempID=2&DepartmentID=1&STRID=191320&CategorySubID=681&CategoryID=681&BrandID=0&CategorySubPriceRangeID=5&pagesize=10&SortMethod=2&Method=3&PriceRangeID=0&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=Department&GroupCode=&categorysubsearch=true).
http://www.samash.com/images/items/lg_EV100FMBK.jpg
I'd be cutting it close price-wise, if you count tax, but it sounds great. I'm not too fond of the way it looks, upon closer inspection at the store.
If you guys have any suggestions or ideas, tell me.

Whichever sounds the best, but if they all have equal sound quality, get the AX50. It looks wicked.

I have no idea, but the Viper-100 looks best imo. It doesn't have the whole "punk rock screamo" look to it, and looks a bit more classy.
But whatever sounds the best.

You know, guitars like the AK50 are metal. I have never seen a screamo band with those types of guitars.

You should just get like an Agile Les Paul or something, I hear they're very good for replicating Les Paul tone at a low price.

Although if you don't want that I'd take the first choice.

ESP/ Ltd's are pretty good :)
it's a toss up between Ibanez and ESP for supreme metal guitars.
but to buy a legit esp (NOT an LTD)you gotta......... sell your car.

By my personal style, I'd go for the Viper, but I really don't know what you like.
IMO, try looking at used guitars. It's amazing how a couple dents in a guitar can make it worth way less and yet it sounds just as good as it would new.
Check out your local small guitar store and see what they have for used guitars. My Dad went into our Musician's Trading Post two weeks ago and picked up a Renegade Les Paul copy for $140. He played it alongside a friend who has an Epiphone Les Paul with Gibson Burstbuckers in it, and truthfully, I couldn't hear the difference.
[slightly off-topic] Actually, it annoys me greatly 'cause I play left-hand and I have yet to find a good used lefty. I'm sure 1 in 50 used guitars is a lefty... :(
But good used righties are a lot easier to find!

Wow, how can you not tell the difference. Even when I switched my 490's out for burstbuckers, there was a HUGE difference, most notably when I play clean.

I'm an Ibanez person myself
My first guitar is an Acoustic by Ibanez(Still don't know how to pronounce that, i-ben-ezz?) I don't really even know how to play it so I'm starting lessons next month. I'd much rather learn to play the electric guitar but people in my house think it makes too much noise.
Anyways, I think the Viper 100 looks the most professional but whichever one sounds the best and has the most clarity would be the best choice.

Yeah, thats how you pronounce it afaik.
I don't kno wat ur peeps b thinkin' y0. With an electric, you can at least plug in headphones into your amp\other but with an acoustic you just...make noise and stuffs :v

Acoustic is supposedly better for beginners because you can hear your mistakes easier, I personally can't. Most of the amps I use have headphone jacks, I guess they think you wouldn't wear headphones while playing.

Acoustic is definitely not better, in m opinion. You arent exposed to the wide variety of sounds you can create with an electric, and you can plug headphones into an amp (or if you have one of those usb guitars, the guitar itself) for privacy. Its also nice when you're teaching yourself like me, i take breaks from scales and chords and fiddle around with pick sliding, finger tapping, etc etc. I tried, its not the same on acoustic.
oh yea you should get a steinberger (http://zurlocker.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/steinberger_white_1.jpg) ;o

Come to think of it, it never occurred to me either:embarrassed:
Xetsuei™;230678']?
You know it was just a simple spelling and grammatical error.
I just find that the strings on the 6-String acoustic really hurt my fingers but I guess they're getting used to it. It's just so damned hard to play all those chords without a finger accidentally touching a string that shouldn't be touched.
I also find that playing clean is my favourite sound coming from an electric guitar. I just love the way Johnny Buckland plays it in the song X&Y. You can listen to it if you want but you have to wait for teh chorus since that's where it's heard most.

Neat, one of my friends bought a Schecter Synyster a few months ago. I must say it is very awesome, especially the floyd rose bridge.
