View Full Version : Communist Contest: Sickle and Hammer
Bad Waffle

So i really dont have enough time to do EVERYTHING in this mod, so i need some people to contribute. I'm setting this up like a contest. Here's the formalities. This thread will be posted throughout the halo modding forums, excluding halomaps and halomods, because, even though the people who run both those sites are groundbreaking halo legends, the people who make up the large majority of said boards are within the age of 9 to 14. If somebody proves me wrong, they can post this there too.
CONTEST--
Model and skin a group of 'detail objects'. These objects are in the category of hammers, used milk canisters, cans, old newspapers, tape rolls, old cups, broken electronics, broken hardware, tires, etc etc--anything small that you would find laying around in a deserted city.
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE:
http://xs125.xs.to/xs125/08125/hurr393.jpg
These objects will be used in the city based map, Rebirth Circollosi, a remake of New Mombassa Classic. More info here (http://www.h2vista.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8382).
The top 7 groups of objects will be included in the map.
PRIZES--
1st place--included in gameplay tests spanning all maps up to release
2nd place--included in gameplay tests spanning all maps up to release
3rd place--included in Rebirth-Circollosi test up to release
4th place--included in Rebirth-Circollosi test up to release
5th place--included in Rebirth-Circollosi test up to release
6th place--included in Rebirth-Circollosi test up to release
7th place--included in Rebirth-Circollosi test up to release
Monetary prizes coming later.
RULES--
objects must be MAXIMUM 300 TRIS, NO EXCEPTIONS
objects must be skinned with nothing greater than a 256x256 map. 128^2 preferred. Only diffuse, no specular or bump.
You MUST have at least 4 objects in your pack, maximum of 8 objects.
You can enter as many item packs as you want.
The privelege of enjoying tests with us can be revoked at any time, if for any time you are suspected or proven to be less than trustworthy. You will lose this privelege twice as fast if you gloat to people that you have the privelege. I really dont have to explain common sense, but people worry me sometimes.
You have until May 1st to complete your work.SIZE GUIDE:

I might do this. Can't really skin though. :/

you guys have until may first to learn how to skin a few simple 128^2 objects. If you ask me, this is a great opportunity to learn.

When I have some free time I'll make some stuff. You don't want them in tag format, right? Just model file, plus skin.

Rawr: I made a lower poly version of the bottle, it has an inside and is currently at like 204 polies as opposed to 290ish.

You can cut it down MUCH more!
I have a few objects in a scene I'm making that totals up to 350 triangles (5 objects).
Small objects don't need much detail in sides or edges. Just simple ones and a nice detailed texture at 128 or 256 (even 64 if it's that small or basic).

My understanding is that WoL has budgeted his areas so that each object can have up to 300 polygons, not the entire package of objects. I can optimize them more if WoL specifies for that. I can also do some LoDs if he wants.
Although it probably would be better if I toned down the polies on the broken bottle, as the two pieces together are like 450 polies >___>

You'd save by replacing the tab and surrounding area with a texture, instead of adding detail like that.

it's nice we can make pretty detailed things but low triangle objects i believe were requested. bottles can easily 5 sides.

March 19th, 2008, 08:55 PM
Yes I understand that each object can be 300, but if you cut it down so that multiple objects can equal 300 together, you can multiply how many objects can be in one scene at the same time.

...you know he wants TRIANGLES not polies right. seeing as how games triangulate models so that matters more then polies. also sunny is right, these aren't things that will be close to the players screen nor stared at for a long time, so what sunny is doing works out better. Also keep in mind, 2 sided materials are extremely helpful with reducing polies. things like broken bottles and boxes can take advantage of this.
Here, use this for example. This scene totals at 180 tris, probably could be lower cause the caps may be unnecessary. bottles are 5 sided cylinders and use of 2 sided material makes up the interior of the box and broken bottle.

OK, I have a couple questions:
1. Is it 300 trits per object, or the set altogether? I'm assuming the set, but I could be wrong.
2. If we have a set that's just BARELY over (304 trits), is it still acceptable?
EDIT: I no longer need the answers to those 2 questions (I did some MAJOR cutting down on triangles in an attempt to lower the poly count), but someone else might.
Anyway, my very low-poly scene (I had to cut out all the little details I liked putting on there...)
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa115/Jay2645/render1-2.jpg
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa115/Jay2645/render1-wireframe.jpg
Ignore that top line in the wireframe, that's my floor.
Triangle Breakdown:
62 trits for the wood
46 each for the nails (Any lower didn't look right)
144 for the tire (With an actual interior, rather than having the rims still attached)
TOTAL TRIANGLE COUNT:
298
Next step would be skinning.
Also, hi HBO! (http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=22271)
NuggetWarmer

You can put less tris in the nails. Just make them less circular and the point go from the top instead of a cylinder/point mix.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u27/foxymccloud/StuffRender.jpg
That's what I've got so far. I need to make a new texture for the bottles, skin the monitor/keyboard, and make the barrel texture smaller. Total tris are: 510. Monitor/Keyboard: 156 Barrel: 276 Bottle/Broken bottle total: 226. I need to think up some more stuff to make. :(

Sorry, they are triangles, not polygons. I refer to them as polies out of habit xD. I wasn't aware that Halo CE supports 2 sided triangles so I just modeled in the inside as a precaution. I'm not well versed with what HCE is capable of so maybe I should just stay out of the contest then.

To make something 2 sided in CE, use the % symbol in the material ID name.
At least, that's how it works with levels. I'm assuming it also works that way for scenery, but I'm not completely sure.
Also, I DID get rid of the cylindrical part of the nail, and it looked more like a thumbtack. If I got rid of the point, it'd be a screw.

look at rule number 1 of the contest...
1. objects must be equal to or less that 300 TRIANGLES, not POLYGONS. sometimes you people get that confused.
he wants them to be low poly. k?

I think a dumpster isn't needed to be made...
They want things that you find on the floor, not big things like dumpsters, they will probably make that and with higher def textures than the specification.

Too low res to be worth something in a High-res mod.
Is there anything else you wanted other than trash that could be in a deserted city?
how about Signs? broken signs, scarred signs, road blocks, posters, grafitti, a little fire? Broken windows? Newspaper containers? newspapers hanging around? leaves in the textures that are beside trees? dead trees??

Ok, im changing the rules, because they seem to be getting bad results--you have a MAXIMUM of 300 tris, use as less as possible. For a bottle, dont model the inside, just cap it off. For anything round, use like 4-6 sides max.
