View Full Version : [INACCURATE] Vista - It's started, fine print says it can delete programs at any time

Okay so I've been rabitting on about this before vista was released, these security issues will rape us over.
Now its started..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6319845.stm
Key parts
Vista also incorporates Windows Defender, a security program that actively scans computers for "spyware, adware, and other potentially unwanted software". The agreement does not define any of these terms, leaving it to Microsoft to determine what constitutes unwanted software.
Once operational, the agreement warns that Windows Defender will, by default, automatically remove software rated "high" or "severe" even though that may result in other software ceasing to work or mistakenly result in the removal of software that is not unwanted.
Mr Gutmann focused primarily on the restrictions associated with the ability to play high-definition content from the next-generation Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs (referred to as "premium content"). He noted that Vista intentionally degrades the picture quality of premium content when played on most computer monitors. So vista can delete files and programs when ever they see fit. So suddenly your halo2 doesnt work because they deleted a file, or any other game.
This is why vista sucks, the security measures are kinda good, yet they can do more damage than they fix.

The lesson here is that law abiding consumers pay for things they didn't do.
I highly doubt halo2 would require a file microsoft would delete. I highly doubt any game would require a file microsoft wolud delete. It is possible though.

What microsoft needs to relize is that their stupid DRM/intrusive bullshit will only make people want to pirate software. Why pay good money for something that pisses you off? Piracy sure seems like the better choice to me. Unless of coarse you're like me who has a friend who works at M$ (LOL JAHRAIN) and can get stuff for cheap.

So? Microsoft does have enough sense to let you disable Windows Defender and/or all of the other security components.
And it only deletes programs that it thinks pose a security risk, if if can't clean the file that it thinks is infected, it quarintines it, if it can't do that, it askes you if you want to delete it.
Have you even used Vista yet?

Amen to that. The pirate/anti-pirate war is never going to end, because pirates don't care if it's illegal and big companies are too stupid to realise they can't do sweet fuck all about it.

@ Rossmum about not thinking before my posts:
1) http://www.h2vista.net (http://www.h2vista.net)
2) CMT is moving to halo 2 vista when it comes out as well, the CE section on this forum will die away.
3) There are other forums that are dedicated to all versions of halo, and Halo CE alone, they can talk there.
4) You actually do stuff for the community and arn't a mindless nub who is only posting to get into the CMT section (or are you)?

1. True, but I've posted on forums for games I don't play before because the community was a good one. Some people are here to socialise rather than play.
2. Contrary to popular CMT isn't the only thing keeping the CE section alive. And in any case, I couldn't care less where CMT is going.
3. True, but why not here? The community is good, the member base is largely formed by GBX members, and it's a nice place to hang out.
4. I do? I model something from time to time, but the last time I actually released something for CE was months ago when a friend got my old M16 ingame and Reaper converted some of my Halo PC stuff over. I still don't even understand the basics of how to use the HEK...

Wow, can all the Vista haters please do the world a favor and just go jump off a bridge and die? What the fuck is this article? It's complete BULLSHIT.
Freelancer said it right. It will only delete true security risks. If you don't want it to delete them, fine - disable it. They're not forcing you to use it, they're helping you protect yourself JUST AS EVERY SINGLE OTHER MAJOR ANTIVIRUS COMPANY IS. But oh dear, because Microsoft is doing it for FREE in WINDOWS VISTA, it is becoming a terrible, awful, extremely wrong thing to do. Just because it doesn't "define any of these terms", why should the meaning of "spyware" be changed just for Microsoft. It ISN'T. Gee, whoever wrote this sure used their brilliant logic and thought this all the way through!

What about the video quality degredation? I can't think of any rational justification for that.
jcap
February 2nd, 2007, 02:32 PM
I honestly think it has to do with HDCP. Zeph is correct. If your monitor is not HDCP compliant, the picture defaults to DVD quality, JUST AS IT DOES WITH THE HD-DVD/BLU-RAY PLAYERS AND NON-HDCP COMPLIANT TVs. No where in there does it say that it doesn't have to do with HDCP, it just says that it cannot be played on "most computer monitors". The truth of the matter is that HDCP compliant computer monitors are relatively new, so NO SHIT it won't work on most monitors now.
From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Bandwidth_Digital_Content_Protection
Content providers for HD-DVD and Blu-ray media can set an Image Constraint Token (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Constraint_Token) (ICT) flag that will only output full-resolution digital signals using a digital HDCP connection. If a HDCP enabled player is connected to a non-HDCP-enabled television (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television) set with a non-HDCP-compliant analog connection (VGA or Component), and the content is flagged, the player will output a downsampled 960x540 pixel signal. Now do you believe that the writer is nothing but an avid fanboy of either Mac OSX or Linux, and that this entire article is bullshit?

No, vista directly effects the play back, nothing to do with monitors..
Yeah, it directly affects the output quality based on whether or not an HDCP compliant display is detected. If it doesn't detect an HDCP display, it outputs a lower resolution (approximately half-resolution) as a quasi anti-pirating method. It's quite smart if you understand the reasoning behind it, but I wouldn't expect you to know that, seeing how you've shown a history of not knowing much of Vista to begin with and preaching what you hear.

Its not the fact they delete malncious files, they havent said what they class them to be, therefore microsoft has a loophole to delete any file they see fit in the future, for instance a leak of some sort, a hack, illegal files, any reason microsoft would want todelete a file, now they can and dont even have to ask/warn you about it.

To me, I dont class discussing my views arguments, I havent really screamed and bitched at people, sure I've said I disagreed with what they think but its just a matter of opinon, like I previously said I'm not here to make you all hate vista, you guys talking about it helps me get to know it even more. I like vista more since starting this thread :P Cant we just agree to disagree and call it that? Instead of you telling me I need a reason to not like vista. I have my reasons, you may not like them but still, its my reason.
Actually, this forum is a benevolent dictatorship, like pretty much every other forum out there. How the hell can you have an unbiased dictatorship?? I thought ghost made this place to be able to openly talk about halo 2 vista / vista. That is after all what he told me it was about when I asked him if I could join :) Cease this bickering now jcap? :) This wont end if we both dont give up. I'd rather talk about the real issues such as vista.
Prices
" According to Amazon the UK prices are the same as the US dollar prices - thus Vista Ultimate in the US is $375.99. In the UK its £350.99. The Home Basic Upgrade is $99.99 and £99.99."
Sure a US company made it but I dont see why UK (and other countries like australia) should pay more for the exact same thing (minor a few small things of course otherwise there would just be one universal version :))

I'm not sure, but I think you are paying for shipping costs. Your point about it doesn't matter if you have not used it won't change it... thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You can not say its not worth it unless you try it. Period.

No truth to the issue? There is truth to the issue. "It's started" noting the fact theres more to come. Im just showing you as to what I believe an issue is with vista. There is no truth to the issue. There WAS NO BEGINNING. You thought there was, but it was nothing but bullshit from some paid fanboy to bash Vista in any way possible. No argument he had stood up, and was quickly disproved with literally only 2 seconds worth of research.
What happened to reading every post? I posted twice saying why I dont like vista.
And both times I corrected you and pointed out the truth.

OK.
Just remember, this thread is not about those other issues - it was specifically about the ones mentioned in the article. Thats where I was coming from where I said that there is no issue and you have no reason to dislike it. You can have personal issues on top of that, but I wasn't trying to get at those right now, and I don't want to.

You can have open discussion with a benevolent dictatorship. The key word is "benevolent" in there, and the best relation to this would be a classroom in school (if you have a decent teacher). Whatever they say goes, but they'll take advise from the class to build their lesson plans.
Also, the "real" issue this entire topic about has been settled, as I have said many times before. In fact, this thread is pretty much dead now. The only reason it is still alive is because you are finding a way to blame Microsoft for everything, when it is no one's fault (read: whoever is causing the problem) but your own.

What separates this from everything else out there? Just because it's an operating system doesn't make it an exception from all other products. Yes, it is absurd you're being charged almost twice as much as we are, but you've been through that several times before with all other products from all other manufacturers out there, and sometimes it's even MORE.
