TJ for the 1997 model year (note that there was no 1996 model year; the 1997 TJ was released in Spring 1996). This updated Wrangler featured a coil-spring suspension (based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Grand_Cherokee)) for better ride and handling, and a return to the CJ's iconic round headlamps. The engine is the same 4.0 L AMC Straight-6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Straight_6_engine) used in the Cherokee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee) and Grand Cherokee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Grand_Cherokee). A 2.5 L AMC 150 Inline-4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Engines#150_.282.5_L.29_AMC) motor was available on entry-level models until 2003 when the 2.4 L DOHC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOHC) Neon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Neon_engine#2.4) 4-cylinder engine replaced it. A right hand drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_hand_drive) version of the TJ was available for export markets, and was also offered for sale to US rural route postal carriers. The version offered to US postal carriers was only available with an automatic transmission.
Other changes included the 1999 additions of a larger standard fuel tank, child seat tethers and sound system improvements in 2000, and a new console, steering wheel, and a revised dashboard for 2001. 2002 saw other minor changes including new colors, along with available wheel styles.
TJ Wrangler Rubicon
The Wrangler Rubicon (named for the famed Rubicon Trail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubicon_Trail) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains) was introduced in 2003. It featured front and rear Dana 44 axles with built-in air-actuated locking differentials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential), 4:1 low-range NV241OR transfer case, 4.10:1 differential gears, 16 in alloy wheels, and Goodyear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodyear_Tire_and_Rubber_Company) MTR P245/75-R16 tires. 2003 to 2004 featured a standard NV3500 five-speed manual transmission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission), which changed in 2005 to a Mercedes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz)-sourced six-speed. The optional 42RLE four-speed automatic transmission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission) was available from 2003 to 2006.
A limited run of 1,001 Wrangler Rubicon "Tomb Raider" models were produced in 2003 to promote the Tomb Raider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_Raider) sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lara_Croft_Tomb_Raider:_The_Cradle_of_Life). Along with the standard Rubicon fare, it also included exterior features such as 16 in. Alcoa forged aluminum wheels, Tomb Raider badging, and Mopar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mopar) accessories including a light bar, riveted fender flares, tubular grille guard, diamond-plated bumper guard, etc. Interior features included Dark Slate fabric seats with red accent stitching down the center, silver surround instrument panel bezel, red seatbelts and a Tomb Raider badge with serial number. To match the vehicle in the film, it was offered in Bright Silver.
This is by far the most epic little SUV ever. I've really fallen in love with this vehicle after driving one myself. Theres a 2002 model for sale in a used car lot near my house. Hopefully I'll be able to buy it soon. However I really wish it could do this:

Normally I'd say kill yourself, but a Volkswagen is a Volkswagen, hard to beat german engineering.

Jeeps are awesome. If I were to get an SUV, I'd pick up a Santa Fe though. Better value. If I ever get the free money, I'd definitely pick up a wrangler though. They're the ultimate summer car.

if it's not a 60's era mustang, it sucks, it fails, it's terrible. yes, jeeps are ugly, but they're holding a design cue from military lineage. they're not for being pretty, they're for trail blazing and catering to a completely different lifestyle.

only if you keep adding parts to it, like i did. they're very good machines, with excellently built engines. 300k miles is not uncommon. and yes, i'm talking about the engine, and not the rest of the vehicle. most i ever had to do to mine was a head gasket swap.
they also cost far less to maintain for people who can't replace their own parts than other brands like honda and nissan.

His flex plate cracked and then his started died. Then his engine start leaking which would foul the starter connections and so his car still wouldn't start.

Jeeps are for army wannabes. If you want a car that has four-wheel drive and a retractable top, buy an Audi TT convertible with Quattro all-wheel drive. Better reliability, lower emissions, and a more comfortable ride.
Personally, I think Jeeps are as ugly as pretty much every American car I've seen and/or rented. The only reason why the army uses them is because they're easy to mass produce and offer excellent mobility with great off-road ability for a lower price. Plus, you can mount machine guns on the back (aka early Warthog), whereas a normal SUV would have the problem of the mounted roof. And finally, a Jeep is the only 4WD utility vehicle that has great rear-view visibility, so say goodbye to back-over deaths and accidentally knocking into pillars while parking. Real SUVs depend on reverse-view cameras and sonar sensors to counter this problem.
If you've got the money and want to look like an army man, buy the Jeep and buy a BB turret to mount on the back. If you need a practical car, the Jeep is a must-avoid choice, not just because it's American but because it's impractical in many respects and has few tech options. Let's see...no GPS, no cell phone integration, and fewer airbags than a Honda Civic...outdated and unsafe.
P.S. no offence towards America in general, it's a great country but the same cannot be said for its domestic automobiles and airlines.
Ironically, if I become some CEO with more money than he deserves 20+ years from now, I'll probably buy a platoon of Jeeps and hire a bunch of mercenaries to drive the Jeeps to escort my car and provide security cover.

My friend's wrangle is a 98 I believe with....200k miles? Somethin around there. He hasn't had to really do anything to it. New brakes, and one other minor repair which I forget what.

Didn't you read Snaf's post? They're not meant to be pretty, they're for those who like going offroad and having fun with friends. Also, the military doesn't use Jeeps anymore, they use the Humvee. Backing up issues? Cameras? I have driven a wrangler before and it was the easiest thing to back up in. Why don't you just stay in vehicle threads that mention your precious Infiniti's and Lexus'.

Sorry I ment his starter died, we found his flexplate crack like an hour or two after it happens because we had been using his car in class.

Personally I drive a 93 Eclipse, and I love it to death, and shit the thing doesn't even have powersteering! Its not the luxuries of the vehicle that make it awesome, its what you do with it, and how you use it. Personally I wouldn't be romping around in some mountain trail in some Lexus Awesomesauce 90000T that cost me 100K.
If Teek wants one of the most well recognized American SUV's around then stop harassing him. There is so many things you can do to a Jeep to make it stronger, better looking. And talk about gas economy, the little 4cyl, or straight 6's are excellent in town and around.
Also, I love my Gramps jeep -- 95 Wrangler Sahara Edition = Sweet sauce.

JEEPs are the best out there for pure fun...
just don't take 'em off motocross jumps like I did... the thing is so front heavy i landed almost perfectly vertical... luckily there was a slight lean and the car came back down on all 4's...
Just take off all the doors and the roof... get a friend to "surf" the hood and see if you don't have the best time of your life or your biggest regret... ha, it was the best time for me, my friend still lives!
JEEPs make you feel like there's nothing you can't take on...
and they have a rustic beauty... the one's that haven't rusted out yet

Practical car? My dad drives an '85 Civic. 45mpg for city driving, perfectly capable of high speeds, cheap, easy parking, low maintenance. We just fixed the thermostat and muffler, runs real easy. Cell phone integration? lol. Not to mention it has a cigarette lighter, and that means it can run pretty much all electronics these days.That's a practical car. Who the fuck needs GPS? Whenever I get in a friend's car with that crap it always gives them the wrong directions. You need to be pretty slow not to be able read a map. I'll stop ranting while I can.
Also teek, paint that thing pink and go on a road trip. :D
