Hi,
I was bored to see the "Manual Update Required! Get it from http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo/downloads.asp" message on my halo CE, so I searched how to replace it by a new thing. And I found how.
I think that would be cool if we create a comunity message of the day, that anouce new maps and stuff, and can be up to date.
Anyone up with this ? :p

It's probaly possible to edit the .exe and change the url that shows the .txt? :D

To do this, you would have to ask Bungie if you can put more comments in their site directory like those ones. Or edit everyone's exe so it is directed to a different site and directory.

Yeah, I know that we need to ask bungie if we can edit their files... I don't think they still care about what we're doing on haloPC. :eyesroll:

well then, maybe some one should start asking them if some of us can keep the Halo PC and CE messages up-to-date for them.

There has to be an exe that holds the location of the url. Which inturn reads it from bungies server....

I'm using ResHacker but when I save the file, when I load halo it doesnt change any thing.
Also, my strings had
"144, "http://www.bungie.net/halopc-motd.txt""
in it which gives me the "manual update required, I tried editing it but no luck..

lol, agreed, lets edit a few things like
145, "Autobalance: Team Change Request Denied"
to
145, "**SERVER**: Sorry, the teams are even, you can not change teams"
that would be much better.

Put something like, "Oh, what, too good for this team? Huh? F*** you. You're staying. B****."

Here's one way, even though someone will have to manually change it. There's a console command to change the message of the day (I think it's sv_motd [insert message, with quotes, here, minus the brackets], but I can't remember.)

That is really cool, soo... ppl can change the Motd For the Entire community?
hmm becareful with this, we could end up with Adds in Halo >_>
who was that dude that now works for bungie that started in CE. mb you could have the Server Msg of the Day looked after by him, and he can change it to advertise recently released maps

That is to set where to find the MOTD file for dedicated servers. Which you would name the file motd.txt.

I emailed KPaul about it, hopefully i'll be able to get a reply over the next few days.

Or, any other name, I have 2 or 3 MOTD files.

Oh good, I hope we can do it, if so, there should be a link to H2Vista.net, or HaloMaps.org in the Message.

If you guys need somewere to host your text files for usage, contact me I can get them up, like so:
http://68.147.211.67/halopc-motd_106.txt
or an idea here, would it be possible to create a program that automaticaly downloads a replacement Strings.dll and replaces the default one when there is an update? You could then host the modded txt file on a web site, create w/e ads and stuff you want, give the auto downloader to people who want it, and there ya go, spiffy new messages for the community. You could put map updates or news on Halo 2 Vista, ads for clans mb?
For my clan I posted a download to a modded Strings.dll, they download it, I update the motd every now and then, we win :P

Just make everyone's Strings.dll point to the same spot, like http://www.h2vista.net/motd/haloce_motd.txt, and we will update it there. If someone could change the Strings.dll to point there and then contact me on AIM we could distribute the new file. Also, make sure you replace the URL in the newest Strings.dll with the compatibility fix: http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=959

so do we actually expect the whole comunity to use this?
has any body tried asking bungie to let us use that page to make MOTD things? (i don't really see why they wouldn't. it would take an employee 5 seconds to proof read it)

I get a message telling me haloce.exe is corrupt when I use that .dll ghost :x (I have a 256mb card, and SP2 too, very odd). Here's the strings.dll that comes with halo, with the URL changed: http://files.filefront.com/Stringsrar/;6703364;;/fileinfo.html

Yea, after thinking about it more and how it works, you wouldn't need an auto downloader unless you were changing the URL all the time.
I have this setup for my clan right now, I have clan updates and stuff on it.

Right now I think we should use h2vista.net's hosting (no offence freelancer)
as long as some one regularly updates the .txt to say things such as new maps out and other CE information (rather than just "hai itz me hereLolz")

I'm doing this for my clan, if the community in general wants to use H2V, I don't care.

Then we might actually get people playing custom maps

Does the motd have to be a fixed length (It'd explain the large amount of spaces)? You should write some sort of web interface to update the motd (obviously only admins would be able to do it), and make it automatically add the spaces, etc. Probably not worth the effort.

February 12th, 2007, 02:52 PM
No, I think it can be as long or short as wanted. Right now it's pretty easy to update the message of the day, but we're looking to get more people using it and still there isn't much to announce right now, haha.

Wrong Ghosty, there is a limit, it is quite large though, I tested that right away. I could test what the character limit is if you would like.

And it would be better if bungie/who ever gave TheGhost ftp access to the origional file. I really doubt everyone will know about these new strings and new people won't know about them. Unless you do a lot of advertising.
