The textures themselves look good, but I don't see how a gun that rusted and dirty could operate (the second one). Like I said though, the textures themselves I've got no problems with.
Because it's from hell? Dunno, just looks gross, compared to the pretty one, which is what I aimed for.
Dane, you never cease to amaze.
Who made that model? It's pretty cool.
Guy on the team goes by the name Phaeton. We've got some pretty talented people on the team, and as far as I know we need more. They'd have to be able to make some really good stuff that fits the bill though.

Just from my artistic standpoint, I think you should make the engravings on Heaven glow a very icy sky-blue, and the engravings on Hell glow a burning, mottled, crimson-orange. Also, some gold and rust embossing on each respective handle would look nice. A combination of two separate styles intertwining on each handle would add so much more to each of your already high-quality skins.

Both guns look really nice! I think that Hell could use a bit more grime/wear/general nastiness around the back of the cylinder and percussion cap area but other then that I can't really comment on anything else.

N. The glowing blue good vs the glowing orange/red bad is so cliche. I hate it. I like the way it is now- subtle. You don't need to beat us over the head with glowy effects. It doesn't need to be supernatural. I like how it's realistic and pretty, and has that sort of symbolism present without screaming to the world "look at my symbolism".

and heathen, I made it fairly hi poly so I could get some good detail out of it. I'm going to mudbox a normal map for the thing too. I want this thing to be the most awesome thing I've done. The release heaps of little flood things, like those ones that explode. Dane the color is looking much better and the wings. I don't know if both pics are the same but the second one I like better than the first. The color of the wings looks better? Also, what are those things you have put on it now? The things that like.. stick out? They look like... weeds or flowers that have yet to bloom or are dead. Are they meant to be something like that? And one thing that I just noticed. It does not appear to have eyes or ears? Or a nose for that fact... Should it? Hmmm...

Again, that layer is barely doing anything at all, other than the actual cracks. The layer itself is greyscaled and leveled up to absolute white and black.
I'm sick and tired of everyone expecting a quick fix for everything. Sure you can use photos sometimes as overlays, but make a character texture out of one? lmao, no sorry. You'll have to paint like the rest of us.

or maybe... considering this would be for SP..., if it is a direct hit to a friendly AI it turns them automatically, thus making your goal to take down the flying beasty as it will cause complications in the long run. If it does not directly hit just have it explode and do minor radius damage but with a cool flood 'gib' effect.

Basic textures done. I'll finish later in the week when I've freed up some homework.
Also, Polygon Cruncher for 3dsMax OWNS. I reduced the biped and the egg low poly models to around about 4000 and 500 triangles respectively, without affecting the uv coordinates or the silhouette of the models hardly at all.

it needs to be extremely squishy and quivery and blobby. If you can rig and animate it like the exploding infection form pod scenery things from Halo 3, that would be awesome.
Hm, on that note, maybe it should be slightly translucent, with only a hint of some vaguely disturbing shape moving around inside it.

Hm, on that note, maybe it should be slightly translucent, with only a hint of some vaguely disturbing shape moving around inside it.
1 word for you.
Custom Edition. I have to think about polies here Rob. The actual flood form itself, then this thing as well, plus all the other shit in CMT, I have to think about performance for the average user. I'm not about to start sticking shit inside it.
also BioCroc, way to be a pompous git. I'm not even going to bother with that one.
Also you people are forgetting that flood pure forms are more symmetrical. I haven't even played halo 3 and I know that.
OH, FD, this flood egg will be dropped on mass from the big flying form, and when they hit the ground, since they will be AI, they will roll towards enemies. That's if we have time. Otherwise they'll just hit the ground, swell and explode.

It would be like the Antlion pods in HL2 that you throw at stuff to make them pop out and attack. Ha, but if you were to copy HL2 to a degree, that would be funny to have a ton of flood parasites come out of nowhere and attack whatever the grenade hit.

It will look much better in game. Trust me, I don't know how to render normal maps properly with ambient occlusion enabled, so there's some lack of depth there in those renders, but I just can't pass up the lovelyness aocc provides, so fucket, what yas gunna do.

looks good, but i'd do something like you normally do with your weapons, Every scratch has a story. So formulate mb a story that involves a slight Cut, or a faded small scar, hell mb even a weird mole somewhere.
Fine details really do count and i know ya busy, but these small things go a long long way to making it into a believeable character. From a glance at my face in person you'll notice some very small things that dont stand out yet are noticeable. Such as the mole i have on one side of my face.
my brothers got a small scar above his right eye where he hit a bag hook when he was in year 3.
hell even something as small as a nik from a razor when he was shaving.
DaneO'Roo
August 19th, 2008, 06:18 AM
I'd do those things but I'm waitng to talk to the guy on the team who has the hi res mudbox mesh. Id do the stuff myself, but mudbox files are usually 200 mb + in size, so I'm just gunna tell the guy what sort of stuff I want on the face, and he can put it in the normal map, then I can put it into the diffuse and specular accordingly.

Its because the grey background makes it really hard to see the dark black clothes, and since they're black in the first place it makes it hard to see the details on them unless its brighter.
But that really does look amazing Dane, the amount of detail is something id expect from a professional game studio.

It looks to much like an elite, but I like where your going with it. Remember that the sentinels recognized chief as a "reclaimer" because of his armor, so the mjolnir and the forerunner armor suits should have a similar appearance, preferably in the visor region. If you ask me, the helmet makes the suit's "character", and the visor is the coup de grace of the helmet, so it makes sense for the visor to look similar in shape and placement.

I didn't say Tech = aesthetics. By Forerunner technology, I meant whole technology. Whole guns, whole vehicles. Sure the Covenant might have changed the Forerunner armour to fit their races, and they might have purposely chosen the shiny blue colour of the plasma rifle, but it's entirely possible that other than mild alterations Forerunner equipment looked very much the same. Because again, technological alteration = heresy.

I may just. I was thinking of learning zspheres and zbrush with it.
Also, Pooky has nailed it on the head in terms of the direction I was taking with this thing. It's going to be covey like, but more the anatomy of a "being" that is a mix between elite and human, with more angular edges and more circuitry like details not unlike the sentinals. MY concept is a bit too curvy, granted, but when modelling time comes, It'll actually be a bit more edged and defined, and not clean and well kept like covie stuff is. Very ornamented and will also try to incorporate holograms into it somehow.
Also, I've been learning Material Expressions in Unreal Ed 3, made a nice forerunner texture material, heres a jewtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5K2Zw1w73Y)

My spin on a blackhawk helicopter.
It's a scenery piece only for the UT3 mod, Warm Gun, which is why the model itself isn't exactly true to concept or detail. There was a poly budget. Pipe down ok. I then did further put my own spin on it with the texture detailing, I don't know helicopters or aircraft ok, but fuck you.
I would like to just say, I skinned that entire thing in one day, today infact, from 9 am, till 10 pm ive been sitting on this dam chair, handpainting normals and textures ALL FUCKING DAY, since the thing was due tonight.
I know it's a bit rough in places, and it IS meant to be weathered and rusty, so don't go shooting your mouths off about that. I did this in one sitting, so it's not exactly perfect yet, but it'll do for now.

Fuck, I need to finish that ******* so you can skin it.

Looks far overdone. To much rust, grime, etc. It looks like someone parked it in the Vietnamese jungle and left it for 3 years.

I don't know helicopters or aircraft ok, but fuck you.
Wow man... jeez.
It's like you're daring someone to criticize it :\

It's fucking supposed to be rusty you moron. The thing has been sitting outside in the one place for over 50 years in the mods storyline. It's a dilapidated scenery prop. It's not meant to be usable. I thought I mentioned this.
My team wants it to be even rustier and dirtier than that. For the level it's going in, this thing should actually be covered in dirt from head to toe.

I'm really fucking sick and tired of people in this community not being able to see the direction of something. I'm sick of having to fucking explain everything.

Your always making last minute excuses to cover your ass. If you had said it was supposed to have 50 years of dilapidation instead of just saying "its supposed to be a bit rough in places" in the first place then you wouldn't have to get in these little tissy fits.

Yeah, really dude.
I love your work, and have never said anything otherwise. But you blowing up at a community who is here to give crit (even if it's bad) doesn't even make sense. You give off the impression that all you want is someone to say something nice to you, and if they don't they can fuck off.

Wait, who's covering who's ass?
it IS meant to be weathered and rusty
Seems pretty clear to me. Frankly, unless you know exactly what the purpose is it's not a good idea to give stylistic criticism and then be angry when it's brushed away like that. It's not a matter of growing balls, it's a matter of being put off by having to explain every little detail to people to avoid them talking about stuff that isn't "crit" at all. Style is incredibly subjective past a certain point, and unless you're the one who came up with the vision you're in no place to call out people for not having "balls" for disagreeing with your comments. That goes triple when he did explain that the style was meant to be beat up - it's not up to you where "weathered and rusty" becomes too much, because it's not your vision.
Yes, Dano might have been more agressive than necessary, but that's what happens when you always have to explain what the style is because people focus on it rather than the actual content.

No one here gives a crap about your bad attitude.
My attitude is a reaction to pure good ole fashion stupidity. Quit with your fence bearing straight and true attitude. Your not in any position to deal out assumptions and judgments on behalf of the many. Who the fuck are you anyway?
Grow some balls and deal with "stupid" criticism like a man or don't fucking bother to post your work.
I deal with criticism fairly, what I don't deal with, is wave after wave of braindead banter that seems to miss the fucking point so dam much I have to spell it out for everyone. I post something, and you all seem to invent your own context for it. What the fuck.
Your always making last minute excuses to cover your ass.
No, I'm having to spell out every last detail to satisfy the fucking bumhuddle of shitty critique bandwagoners after i've posted something, because they invent their own direction for something, even though they never actually fucking made the dam thing so they wouldn't have a dam clue.

"Scenery object that has been sitting in the one outdoor open place for god knows how long, in a desert blown war ravaged landscape. The team actually wanted it rustier and covered in more sand."
I said that before you posted your first comment, therefore your argument is null.
You clearly just look at pictures, make assumptions based on how YOU would like the thing to look, don't fucking read, then you try to defend yourself by taking the "righteous indignation dollar" and attempt to corner me into some "holier than thou" gargoyle pit, when it is in fact, as I said earlier, you projecting because somewhere along the line I've pissed you off somewhere, wether it's here or at halomaps. Your biased.

I'm not angry that he doesn't take my criticism. I don't care about the outcome of this project of his, I was only giving an opinion based on the information given, and of course, the picture. What irritates me is his attitude about criticism. It's all too easy to ignore posts, but he insists on being childish and attacking people.
On another similar occasion, on halomaps the other day, that wave of posts that he and masterz called "retarded" was entirely Danes fault. He posted a picture with a bunch of "conditions" that changed the appearance of the elite's shielding, plasma flares, glowing sword, etc, and without any explanation. Then he and masterz explode on the curious and uninformed replies like little children.

No, thats what happens your immature and recieve an unfavorable reply. What confounds me is that so many other members react exactly the same to criticism and get neg-repped to hell and banned for it. Terror and hunter are some pretty good examples of that. Yet its perfectly acceptable when Dane does it. Isn't that funny?

But also consider the crit from the small minority of people who do know what they're talking about, and try not to be overly defensive as the line between the 2 can easily become blurred and someone who does have the best intentions at heart might get confused with a trolling ignant. Just take every crit form every point of view and actually take the time to revise what they're saying, don't automatically dismiss it.

I love it, but I think you went a little crazy with the paneling. Could you be bothered to add some color to the diffuse? Like a drab of olive green, or gun metal black. It just seems to silver for my tastes.

I agree with kalub, there's far too many panels on that thing. It gives me the impression that it's a transformer with 6 inch think submarine armour plating. Peeling green paint would be hot too.

Now that is criticism. It's based on objective open mindness and observation, not subjective personal reflections and misinformed ignorant hatemongering bullshit.
OBJECTIVELY PEOPLE. NOT SUBJECTIVELY.
QUESTION, DON'T STATE.
Anyway, Con, Croccy, I agree. Thing is though, It'd be way too hard for me to change it now. I'd be better off restarting the whole thing, which I CBA to do. I could, just change the bump map and repaint the diffuse, but maybe at a later point when I have more shit free'd up.
Btw, just to point it out, it doesn't really have near enough panels, the problem is that the panels I do have are way too defined and the edges are too thick, so they really pop out. What I needed was more fine ones and less thick ones. The fact that the nature of the piece is rusty and dirty doesn't help the lines either, because they fill up with rust and water marks, so they get accentuated more in the diffuse. My bad really, but if my team doesn't mind, I don't mind.
I'm also going to add some camo pattern to it I think, It'll be quite faded and scratched up, but it should introduce enough colour variation to keep it looking interesting. I don't want it to blend in too much, but I don't want it to pop out, I don't want people to see it, I want them to notice it, that way it's more fluid and natural.
Also, I agree with Mech.
I also disagree with Chains, because Tweek is right.

Dane has a point though. Anything he makes he has to explain which I have noticed. It was a bit agressive. But I can see why when people don't use their imagination.

I guess it might be too late to play with the model but on the door lets say you might want to put a plan there with a seperate bitmap that has an opacity map. I have seen a few cars in the woods that are totally rusted out and a helicopter in this environment I'm sure would be too.
