Long ago p0lar condensed the vshot and shot tags into one thing, so you dont need em. Lovely shots, i've never really seen great shots of anywhere in hong kong (and ive seen your others, like that bus and the meat seller, etc), really great work.

Your photography is amazing, especially that first one of the building. It's such a move towards abstraction that it's hard to tell what it is at first.
This is a good thing, of course. VERY pleasing to the eye. :)

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. It's an HDR shot which is why it looks so strange. Not being able to tell what it is was what I was going for when I took it, as I also have some generally uninteresting shots of the building too.
For all those that have asked, I use a Nikon D80 along with the kit lens 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 (which I'm soon going to replace) and a 50mm f/1.8D lens. (I also bought an SB600 flash with a lambency diffusor yesterday)
Soccerbummer, about the Canon XSI, it's a great camera, but it still irritates me because of there only being one control dial (most/more advanced cameras have two). But it's more about the person using the camera than the camera you have. I say look around and find a camera that you like to use.
For the full size images (well technically they're half-size, if you need the full 10MP image, just ask):
#4 (http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs24/f/2007/330/4/3/Mui_Wo_Sunrise_by_ReaperManHK.jpg)
#5 (http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs19/f/2007/238/4/4/Gravity__by_ReaperManHK.jpg)
The 1280x800 image as asked:

Also, another abstract.

So how much is that going to cost you?

I think you read it wrong, I already have all the stuff i mentioned lol. I'm looking to replace my kit lens, maybe I should edit that paragraph <_<
The lens I wanna get to replace that aint cheap though and it's getting harder to find (because it's an older model) so I may even be forced to spend twice the amount I need to get the newer one (which is an awesome lens) which is pretty much everywhere. I don't have that kinda money. D:

lol, I figured as much. I don't even have my own camera.
My mom is a daylily hybridizer (she makes flowers have sex and have babies), and she sells the results of cross-pollination on her website if they're any good. Well, she uses a Canon Digital Rebel XTI to take her pictures, but she has NO CLUE how to use it properly.
I WANT her camera, because it's comfortable and all, but the lens it has doesn't have nearly the zoom range I would like it to, and it has barely any macro capability (I've wanted to try that for a while now). That and it's an $800 camera... so I can't afford one unless I save up my christmas monies for a long while. Ah, well. Sooner or later, I'll afford it. :)

Camera stuff is cheap here in Hong Kong :downs:
Also, for macro photography, you need a macro lens, ask Timo about that, he recently got a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens for his 400D.

Too blurry imo.
I've always loved the distinct details on flames, but this one seems kind of.. blurry?
Reaper Man
August 29th, 2008, 10:43 PM
Well, as the temple was dark and somewhat drafty, even a shutter speed of 1/160 was not enough to freeze the movement of the flame. Also, shooting at such a large aperture (f/1.8) bright objects tend to have a kind of halo glow effect.
ICEE
August 30th, 2008, 12:47 AM
I like the blur of the flames tbh. It creates a definite contrast between the amount of detail visible on the candle + it's wick and the flame its self

Not sure. I'm sure you could apply an unsharp mask to video frames within a video editing program (Vegas, Final Cut Pro etc), but that would take quite a while to process.
I don't do videography, so I'm making guesses here.

As I have probably mentioned before, the topic for my IB art coursework is Time, so I decided to take somewhat of a cliche and turn it into a sequence of images. This is a multiple exposure of 4 shots of a droplet (obviously, lol)
How I did it:

About 1 or 2, it took a lot of patience, those two photos are multiple exposures.

Just getting one drop for some of my photos was hard enough, although my system was a bit retarded. Holding a turkey baster over a pot plant holder and dropping, woop woop focus.

Took me about half an hour to get all my equipment set up (was running around school, stealing stuff from the science labs, lul) and to get the exposure right, then about an hour of taking lots of droplet photos. Double period of art.

This is inspired by my previous works and a suggestion from my art teacher to work with sequences. I attempted to replicate one of my previous photos and continue on with it, but I just couldn't get it right, so I decided to go through all the stress of doing one from scratch.

While I lack a fancy-schmancy macro lens like Timo has, I managed to get this manually focused and metered photo of a moth on my window with a reverse-mounted lens. I'm quite impressed with the detail it picked up, as I was using a really cheapo lens that came with an old film SLR I have, I would never use this thing as a regular lens, but as a reverse-mount macro lens it performs quite well. :awesome:

So I've been experimenting with my Rolleicord. I decided to try scanning in my own shots, after receiving average quality scans from the developer from my first roll of T-Max black and white film. So far I have only scanned in 3 shots, will finish the rest later - it's kinda stressful due to dust everywhere D:.
Behold, my first ever color slide film photo. Taken without a lightmeter - I had to guess the exposure with a table on the back of my Rollei. Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the shot info. All I can tell you is that it was shot on a Rolleicord V with Velvia 100 120 film.

Uh, I'm not sure exactly. Firstly, define "good skills" secondly, charge based upon your level of experience. I feel I'm quite inexperienced (~2.5 years of experience) so I don't charge very much. Thirdly, transport times and costs, consider getting these covered.
Additionally, for an event like that, you will almost definitely need more than a camera and a tripod. In fact, you shouldn't be tethered to a tripod for an event shoot, unless you're doing some formal group shots. You'll most likely need a flashgun and a couple fast lenses. You may need to rent equipment, consider that too.
To be honest, the best thing to do would be to discuss it with the people you'll be shooting for.

This woman was wearing a garishly colored headdress as part of what she told me was an Easter tradition in New York city, where people would make and wear strange hats. I asked her if I could take her photo, and she agreed. I took several, but they were posed shots of her smiling, then she was distracted by something and completely changed her composure to this strange look, which I captured.
What is she thinking? Why is she making that face? Is it disdain? Smugness or simply boredom due to me taking several photos of her?

While wandering the streets at night in New York, I came across this junk drummer, I had to grab a shot, too bad it was real dark, so I had to really bump up the ISO. Ah well, in attempting to correct the color cast of the streetlights, I ended up with these nice muted colors.
I regret not shooting this in RAW, would've had better detail/resolution to counteract the graininess.

I know what you mean, I only recently got over that. I find, if you wanna do street photography, a good way to practice is to take photos of street performers. You give them a little change, then take their photo, so you feel a little less guilty about getting in their face with a camera, and you don't feel as bad getting a little closer, because for portraits like that, the closer you can get is usually better.

So I finally got a roll of Ilford Delta 100 that I shot on my Rolleicord V, several months ago, scanned. Here's some of the results. This guy is down at River Street, Savannah almost every day, playing his trumpet. Mostly he musically teases people by playing cheeky tunes - for example that stereotypical Egyptian tune if somebody with a darker complexion walks by.
He pulled me over when he saw me walking around with my Rolleicord, and we talked for a while - at least a good 20 minutes or so. I then accused him of never playing any tunes all the way through to which he responded by grabbing his trumpet and playing me a song.
I just had to photograph him, but it was getting dark to use ASA100 film so I had to use my D300 instead of my Rollei, oh well.
http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs51/i/2009/290/4/c/Cart_by_ReaperManHK.jpg
These horse-drawn carts are a common means of showing tourists around Savannah, they cause no end of problems with traffic, and the horses cause the street corners to smell quite literally like a horse's ass. I don't see what she's so happy about, maybe her horse left a particularly nasty one at a corner somewhere and she's boasting about it.
http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs50/i/2009/290/a/2/Women_Smoking_Cigars_by_ReaperManHK.jpg
These two women are two more interesting people I met simply because I was carrying around my Rolleicord. How often do you see two women sitting on the street smoking cigars? So after having an interesting conversation with them, I just had to take their photograph. I took some shots on my Rollei too, but as of yet they haven't been developed.

The first one would've done better with a much more shallow depth of field, with either the hand, face or instrument being the primary focus. You have it going already, but more exaggerated would've been better.
Second one could definitely do with some different framing or positioning on your part. Not totally in your control but, those are the circumstances.
Third is a nice casual portrait. Too bad the backdrop is so light, it would've been nice to capture the smoke a little better.

I like the first shot of the trumpet man better because it kind of had the guy leaning away from the camera, showing power being used in his notes, and there was just a little view of the reflection in the end that you could see there was a sidewalk with someone walking on it. Second shot just looks too blurry in the parts not focused in on.

Hm, interesting, I never really though about why I think the first shot works, I see what you're getting at really, but I never really considered the implications of the shot. I guess I sorta follow what Ansel Adams said: "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs."

B&W may seem cliche, but I find that it gives a focus on texture and lighting that is often lost in color photographs.

Black and white is considered cliche, because it is overdone, badly, by many people. I shoot in black and white, because I find, for street photography, that most shots are visually overwhelming in color. In black and white, one focuses more on the subject matter.
E: Also what Siliconmaster said.
Here, compare these two, personally I prefer the black and white because of the slight overexposure - she's black (yes, literally too, but that's not what I mean) against the white background, so she really pops out. But obviously which you prefer is subjective.

I "demoed" a class where they showed off a whole bunch of different photography, drawing, and 3D modeling classes at a college. It was a four day thing, and on the third day they had a 3-4 hour long nude photography session where we took turns coordinating the model and all shooting simultaneously.
It pretty much got rid of all my inhibitions about asking people for photos or poses and such. However I'm pretty sure the model we were shooting was fairly intimidated by the 30+ teenagers with DSLR's surrounding her and giving orders, heh. You should try one :)

James lives by choice in a tent in his sister's backyard. He says that his sister's kids are too loud early in the morning and always woke him up when he stayed in the guest room.

I took this as a proof shot before using my 35mm SLR. (Plus, the focusing in this shot isn't all that great)
James practices learns a new song every day and reviews his music in the mornings, during his lunch break (when I took this) and in the evening. Sometimes when it's late at night, he'll not actually play, but simply practice the finger motions for the piece he's learning.

My First Photo Essay
After many weeks of shooting and over 30 hours in the darkroom (in one week!) I have completed my black & white technique final project at SCAD. I decided to make a photo essay about a saxophonist I met during my usual wanderings about Savannah.
James Rinalducci
Saxophonist James Rinalducci wails his tunes down on River Street and in the squares of Savannah, Georgia.
After visiting Savannah for the annual Jazz Festival, James fell in love with the city and quit the restaurant business in which he worked for 25 years to make it as a musician. James promptly moved to Savannah, where he moved in with his sister, her husband, kids and their pit-bull, Castle. Interestingly, James lives in a tent in his sister’s backyard, rather than indoors. This works for James, as he says his sister’s children can be quite rowdy early in the morning, and would wake him up if he were to stay inside.
James began playing the saxophone at age 12 and stopped at age 14, when he got switched over to the tuba by his high school band director. He didn't pick up the instrument again until age 35 and hopes to never stop playing again. James plays a Conn 1928 Gold Lacquered Portrait Lady that he has fondly christened “Gilda,” after the 1946 movie starring Rita Hayworth.
James is exponentially expanding his musical repertoire, learning new tunes every week. Alongside playing tunes and improvising, he composes music based on conversations he hears and transfers their tonality into music. His conversational compositions possess a unique, flowing sound that can have short, abrupt notes alongside drawn out tones, like phrases and exclamations in conversation.
Every day, after playing in the morning, James frequents various cafés around the city to refuel and update his journal. In this journal James records his day, his earnings, people he meets and tunes he has learned or wants to learn. It is also a to-do list, the success of which varies.
After coffee, James plays until the evening then returns home and practices, composes and relaxes after a long day of playing on the street.
If ever you find yourself on River Street, in Chippewa or Reynold’s Square, keep an eye and an ear out for James and Gilda. He tells me he plays in Reynold’s Square because he can see his ultimate performing destination – the Lucas Theatre, so keep an eye out for him there too.

I'm actually working on one right now.
Here's a preview:
He goes by the name River. Living nowhere and sleeping in bushes, River has been on the streets since he was 13. After 15 years of wandering from his home state of Rhode Island, River made his way to Savannah, Georgia –for now. I met River in Forsyth Park when he tried to sell me weed. As usual, I was wandering the city with a camera, when I heard a “hey, that kid looks like he smokes pot.” For those that don’t know me, I have scruffy long black hair, so I suppose I fit the demographic. I just laughed and was about to carry on my way when River motioned for me to come join him.

I have no idea how I missed the saxophonist story, but I just read/saw it. Listing things as I read it again:
- Oh dears, I was one of those directors that had students switch instruments... but in fairness, they were always better on the new one.
- That Portrait Lady is probably worth half of Savannah! Where in God's name did he get it??
- I think my brief career in jazz was a million times slower. I probably learned like, 1 new song per gig, maybe. That ability to learn so much (chord changes, ahhhhhhhhhh) in a brief period of time is admirable.
- Those compositions alone could put him on the map. Has he ever considered publishing them?
- lol'd at the "Didn't do any of these." My Outlook calendar would have that on entire months at a time.
- Lot of sus. 4's in there...
I'm definitely looking for him if I ever stop around there. Great essay!

Haven't taken a photo I've liked in a long time. I have a bunch of darkroom prints that I love that I need to scan, but here's a digital shot that I actually like, so.

Wow that's pretty fucking cool.
I mean I kinda hate how confused I got at first glance, but if a photo requires a second glance it's a good shot.
When you ask to take portrait shots of people, do you usually tell them to do something specific ("turn/tilt/twist your head", "look past my ear", "blow smoke in my face", "show your tits")?

Nope, in fact they usually ask me what they should do. I just tell them to relax, and just talk to them about whatever, taking photos so they get used to it, until they let their guard down. That's when the real portraiture begins.
I'm all about depicting people as they are; though I appreciate fashion photography/glamor portraiture, it's too commercial and fake for my liking.
Tl; dr, I'm a photojournalistic photographer.

Really beautiful, though the red from the heat does seem overwhelming.

It was taken on the hottest day this summer in Hong Kong, the sky was overcast, trapped all the IR light.

Wish it didn't cost an arm and a leg to remove the IR filter on Canon sensors :c

I didn't remove the filter, I just put one on the lens... It means the exposure time is crazy long, but it still works.
