I feel like my skills in this are maturing fast, hopefully it improves more. 11 exposures shot for every single one of these. I'm hoping to get a 1.8d soon, so I can do a little more extreme in-the-detailed shots. All of these are shot with the standard D40 Kit Lens, and a crappy old tripod.

I have many friends who focus on buying equipment, but they never bother to actually use each purchase to it's potential. I'd kill for a 1.4 Sigma, or a damn nice telephoto lens. It's really easy to take advantage of what each item has to offer, I just don't understand why it's always underused! The Kit Lens isn't "instant" to capture shots like these, as I had to spend over 5 minutes standing in one place taking the same shot, with a high aperture, as to preserve the kickass background.

Very nice stuff, although the one with the guy with the cart seems a bit noisy in terms of how much activity is going on. The other guy in the background is a little bit distracting.

9 exposures on that one. In my newer ones, many of them are 11, and I'm trying to aim for even higher dynamic range from in-between exposures.

I've updated my list, went on a trip and just shot and shot and shot wherever I could. First page.

Not a big fan of your latest HDRs, you really overdid it with the tone-mapping. Some of them look decent, but most just look over-processed, especially the cityscape one. Try re-doing it with more light smoothing and less strength, because there's hardly any deep shadows.

Ever tried placing an hdr on top of the original photo and turning down the opacity?

Personally I think that HDRs should be subtle, of course there's exceptions, and creative reasons, but HDRs, especially of landscapes, which look fake, really can ruin it.

Don't rely on HDR to make the photo look good. Try reprocessing that waterfall one with less strength (which is the name of the value in Photomatix, which I'm assuming you're using?) I think it would look great with deeper shadows (I quickly messed around with it in photoshop, but I the rocks sure looks more three-dimensional when I darkened the shadows, whereas your rock looks somewhat flat, also the shot seems overexposed too, it's meant to be a high dynamic range, whereas yours is quite low.)

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing what you've done. Also, I thought you might like to see what I meant by a subtle HDR, I found this awesome shot on deviantART and realized, "wait, that photo is impossible" only then did I notice it was an HDR.

Also, here are some examples of good "overprocessed" one, the colours are clearly from an HDR, but since the light smoothing was high, it the photo itself came out relatively normal looking

An HDR image is an image that has a dynamic range greater than the eye can see. What you are seeing in my images is technically not HDR, but it's created from an HDR. Since we can't see the wide dynamic range, the image is tone mapped to balance out the exposures. This is why the sky is perfectly clear, and so is the landscape.

New games use HDR. In COD4, for example, when you leave a dark building, the outside sky is incredibly bright for a few seconds while your view adjusts to it, and then it becomes clear, and then the inside of that building is incredibly dark. It's used incredibly well in Crysis, from what I've played.

The human eye adjusts to different exposures in the environment. The way it's done in a photo, is that the same exact scene is shot over and over again. The minimum recommended is 3. The greatest can be anything. I shoot 11 shots, each shot has a different exposure. If the exposure is very low, the most visible aspect of the shot would be the sky (if it is outdoors), while the rest of the image, the trees and the cliffs, would be dark. As I go higher, the sky becomes white, but the trees and the cliffs become visible.

Then these images are combined into one, using the Merge to HDR script in Photoshop, Photomatix, or any other program. From there, you have an HDR image (.hdr), where it can be used in a render to simulate realistic lighting and reflections on objects, or in a game. Or, it can be tone-mapped down to an 8-bit JPEG like every other image, and it gains a unique look based on the artists ability to adjust tone-mapping properties. A standard .HDR is 32 bit.

I was wondering what everyone would define my style of work as. I'm working towards is building exactly the kind of work I do.

It's all good!

If you have a Digital SLR, switch into Aperture priority, adjust your aperture to whatever you wish for the scene (lower for depth of field, higher for field detail), then press down the exposure button and adjust it for each shot.

If you have a Point-And-Shoot, each is different, but I'd go into Program Exposure and just adjust the exposure. There should be a button or setting for it.

To me your style of work is definitely characterized by excellent use of lighting. I don't know if that constitutes a style or not, but I know that whenever I see a piece of your work my first reaction is "wow, that's really nicely lit." lol.
I know it's not very helpful for me to repeat what you've heard a thousand times, but it's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of your style.

I actually have a classic f/1.4 from KEH, all manual and metal, and it works beautifully! 30 bucks!

also some of your stuff seems to become too complex to "read". which is fine because i think it's great to push work until it's broken that way you learn what works and how far to go with something to get the best out of it. some times simplicity is best though.

I agree with your views on HDR, the focus should be on the content of the photo rather than the "cool" way it's been processed. People usually put too much emphasis on the HDR itself.

Actual IR filter. It takes FOREVER to take a shot though, considering my camera isn't IR-modded either. Works beautifully as long as you keep a long shutter.

Oh sweet. Yeah, I'm aware of the time it takes to do so. I wanna get my hands on one to use with my new Rolleicord, but it's hard to find niche stuff like IR filters and the adapter I'd need to mount a screw-in filter to a Rollei bayonet in Hong Kong. :phonegonk:

CalArts, MICA, SAIC, and Pratt. I was deferred from early action Pratt because of my poor academics (My high school did not work well, the traditional school system and I are nowhere near friends). Really, I don't even have a keen interest in going to Pratt, and just applied for the hell of it. My main interests are CalArts, MICA, and SAIC. SCAD is more of a middle ground, but now I can call it my backup!

The only two items that have dramatically saved my ass have been my personal statement essay (which I wrote "stream of consciousness" style), and my portfolio.

I would compare it to RISD, which is a great, damn good school on its own, but only in a traditional aspect. The whole school is academically art-based, rather than artistically academic-based.

The lens is an old Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. The filter is a clear piece with darker edges.

Ah, it must be annoying to guess the metering with that thing, because according to your EXIF, the lens doesn't register with the camera/is a non cpu lens.

Yeah, I guess. I've become pretty adept at it, when doing reverse-macro photography/using my Rolleicord. But now that I have a D300, I can meter even without a lens, I feel so spoiled now, the camera does a lot for me, haha. I find your work refreshing in its simplicity of subject choice, my photos have become a bit too artsy-fartsy lately, I think - been overthinking my shots (not that you don't think out your shots, of course).

I gotta try some of the stuff you've been doing. Keep up the great work man, always a fan.

Nice stuff man. I saw on your flickr that you said you were imitating film, and it was done very well - how did you do that? If it weren't for the EXIF data, I really would have believed it was shot on film.

Once an eye for composition is established or set (or is already natural and completely second nature, something you never have to think about anymore), then the rest of the information about the structure of photographs themselves becomes open and easier to understand/see/interpret.

I completely ignored the idea of old-style effects, and went back to the core of what makes film different than digital. It all comes down to the layout and composition of the grain, color control (increase, not decrease, and focus on the tone), and individually working with each color channel. My goal was to completely destroy the argument that "digital can't be film." It can visually be the same thing. It's just the processing that's different (but when the actions are translated to digital...it has the capability of becoming the same thing, done through numerical values rather than dark room processing). I also use old glass and apply some self-modification to the lenses and glass. I treat my shit like a child instead of being obsessed with cleaning and properly handling my equipment. At the same time, anything I buy has to be cheap (under 30 for lenses and under 5 for equipement, aside from the camera itself).
