Well, I don't feel like posting the exact same pictures that I've posted before, so I'm not. Instead, I'll post some new ones, some related ones, and some reimagined ones. :D

This one is older than this forum by at least two years. Was inspired by an error in the original Halo manual for the XBOX version, in which the plasma rifle icon was accidentally overlaid on top of the needler icon, giving an effect similar to the above.

Also, the shock trooper was inspired by the Furies in Battlezone, the Super Battle Droids in Star Wars, and the Necrons of Warhammer 40,000. I say it turned out rather nicely.

He's a Soviet Russia/WH40K/Halo lover, and he tends to mix in lots of all three. It probably is. :p
. (again)
However, that is not a Lasgun; it is a bolt-action Nynczek Teknologies Karabine Model circa 10317EE, and fires proton clusters (actually, clusters of dense positive ions) at near the speed of light (you do not see any beam shoot out from it, you see a blue flash, a hole in the target, and a thin, whispy trail of steam from the barrel to said hole). In short, it is a particle accelerator weapon, firing with the force of .81-09...that's 81% of 9kJ.
The sword is a powered nano-composite blade that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies in order to disrupt nano-composite armor (I won't go into detail about what nano-composite means unless you really want me to), plasma fields, etc., and with plasma contained in a hollow centre core to cause maximum wounding effects. In short, you can't duel with these swords (they would shatter each other), but you can cut through just about anything, as deep as the sword will go (yes, they own lightsabers in that sense).
And all of these technologies are feasible, especially considering that the year in the picture is 10414EE.
Also yes, I have thought all of this stuff more thoroughly than any sober person should ever think his drawings through...

Warsaw
October 6th, 2009, 08:50 PM
Good eye, sir. :v:
Inspired by (favourite anime, clearly), but work nothing like. Those tubes serve to collect some of the water vapour and cycle it back to the boiler, improving efficiency. The Imperial planes don't have such appendages because they use plasmagnetic rockets and thrust-vectoring, powered by a matter/anti-matter percussion engine. You'll see this one soon enough.
On alien worlds that had no life prior to human colonisation, there aren't any fossil fuels to be had, so I need a propellant (steam, as it were). It's essentially a steam-powered low-bypass turbofan jet engine with World War I styling, because there are no computers and humanity just had a nasty dark age. Flight is assisted by heated helium stores in the wings and the nose of the aircraft, since that shit is heavy. Gravity is also generally slightly less than 1g on most inhabited worlds, so wings don't need to be as large for lift (wings also short to reduce target area).
I has physics. Last Exile does not.

October 7th, 2009, 08:41 AM
If the planet has lower gravity than earth would that not make the atmosphere less dense and so needing longer wings to catch more air?
Warsaw
October 7th, 2009, 04:28 PM
Not necessarily. It depends what the atmosphere is composed of too. Take Venus, for example; it has lower gravity than earth, but the atmospheric pressure is immense due to composition; it more than makes up for that lack of gravity.
Anywho, more pics:

Description:
Designed by Daimler Motorwerke starting in 8059EE, the Slipstream '67 (or Slip '67) was intended from the outset to be a high-flying civilian aeroplane capable of very high top speeds, a sort of hotrod of the skies. With a relatively streamlined shape unheard of in contemporary craft and two of the powerful new Daimo.715F powerplants, the plane can reach a top speed in excess of 400 knots. When Calais dug into North Doppelstadte in the late 7900s, the Ersten military urgently required a plane for long range reconnaissance and patrol work; with no immediate designs in the pipeline and troops dying en route to the North, they pressed a modified version of the Slip '67 into service, designated the R. IH, with the less powerful Daimo.715G engines to extend range and hardpoints for weapons. Intended for extreme high altitude, the large control surfaces result in excellent roll rates, average yaw rates, and slightly below average pitch rates, making this plane ill-suited for a turning dogfight.

Isslédovan-Ross Model 10308 Mk.IV*
Class: Linear Induction Rifles
Type: coil accelerator
Standard Rating: .606-08kJ
Maximum Rating: 1-08kJ
Weight (unloaded): 4,1kg
Magazine: 10 or 15 round detachable box
The Weapon:
After serving for almost three centuries, the Nynczek Teknologies Gewehr Modelle 10017 was looking long in the tooth. Indeed, it was heavy, slow to charge, and extremely lengthy. Seeking to remedy these inhibitive characteristics, the Imperial Ministry of War held competitions for a new rifle to replace the NTG. Two of the Imperial firms, Ross Armouries and Lynchpin Gunworks, submitted designs for trials in 10299EE. It was found that the Lynchpin design, while unique and very accurate, was ill-suited for battlefield conditions and so the contract eventually went out to Ross Armouries. Originally built for the .88-07kJ round, the weapon was modified in 10307 for the .606-08kJ and subsequently called the Isslédovan-Ross M10308. Mk. IV is a misnomer, since there were no previous marks of the Isslédovan-Ross, where the * (pronounced "star") indicates that it can accept the new-style Mk. XIX powered bayonet.
The Isslédovan-Ross M.10308 Mk. IV* is a standard manual bolt-operated weapon with a single large locking lug to maintain simplicity. As a cartridge is loaded and closed into the chamber, a pair of electrodes on the rear of the firing pin assembly access the power source in the stock, thereby charging the capacitors down the length of the barrel. Upon firing, the firing pin pushes a bead of copper into place on the cartridge's ignition cap which completes the circuit inside the cartridge causing it to discharge its energy stores and subsequently fire the round.
The Round:
Early on it was decided that, in order to simplify logistics, the .88-07kJ cartridge would be retained. As the years went by, improvements in the LiR technology would allow for more powerful rounds to be developed. in 10307EE, the Isle of Isslédovan released the .606-08kJ round as the standard issue with up to 1-08kJ being available for varying applications. While the .606-08 is less powerful than its predecessor, it was found that not more than 3000kJ is required for a full-power rifle round to penetrate the armour of Ersten and Calais troops and that the lessened recoil improved marksmanship.
The round is essentially a small railgun within itself. Inside the tungsten carbide casing are a series of ultracapacitors toped-off at the factory. These can maintain their charge for up to ten years before losing power. Attached to the capacitors are two steel rails separated by a hard rubber insulator, reinforced by a sheath of rubber, aluminum, and then three rings of steel. Between the rails lies a veritable grain, generally composed of osmium or tungsten and with a ferrous core. At the base of the round is a pair of electrodes topped off with a brass cap with a copper insert. Upon firing, the firing pin pushes the copper insert between the electrodes, completing the circuit and causing the round to discharge the grain at hypersonic velocities; said grain is then further accelerated down the barrel of the gun via linear induction or coils to speeds approaching the relativistic. Everything inside the casing is vapourised and dragged out out of the weapon as a vacuum forms behind the grain.
/*-----------------------------------------------------------------------*/
Didn't finish the seal underneath the weapon's name. @_@ Also drew the two perspectives a little too close, so I had to cut the bolt slightly short.

March 7th, 2010, 08:38 PM
I actually like his better than yours. Your design gets lost in the lack of line weights and parts just get to busy. His just has way more visual interest. Even the sight on his was an interesting touch (though pulled off poorly).
Warsaw
March 8th, 2010, 11:25 PM
True. Not going to lie, I didn't think of using line weights, and it does look really busy especially around the front end. To be fair though, I drew it intending to shade it later, and since I can see how it would look in my head I kind of overlooked the weights :saddowns:. Will do next time though.
I don't like his interpretation, since all it does is make a couple of indents into the top and bottom of the weapon to make it appear angular. He also totally ignored Covenant physiology when he added the trigger. Mine was more focused on taking the original feel and adding some actual mechanism to it (i.e. the magnetic coils to accelerate the plasma forward).

Yo, that's like my actual figure right now. Rest of my body is perfectly fine, but my arms are scrawny.

Me, I'm skinny all over. So maybe I have a bit of a bias when I draw, because I end up utilizing myself as the figure model when I need one.
Dude's arms look pretty scrawny, other than that, cool.
That's because the pads he is wearing are around the same thickness as Level IV body armour...even on the legs. The helmet is also necessarily huge. Other than that, it's just straight-up BDUs.

No really, look at how skinny his arms would be if you took his sleeves off. That's like, emaciated.
Warsaw
May 29th, 2011, 11:10 PM
Exactly how much space do you think there is between the sleeve and the arm? The armband is about the thickness of his biceps.

General looseness of clothing accounts for a lot of perceived size, so I would say it gives the look of having one damn scrawny arm underneath.

Looks like he has a robotic left arm. What is firearm? Looks a lot like the Halo SMG. Suit looks like Leia's disguise in Episode VI.

No robotic left arm. Just stiff drawing technique. This one is older than some of the stuff on the previous page.
This is a side shot of his gun:

Also, it's essentially a beta design of this character, so the suit isn't final. I had jousting helmets and the Halo Hunters in mind when I made the helmet and Combine in mind for the rest. I still think it needs some serious revision to bring it all together. Also, the fairy has nothing to do with the picture. I just didn't want to remove that doodle.
E: You know what's awesome? The brown smudging in some of these pictures is black powder residue. I drew quite a few of these after shooting some Enfield 1858s at a Civil War "living history" outpost.

I like the Leia look honestly. Most people probably wouldn't notice, and I always really liked that design. That design just seems very Star Warsy for whatever reason.

Warsaw, you should head over to the Penny Arcade artist's corner and set up a thread for yourself. There are some brilliant professional artists on there, and it's one of the best places to get good crit.

I never thought of that. I think I'll do that once I get some new "finished" pictures done.
I wish I could scan those huge pictures of mine without having to go to FedEx/Kinkos, since some of them are actually rather nice compared to these doodles.
@TVTyrant: I wasn't thinking Star Wars at all though. I never think Star Wars because the cheesiness of it does not mesh well with the hyper-realism I'm going for in my universe. That said, the helmet is not really going to change much, since it is the defining feature. It's the body that bothers me.

Even with your unfinished pictures, if you get stuck, you can post in the Doodle Thread (currently named Tim Schafer's [Dudle] Legend)
Also, make double sure you read the forum rules, and whatever you do, stay on Lewie P's Stepdad's (the admin's) good side. This can generally be accomplished by not being a dick, so you should be in the clear, but fair warning.
Also, the server there performs worse than this one, so if you see "the server is too busy", just wait a few minutes and hit F5. That forum's got like, thousands of members. The version of vbulletin they use was never designed for that kind of load.

Ugh. I need Photoshop. This picture is 18"x24" and I tried to scan and collage the most important bits (the whole helmet is actually present in the drawing). It's a self-portrait.

Which is why it's in scraps on my dA. The bullet icons are a bad idea, the health percentage is a no-no, and the glow is too intense. I just thought it was interesting enough to share.

Its giving me a vibe like is a member of the MA5 series meant to use a heavier caliber of bullet. I like it, someone model that and put it in game right now.
Warsaw

Well, the AR does fire 7.62 NATO. In all of the games, it handles more like something firing 5.56 NATO and part of the idea here was to make a gun that looks like a punchy, accurate rifle rather than a bullet hose. I would probably use the BF2 M4 firing sound for this in-game (yeah, I know that's 5.56, but it fits).
I actually debated calling it an MA.7D.
