Ross ur doing it the old wrong way. Chunk by chunk, you don't need to. Fill everything on your texture map with the same metal material if it's using it, and flood other areas with other materials if they use them, and skin EVERYTHING at once. you
ll get better blending in the end and it'll be much quicker. Also, if you learn a bit more, you can just bake a shadow map and an ambient occlusion map rendered from max onto your texture to cut out alot of time, so virtually in the end all your doing is details, rather than wasting time on all the big flat areas.

I like doing things the old-fashioned way. vOv

I generally find I work better if I do things in segments. If I do the whole thing at once, I end up getting overloaded, or forgetting things, or rushing them, or just generally fucking up. This way, a section has to be complete and up to scratch before I even consider doing anything else.

As for AOs... I don't know how they work yet, and in any case, it'd be both pointless and detrimental on such a low-poly model when there's no high-poly handy (and I'm not making one). I wouldn't have shadows where I need them, and I would have shadows where I wouldn't need them.

Maybe once I progress onto larger maps and more detailed models I'll start learning some of the fancy baking stuff people do, but until then, I'm happy with doing everything by hand.

E: but jus to give you some criticism, I notice something seems off with the pose, not entirely sure, just doesn't look convincing enough that he threw a ball. (didn't even notice that, thats what it was supposed to be at first glance). Something with his throwing hand seems off, I'm not sure. Thats just my opinion, not entirely sure how you'd fix it, if your happy with it though keep it the way it is.

Text quality seems a bit low too, but it probably doesn't matter.

Also is something gonna be on the back?

You might want to consider putting the person on the back and something different in the front too, or just the text in the front, with person on the back.
(different combinations might look better or worse than others... just some suggestions...)

Megapixels and image quality are irrelevant once your camera is 5MP or more, it's about lens quality, this whole megapixels = better is a massive misconception. Generally higher MP = noisier photos due to higher pixel density. >_>

I have no idea why, but I like how renders look without smoothing, its just a fetish of mine. :3

Reloading and charging with the right hand just makes more sense anyway, you have more leverage holding up your gun instead of awkwardly trying to hold it up by the grip.

Maybe if the fingers were a bit more spread, like he's trying to get a grip on it...

This. spreading the fingers out more might give it more of a gripping look, also maybe bend the fingers slightly more (almost so only the finger tips and hand are touching the ball, not the entire length of the finger) and I agree with the punch, its really good if it was some random person throwing the punch, but the form is off. It should twist more as mentioned above.

Looks good tho.

Rob Oplawar
September 26th, 2008, 01:39 AM
yeah, for one thing his thumb should be opposed. Also, maybe if you had the fingertips bend down just a bit and the knuckles bend up just a bit it'd look more like a grip.

ICEE
September 26th, 2008, 05:17 PM
If I bent the fingers any more theyd be inside the ball. But can you please explain to me what exactly is wrong with the punch? the fist does twist, but there's only 3 frames between origin and the impact position. It's very hard to see the twisting.

Where the desert meets the structure looks really odd. Sand doesn't behave that way. The parts meant as rock walls look unnatural in how they blend with the structures and the surrounding sand. I suggest looking at some photos for reference. It's a decent start though, also work on your poly distribution--some parts lack a lot of detail, not just the structures.

I know about some parts but basically this is my first serious attempt at modeling a level.

It's going to be a 4 section map, each section roughly 2x the size of that.

There will be 3 rooms, a side room and the room above you see basically mirrored to the other side. The two rooms will be divided by up-and down bars small enough for bullets to get through but not people. The dividing bars will stop eventually and then an open top for grenades to get through.

The third room will be the way you get to the other side in CTF levels.

I know it has errors and all but it's still a WIP not quite in need of it's own thread. I'm mainly looking for things which I could add to this idea.

ExAm
October 12th, 2008, 06:35 PM
That gun would be pretty awkward to hold the way the thumb would be. Plus the stock is so curved as to be uncomfortable upon firing, and not tall enough either. There is no point to the muzzle brake holes just in front of the grip. That would deprive the bullet of critical propulsion. The trigger guard is too small for the finger to be inside it without touching the trigger. Should be room for at least two finger widths in front of the trigger. This gun has a front sight, but no rear sight, and the lack of a rail on top indicates that the scope mount is a permanent fixture. Thus there is no use for a front sight.

Furthermore, this gun has no bolt.

As far as the art quality is concerned, you've got texture there, but it's fairly fuzzy, and the shading on the scope gives no indication of roundness. That and there are a few unnecessary brush strokes that don't define much of anything, such as the two on the lower part of the rear grip.

Overall, it's a bit of a mess. At least it looks like a gun and the painting is decent-ish.

+2 for effort.

My art class is a bunch of whiners. "This is soooooo haaaaaard i hate perspectiiiiiiive!"
So I pick the most complicated object in the classroom just to piss them off :v:

two point is hard? they should try three point. Even then, you can ramp it up to some four point+ perspectives to get some really warped visual spaces.

What is up with her ankles? It looks as if her foot is directly attached to her shin. Armpits, it's as if you've extruded them inwards, sharp outlines.. makes no sense. Hair - looks as if it's just been placed on top of her head, not growing out of it.

Holy cow, you know, for some reason it never occurred to me that fisheye perspective like that formed hyperbolic arcs like that. That's worth knowing.

Maybe render her from different angles? something about her lips bothers me, but I can't tell from this angle.

Made a quick low poly ODST helmet. Nicely UVed.

Anyone can uv map and scale them big enough to look like there's no distortion. Post your uv layout, then we'll talk.

Is that some sort of pokemon mewtew + halo elite?

It'd look sick with the elite looking towards the shot TBH, it looks good so far though. Make sure you clean it up after doing the colouring.

Its just a quick sketch, the actual concept will be facing at a diagonal angle to get both side and front details and will be painted.

Nice looking Scarab Hunter. It's too bad I have no respect for the Halo 3 scarab at all because of how fucking weak it was.
Direct main cannon hit can't kill my warthog on Legendary? pfft.
