Oh god the proportions and facets are WAAAAAAAAY off. At least take a glimpse at some reference material before attempting to model anything. Look at H3's Spartan ODST Helmet, H2/H3 ODST's, the Landfall and Prepare to Drop trailers, and maybe even the McFarlane toy version.

The proportions are off, and more polys couldn't hurt.

DEEHunter thinks he sent me his odst helmet model, and i just copied off of it. With exact vertex placement. What I did was use his helmet as a reference, as it looked easy to me model. I can easily see differences in his picture, and mines.

I'm pretty sure that when you throw something, you have to pronate... which would be bringing your (left) hand over to your right side when you turn your body to throw... Just looks like he's swatting at something in yours. Right hand animation looks great though. I'll leave it to the experts from here...

The designs of the things make no fucking sense at all. Who makes these things, and why do they have no stylistic resemblance to either army?

Thats a good point. Only the grav lift and active camo have a definite origin. I wonder, is the bubbleshield UNSC or covenant? the trip mine seems to be UNSC but it has a forerunner-ish design.

Sever
October 20th, 2008, 08:46 PM
The Power Drainer, Radar Jammer and Flare are Brute (notice the grip-bands wrapped around the handles, as seen on other Brute weapons), the Gravity Lift and Deployable Cover are classic Covenant, and the Tripmine is Human. The Auto-Turret is obviously Forerunner, and the two other campaign-only devices (Invincibility and Cloaking) are some form of Covenant apparatuses. I'm guessing that the Bubble Shield and Regenerator are both Covenant as well, due to their usage of shielding, but they both could be Human as well, due to their visual characteristics and the fact that the UNSC coppied and researched Covenant shield technology.

Hey guys I found some sacred artifacts of our gods laying around these ruins. Let's toss them at random into gunfights!

I guess that could make sense for the Brutes, but would never be done by Elites. Which would sort of explain their abrupt appearance in Halo 3.

rossmum
October 21st, 2008, 10:34 AM
The Brutes seem to care more about their beloved 'Great Journey' than the actual Forerunner themselves (and by extension their stuff), whereas the rest of the Covenant tiptoe around shit to avoid breaking it. They're pretty much just there for the winnings, really, so that does sound entirely likely.

Question: If Engineers can make shields that are impervious to all weaponry while still allowing freedom of movement, why wouldn't they be on vehicles? Or even infantry?

I don't buy the 'they're Brute' theory.

Besides, the Covenant are supposed to use existing technology, not make it. Since technological advancement is heresy.

I recall reading in one of those trashy books that Cortana was easily able to convert Covenant plasma weapons into a vastly more effective form, and the only reason the Covenant hadn't done so was because it was considered heresy to alter their lord's creations.

Yes. What does that have to do with it still being a game and not always having to make sense with the story line. Canon might not have been the right word.

Alright, now I know what to crit :p

I think the proportions are off on her face, perhaps not against usual anatomical refs but compared to who she's supposed to resemble her face seems too narrow and the distances between the various parts are off. I've just played around with that render and the closest match for angle I could find and it does seem a bit off, I'll send you some more pics to work off. I could be wrong and it could be the angle/lack of hair throwing me, but it never hurt to be sure.

Also, try avoid anything too muscly... she shouldn't look like an athlete, but nor should she look like she's been to McDonald's every day of the week. Try find the middle ground, something that would fit a fairly young and fit person but not one who goes out of their way to look the part.

Base colors, what I used to create the tones on the man there, you pick out a certain set depending on what color or age you want him/her and blend them to create what you want. Detailed areas like cheeks, forehead and center nose tend to be render then other areas, while on men the jaw area tends to be a grey steel or chrome color blended for an aftershave. Then the other colors are just natural ones.

You've got different techniques clashing in that piece. In the water it looks like you used a filter or a brush that makes that pattern, but everywhere else (except the stars) is sketched. They don't mix nicely. Parts of your image are blurry and hand drawn, others stand out and ruin the good parts. I'm also having a hard time seeing shape. Though you generally did a good job shading, the perspective is confusing and it's hard to tell the difference between one plane and another.

Chainsy
October 26th, 2008, 11:21 PM
I always have trouble with ice, but I wanted the ice to stand out, as in smooth ice bright ice versus jagged rock. Also I am aware of the distance of planes issue and am working on that, can you be more specific on what parts need to be less sharp or less blurry?

Con

that really depends on your style. I like to keep things detailed, but it takes much longer.

I dunno if you remember this drawing of mine:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3011/ruinsxp1.jpg

You can see I got bored of it and stopped, and i never achieved the detail I wanted consistently through the image. The foreground is nice, but the background was rushed I think. I also didn't spend enough time on laying out the pic, I just started drawing once and this was what I ended up with.

Texturing makes it look more like some kind of gray harlequin fetus than an elite.

Make a higher polygon version, bake out some bumps and use that to help give your texture more detail. Right now it looks really flat, ugly and boring.

Chainsy
November 1st, 2008, 10:41 PM
Not my model, it is going into CE, so no bumps, so I can not truly make it unflat unless nugget redoes the model. I will bake when I have the lines done, and I am keeping it a neutral grey since it s a biped for obvious reasons, instead of skinning it red, white, green, blue, purple, orange, ect. Grime and stuff will be added with a detail map.

rossmum
November 1st, 2008, 10:45 PM

D: chains it looks really flat. Also, if this is h3mt's elite, shouldn't the elite look like halo 3's elite? Don't put so much detail in one place, it distracts the eye, and frankly, it looks like the elite used a torch to burn a maze design into his helmet. I'm expecting to see a mouse running around in there somewhere looking for the cheese. I can appreciate the attempt at detailing, and maybe it does look good on the unwrap, but really the details your adding are things that should be modeled in, not skinned on. Elites usually keep it clean , so the grime and chipped paint you added don't really fit. A few light burns or scratches might look ok, but this doesn't really look right to me.

I am not giving it up, I just need to learn a bit more before trying at it, and since I will not change overnight, it will keep the owner of this elite waiting, when someone else could skin it just as good, maybe even better. Sorry if it came off in the wrong form to you, but I am more laid back and when it doesn't work out, I either restart or just toss it out, not cry myself to hydration and never touch an unwrap again, sorry if you misunderstood.

If you look at some of the diffuses that end up in games these days, they're more or less just flat coloured. I find it ironic that your barrel is also shit. I'm going to take a stab here and say where the seams meet up, its mirrored, isn't it. The "streaks" look terrible, the sticker looks slapped on, theres no real detail, it's just grunged red and erased on a layer above what looks like flat grey. No rust, no decay streaks or peeling paint, where your rings are, the detail makes no sense at all, you have a sort of gaussian amount of wear and tear which also makes no sense. It's quite obvious you slapped on a grunge brush or something to get your details, because it doesn't look how it should. A better job could be done within 20 minutes.

Use mine or bungies as a ref if you have to, i'll send you a dam jpg of my textures, just fucking fix what your doing, because your details aren't covie at all, and they look like a sketch. Stop using your mouse or tablet to do those details, because your drawing skills aren't up to the job. Use the pen and line tools.

Also, do each layer of height on a seperate layer. Deep parts, blacks, bottom layer, whites and absolute highest points, top layer. Anythign else inbetween. The selection tools are probably the most useful things in photoshop tbh.

Chainsy

the hand movements when he goes back to grab the grip don't look very natural to be honest. it looks a little too flowy. When he pulls the magazine out, it doesn't really look forceful, and there could be a bit more time between mag out and mag in. I like the animation overall though. Where did you get the rig?

Oh, sorry, didn't see this post. Thanks for the crit, and I just kinda searched around on fpsbanana.com for rigs, and models, and that kind of stuff.

Did a little work, still need to get the fucking highlight on the upper heatshield lined up... thing is a pig to do. Will begin on the stock once that's done, I think.

Don't do what the big devs are doing these days. They're all getting excessively lazy and putting no effort in, relying on normals, spec, and God knows what else to make things look good. If you look at some of the diffuses that end up in games these days, they're more or less just flat coloured. It might be easier and some people might actually think it looks better, but it's a bad habit to get into because if you do need to rely on the diffuse alone later on, you're fucked.
just.... no.

Tweek
November 3rd, 2008, 12:25 AM
dude.. the diffuse is SUPPOSED to be nothing but flat colour, that's what the fucking thing IS FOR!

rossmum
November 3rd, 2008, 12:36 AM
It depends on how well the engine handles lighting, and exactly how plain the diffuse is. If the engine has brilliant lighting then yeah, leaving that up to normals, specs, etc. is fine but to call out an example, I refer you to the HL2 Ep 2 sniper and autogun. Both (so far as I can tell) rely heavily on the engine for lighting and detail, and honestly both look too much like plastic. Even though painted lighting doesn't always match the environment, I'd rather have that than matching lighting which looks like shit and kills all the detail. The other thing though is when people literally make it almost a flat colour with no differentiation at all, fancy advanced lighting or not you need some variation on the diffuse.

On another note,

Tweaked according to Snaf's crits over AIM, looks a lot more pre-loved now

Why do you have so many scratches where those segments join and not on the top where they should be? You're also going to add some detail to the part behind the ejection port right? The top would look good as a lighter colour too btw, not to make it look too much like the H3 AR but just to break up the monotony of it right now.

DaneO'Roo

Because bungies original AR uvws are fucked, thats why. The top is stretched like a 12 year old at a gang rape.

But yeah, pretty much what Dane said. I'll probably add some detail to the arse end later on before I start on the stock and grips, been at it all morning and then playing Halo all evening. I need a bit of a rest.

I'll probably draw up some more later. One of the things which always draws me back to Halo is the stunning beauty of the Forerunner environments, and while I've been meaning to make a map for some time I kept giving up because I didn't have any real objective. I still haven't got a set-in-stone ground plan, but I definitely know what I'm aiming for now, and I want to get this done.

I was having trouble capturing the 'feel' of Forerunner architecture, but then I threw the Halo 3 OST on and it all became clear :-3

I'm using another person's model as reference for the thumbstock part of it since my old one had loads of smoothing errors. This one is finally nice and clean and pretty. I actually intend to finish this one (Ross, please don't murder me D:).

BTW, that smooth part was a BITCH.

The only time you use that much sponge is when you're making galvanised surfaces. Lose the contrast on that layer and work in some (credible) grunge and damage. Don't use blobs of solid white, make full use of blending options, layering, and brushes as well as selection and brightness/contrast. Damage should be grey or silver, never pure white. And for Christ's sake, do something about the lighting. Unless this is meant to be next gen and you're going to add normals and such in later, it needs shadows and highlights.

I know who I am :P

Also, the basic pattern flow is decent, but if it's intended to be forerunner, it's not really getting there at all. The bump and soft spec is pretty nice though.
