I wanted spartans to have a more futuristic look, on the subject of messy, its a simply greyscaled concept to get across the image of what it is, basic shapes, nothing too fancy and only took a grand total of 20 minutes.
I hated blocky spartans, they just never did it for me. Also I can not add much variation to the normal spartan armor as its been raped to hell and back by everyone else before I even got to this forum, so I have to make do with making something a little more new. Right now I am trying to keep the halo feel, while adding something completely new, trying to find inspiration on google.

Another thing I notice about most of your renders is that woman's facial expressions. They seem rather...robotic. Try to put more emotion into it, rather than having her just look at something with a somewhat bored face.
HL2 citizens have the faceposing range of a brick. It's either very subtle or they look like they just stepped out of The Idiots of Garry's Mod. The only characters who have tolerable faceposing are the main ones, particularly Alyx. I don't want to ruin the picture with a grin that would put a chimpanzee to shame or an angry face that looks like it just stepped out of Loony Tunes, so I keep it fairly neutral.

That came out wrong, What I was trying to say is that the detail on it doesn't look like something that would be on a spartan. And it seems to cluttered. I don't see much wrong on the UMP. Would you care to clarify?

Wait, is that what you used for your modeling reference? Never use something that low-res. Also, please tell me you have other references too. A few side shots and several from different perspectives work best as you can properly work out proportions and such.
Here, about a minute on google:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/HKUMP45.JPG
It's a tad blurry, but it's higher res, and I can make out some things that I couldn't in your reference image. Just go out and search for more pics of it.

K, was making sure you had better references than that pic you showed. Anyway, I realize it's the low poly model, but if it doesn't look like an ump, then it doesn't. I'm not around guns often enough and I don't model them often enough to be able to tell you what's wrong with your model. Just wait for snaf to reply or something.

Make this smoothing group different than the smoothing group on the main blade face.
Make fatter.
Make this the write shape.
Edit:
The extruded part on the blade which attaches it to the main weapon, its a hexagon sort of shape, you need to change smoothing group on the bevel outsides, the slanted parts, if you know what I mean. CHange the smoothing group to someing differant than the top face.

I would love to see more original content, or at least not every other post having a remake of a halo weapon...but I cant control that. :confused2:
Here is a remake of Famas F1. I had modeled it a while back but it was crap so I decided to redo. It is one of my more recent models. I will eventually get to adding a few extra things like. (Silencer, Iron Sight, Grenade Launcher, ect...)
1060 Polys
Here is your Wireframe:

Probably not until after a few more important things because I'm wanting to make a fun Christmas map for halo. Along with a Total Conversion Mod I am also working on for halo. Thus I had to restart from about a 9 months ago due to loss of files. :( (Ingame Screens and Renders soon.) 2 weeks I will be back out of school for Christmas Break and that will last for 3 weeks so I will have a bit of time on my hands.

How do you give advice when there's enough references around here to make it 100% accurate. Instead of practicing ANOTHER H3 weapon how bout we practice making a NEW weapon not modeled often, and if it's good, put THAT in a map instead. That sounds MORE like a win-win situation don't you think?

References don't help you improve, people do. It doesn't matter what you model, if somebody can give you some good advice on not just how to improve that model, but they're skills as a whole, then hopefully they will be able to get something use that to make anything they want to.

well for one, either turn on shadows, change the type to adv. ray traced and get it far away enough from your model that you have decent lighting over the whole thing or lose the lights and turn the diffuse map to 100% self illumination so we can see your texture.
And lose the background, it really is completely worthless when trying to show your work.

Even as a speed painting it's lacking anything that's really... i don't know. Anything. Perspective isn't really there, purpose doesn't appear to anything... you have some good elements in there, honestly, like the trees or shrubs in the lower right corner (but that's the problem; are the trees or shrubs). Most everything else is muddled and unsubstantial. If you're going to speedpaint, at least make the focal point or points recognizable.

Well was bored today, so decided to try a fun little exercise, in which I have an hour time limit to paint in a character. So I decided to plan this a little out, and decided to base it off the final scene in the most current halo wars trailer featuring the arbiter as he looks out to the cliff edge. Obviously I could not paint the whole scene in an hour, so I did a quick sketch of shoulders and back facing the camera at an angle and his head looking away from the camera, but him looking out with the corner of his eye. Hope you enjoy.

yeah and some people are stored in jars because their parents lived downwind from chernobyl when it blew up
think about it, there's certainly a difference range but overall there are set anatomical rules that are only broken in the case of severe deformation. that doesn't look like an elite's face, it's entirely the wrong shape and the proportions are out.

Halo Wars, and thus yours. I know some people will probably disagree but having spent much time in all 3 Halo games, that just does not strike me as an Elite's face. It looks more like some generic alien from some other sci-fi game/movie, because it looks overly monster-ish. Elites aren't exactly beauty pageant winners but they aren't supposed to look like the bogeyman, they're meant to look like proud and tough warriors with incredible intellect. It's hard to describe in any sensible terms, but the look that's going on with that screen looks more suited to a Brute, not an Elite.

Oh well that just fits the background story of this one, seems he was too cruel a soldier, even for the covenant. The other elites look better, like in the original trailer. I think though that they wanted a darker, more dangerous feel to the elites, as since your looking at this from a more infantry point of view, elites look like monsters. And a giant creature wielding a glowing sword with the strength of 20 humans and is 8 feet tall sounds pretty monstrous to me, especially since they're hellbent on destroying the humans.

Yeah, but the difference is that for all their physical strength and religious zeal, the Elites are probably the smartest of all the Covenant (with the possible exception of the higher Prophets, the lower ones are most likely just useless diplomats). Even the most insane Elites are very much concerned with tradition, ceremony, honour, etc. and so portraying them outright as monsters is kind of stupid, really. That's for the Brutes.
Chainsy
December 5th, 2008, 08:54 PM
Have to agree with you there, but ensemble is keeping this in mind, from the video the elites are worried about the relic they're using, it only seems this one is unconcerned. Also even though elites are smart, and great tacticians, they also do not find a problem dying for that honor, think of the sort of Japanese in world war 2 with the kamikaze charges, they were brainwashed by higher ups to sacrifice their lives in the thought of honor, and would kill themselves rather then be captured. Its the same with the prophets with the elites, expect the prophets are just as delusional, but they still know they are keeping the elites in the dark.
rossmum
December 5th, 2008, 09:00 PM
Yeah, but the Japanese didn't morph into scaly monsters no matter how brainwashed they were. As far as I'm concerned, Bungie got the Elites right the first time around and anything else is certainly not an improvement.

I will bet you anything that that's the exact effect they will use in Recon (betcha they tie it to what was the flashlight button).
edit: @onotix: at first I was going to criticize you for using an old flag, but then I noticed the gun. :P

If the gun is firing, why ain't his finger on the trigger?

Isn't it obvious that hes using his mind to fire the gun? That's why his face is like that of course.

Oh I thought he was making that face because of the obvious way he is using his nut sack to mount the stabilize the gun.

All good theories... but only 1 knows the truth.
Anyways, I started practicing more on painting textures since I'm terrible at it. I think Ive made some progress. I dont care about the design, I would like to know about the painting.

It looks like a solid foundation, but you'd definitely want to add more detail to the main blocks, get something under them (like circuitry that may or may not glow etc).
You actually gave me the missing piece in my textures: contrast.

I see a few on the butt of the carbine, and one near that area that looks like a triangle is overlapping another. Take a look at that in turn mode in polygon selection mode and turn some triangles so that they are not overlapping.

Also, killer, what's wrong with the "oval" shape on the grip? Is it done wrong?
Also, I should note that some of the wireframe wasn't appearing when I rendered, so it does make some things look awkard.

No, it's attached to the grip, but if your talking about where it looks like the wireframe dissapears, that's just what happened when I rendered. No maatter what I did, I could not get the wireframe to 100% appear everywhere, I think it may be the omni lights are too bright though, idk.
Disaster
December 7th, 2008, 01:36 PM
I'm pretty sure its doing that because you have a 5 sided polygon around it. Set your edgeloops up properly and it should fix your wireframe issue.

You don't need the inside of the suppressor's barrel modeled in. You can put that in via bitmap.

The wireframe appears fine when in 3ds Max, but when I render it it dissapears on someparts like the "oval", inside of the hand grip, and some of the trigger guard as well. Will what you said fix it when I render though? I don't have access to the max file at the moment so I can't change anything to see if it will.

Alright, I'll be sure to fix that if I ever do get around to texturing it.

Another quick concept of 30 minutes, just a lone forerunner mining facility.....
Screwed over to hell and back by lava, might be collapsing, might be in working order, up to you to decide, but I find that it was mining, but hit several large lava veins, flooding the entire valley.

Hunter as i've told you before in this thread, this thread is for getting crit on your work. If you post a render people are going to look at it objectively and point out errors instead of saying 'oh look a bunch of halo 3 weapons'. There's no point posting anything here if you don't want anyone to point out anything bad in it.

how about using guides to get things centered and inline where they're supposed to be? Also, that doesn't look forerunner at all. Stop using those brushes, they're horrible.
