yeh.. i thought it'd be cool to make a train map as i havent seen any for Halo CE yet...
lol i know im a noob at textures so dont rip the shit outta me i just wanted to make a fun map. when its finished i am hoping to give it a custom biped to fit the scheme of the train and the actual maps decor and style is based upon the Timesplitters series and in fact the train was inspired by teh train level from Timesplitters Future Perfect.

for those who are worrying because it looks like a flaoting train:
There will be a custom sky.
Animated train wheels.
A front and back to the train. (drivers cabin/coal freight each with individual perks)
Scrolling texture floor to give impression of movement (this will take some work to look good... i was thinking of making hidden geometry below the scrolling texture surface as markers of where to put animated scenery of rocks and stuff collerating with the scroll texture.. but to make it look good will take alot of work.
Custom scenery will also be made to accomodate the genre.
Custom weapons will also accomodate the style, (old style double barrel shotty, vintage rifle, magnum, mb an smg that was in teh timesplitters game.but yeh feel free to give suggestions,
This map btw is just going to be a test for a trainstyle map and i will probably after release work on a V2.

You should have two trains side by side, one for each team, and have the bases on opposite ends. Make sure people can get on the roof too.

This is a very unique map idea - I don't think there's been one for Halo like this... ever. Maybe make it in the style of Human industrial architecture?
For moving terrain, I'd use a single massive piece of animated scenery. 2 "copies" of the terrain in a gbxmodel, each with its own node. This way, you can always have one full copy of the terrain moving by, while the others move back into position after a "cycle." I know this sounds confusing... I'll be back with an illustration. Also, make sure there's death upon touching the ground :v:
E : think of it like a conveyor belt or tank track, but with only 2 pieces.

yeh i need to add certain things before i add the front and back
Ladders to roofs, interior and exterior ladders.
Window planes
Doors
Vehicles (Train passenger seats - gives 25% more damage resistance, plus looks cool)

Yeh i think thats a good idea.. i sort fo get you but you would have to explain slightly better.
and with Death... i wanted it so when a player hits the scroll texture surface they die.... but so their body doesnt stay there and look stupid.. chain spawn an animated scenery of the biped flailing backwards.. and have teh death cam be facing to the back of the train to watch the scenery dissapear.. i dont knwo much about script but im sure i can work seomthing out.

No, I meant actually having two tracks with two separate trains, so it's like Jahrain's convoy map.

i was answering to the bases being either end.
but yeh i contemplated two trains.. could be something for V2.. but two trains travelling side by side.... didnt seem viable to me whilst i was designing it, plus it didnt stay true to the feel of the timesplitters map

Aww. that would be sweet con. Sort of like boarding action, but train themed. I like where this is going. It also reminds me of that map in h2 forgot its name, that has the conveyor belts and the crates the the belts and its has the double paths.

notice though that ive made the train bigger since the second render was taken as combat would be very short lived in the middle if it were that small.
there will also be explosive barrels in the middle with a hopefully cartoony feel explosion.
i was also thinking of making a bomb holding unit in the middle with a powerful weapon on top of it to create that 'rush' sensation of the game like experienced in Narrows when everyone usually runs or the rockets in the middle.

Or something like 1873 Winchester, to give it a Cowboy/Old West feel? Like this (http://www.rarewinchesters.com/gunroom/1873/M73-000017/01.JPG), but with this (http://www.historical-firearms.co.uk/acatalog/DX1253GClose.jpg). Latter not as important, but it would look fancy. :) Oh, and any other late 1800s weapons you can think of would work.
If you were to do the separate trains, make it so you have to hop from one train to the other, but you can only clear the jump on the opposite end from the enemy's flag. And if you miss the jump, you fall and die. If you can't make it so you jump, have a tele, but follow the same rules.
Also, map looks good so far, look forward to playing it.

Why not have beds on the walls like some trains did? Maybe a few could be out and have weapons on them and a few could just be up as eyecandy.

Here's some tips to make it work:
Judging by the style of the train and the theme of the map you're shooting for, make the trains run on elevated wooden rails, like what oldschool rollercoasters run on.
The rail geometry should be fairly simple. Make two planes that the support beam texture will go on double-sided planes, and the actual railway should be double-sided and non-collidable. The crevasse the rails are going over needs to be fairly deep. Make a fog plane right under the rails to mask the ground, and the ground should be either rock or sand. If you do the fog plane, make sure to make your sky have absolutely no atmospheric fog; I've noticed that when you have a fog plane and atmospheric fog, outlines of objects that are far away in the fog plane become visible in the color of the fog; fall down the hole in Damnation and look down; you should see your dead body.

oh and thanks Polar... i will need all of the wisdom i can get to get it lookin legitimately moving.
but i'll worry about that when the time comes, i gotta finish modelling everything first let alone populate the train and make sure the lights and everything are working nicely.
and yeh for the rails... i was just gonna have two elevated rail models and let the wooden track supports be on the scroll texture.

If you're going to do that, you might want more than just the collar to show team color. Like maybe a scarf or bracelets or something. Going to be tough to tell your team color in the middle of a fight that way.

ahh...very cool, glad to see something new. i think many people have thought of this before(including myself, especially after GOW train stuff...) but i remember working on a map that had 2 opposing ships, which is very similar if u make 2. my idea was to make it look like the train was moving with animated bitmaps on the ground...very easy and could give u the desired effect...mb.
anyways, cool idea. make sure you finish this.

ha something along those lines :P, but i wanted to do an epic grate bit at the front, would look awsome. Thing is i was looking at pictures of the Hogwarts Express for reference - lols, but im not sure if its in the right time scheme...
@ Scooby: Yeh i will definitely get this finished and the scroll texture was the only way i could thing to make it plausable.. its just all the other nitty gritties that are gonna polish it off that are gonna be hard. (fog+ atmospheric to make motion believable) :P

thought of... and would add to the humour alot. but its debatable atm.
i was thinking more of sticks of dynamite... and maybe a new type/style of grenade that no ones seen before... (innovation is the best thing about modding)
but yeh, will probably make a banana grenade for the public release of the first version.

Are you gonna be doing the head of the train? I guess you would call it the Engineers Station.....It was on the game...
Also, do closable doors work online? I remember it having passenger cabins and bathrooms...incorporate that somehow?
And it had an armory on one part...that mb?

If the map's supposed to be a track high in the air with atmospheric fog below it... he could just make the track not collide with bipeds and also put a killzone there, right?

Im not going for that entirely.. i got lazy skinning it so the interior sort of shares the same wooden pattern, still effective though, *will probs go over it before final release*.
also the layout is very different to the way the SP train map was layed out, obviously for team games and to follow the formulae of traditional map layouts for ideal gameplay. *i.e the rush for the uber weapon in the middle*
not sure about the slut biped.. sorta disturbs me thinking about all the little kids playing this game hooked to that make believe hentai bullshit. 'cartoon erotica'... i really dont want to feed that corruption..
Monkeys are mellow and funny. I was going to do permutations as Timesplitters future perfect has a ninja monkey, a cyborg monkey that resembles robocop and a zombie monkey... might include a master chief monkey * was presented in the new teaser released for Timesplitters 4* and i also though it'd be cool to see a predator monkey and a military styled monkey.
Can model permutations still have team colours?
but if you guys want the slut biped in there im happy to oblige.. hopefully i can make the slut biped model fit the harry tippers skeleton then there could be a permutation for V2 no?
good idea to have a heroine model though for the girl players out there.

Take note that if you create a custom model and don't use the cyborg/marine or the elite bone structure and animations, your model will take some serious effort.
E: Don't forget about scale, they have to be the same: ie, your model height has to match the bone structure, ect
And, the team colors thing happens to be set by the multipurpose bitmap, and has nothing to do with how many regions/permutations your model has.

yeh, im not 'that' lazy i just made the textures as placeholders so that i felt i could get on with the rest of the content... i will definitely go back over my textures.
