The rough diamonds of the filming industry. The topic dedicated to those great movies you've seen and probably you only, for whatever reason.

Movie: The way Home / Jibeuro (2002)
IMdB:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312841/
Description: A little boy gets dumped at his grandmother's by his mom for a while so the mother can look for a job. The boy is a spoiled brat, the grandmother is mute and old. The two clash, the boy hardly ever sympathizes with the grandmother, but near the end of the movie the boy finally breaks down in love for his grandmother. Great movie, it was hard to hold back some tears at the end.

Movie: Peaceful Warrior
IMdB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0438315/
Description: A good "food for thought" movie. Don't watch it if your attention span doesn't last longer than five seconds. Basically a gymnast struggles through college and trying to cope with what's real and what isn't (and if they are the same thing).

Movie: Equilibrium
IMdB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/
Description: There have only been two movies I have been able to watch three times in a row at one sitting. The first is Hot Fuzz and the second is this movie. It's like the few good parts of Fahrenheit 451, 1984, etc. all rolled into one movie and improved 100-fold. I know the generalized summaries of the movie might sound cliche and boring, but the execution of this movie is amazing. Perfect pacing, quality effects for a movie of this budget, good and consistent acting, amazing color style, great camera shots, and lots of death. I was also amazed to hear that there's not a single wire-stunt used in this entire movie. It's an utter shame it didn't make it real big in the states. It was soo successful overseas, but the producers didn't want to risk it not really being accepted over here and losing money.
The movie is set in a post-WWIII era where the powers that be have decided human emotion must be removed, so people wont feel the need to cause wars/etc. This is done by destroying art, literature, music, etc. and forcing people to take a drug that fully suppresses feeling. The movie follows a high-ranking law enforcer as he misses a dose of the drug.

Movie: Everything is Illuminated
Imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404030/
Description:
A young Jewish American flies to the Ukraine in search of his grandfather's past. He has a photograph and the name of a village. He hires the Odessa Heritage Tours, made up of a gruff old man and his English-speaking grandson. The three, plus grandfather's deranged dog, travel in an old car from Odessa into Ukraine's heart. Jonathan, the American, is a collector, putting things he finds into small plastic bags, so he will remember. Alex, the interpreter, is an archetypal wild and crazy guy. Alex asks the old man, "Was there anti-Semitism in the Ukraine before the war?" Will they find the village? The past illuminates everything. Either/or. Everyone should watch it - its like The Matrix (the first one, not the whole trilogy), but without all the surreality and incomprehensibility.

some [american] indie-productions i love include "the nines" and "man from earth". check it out you might just like them :)
and on a side note: i thought that "Equilibrium" had awesome action, but the plot was more or less horrible and kinda pointless. its better than the matrix sequels -plot and actionwise- but couldnt compete with the original. And even if they had improved on the story, they still would have left me screamin NEEDS MOAR GUNKATA FFS >:/

I mean death. I read some trivia saying there are 236 deaths in the movie and the protagonist is responsible for exactly half of them.

Remember Ong-Bak, the hit Thai movie that brought international attention to the Thai martial arts known as muay thai?
This one also features the two main actors in Ong-Bak (Tony Jaa and Petchthai Wongkamlao), but with different roles:

It's even directed by the guy who directed Ong-Bak.
I believe you men of the West also had this movie screened on your territory but with an alternate title, The Protector.
Awesome film, I liked it more than Ong-Bak. Bad marketing made it far less well-known than Ong-Bak.

The best part was when that guy swung the elephant around before tossing it out of a window.

Borrowed from the Vancouver Public Library. EXCELLENT, UNDERRATED movie. I can't believe the Americans could miss out on a local movie like that.
Arlington Road is chilling but also very truthful in its portrayal of counter-terrorism. Well worth watching.
