Fucking hell, cyclones are the like asian version of a hurricane/tornado right?

Pretty much, though I think they rotate in the opposite direction.

They're the exact same thing, the name hurricane is used in the north Atlantic. They do rotate differently in each hemisphere, though.

From what I remember they're also known as typoons around the Asian Pacific, they're known exclusively as cyclones here. You'd think everyone could just agree on the same name :|

They do agree, the terms are based on where the storm is, i.e., the media here calls the storm that hit Myanmar a cyclone, and I'm sure there's no mention of "Cyclone Katrina" in the Australian media.
Unless there was a Cyclone Katrina that I'm not aware of.

I know that, but I mean it's odd that they don't just use the same name since it's the same thing. I suppose it helps pin down the general location without going into detail, but still.

Oh shit, that's a lot of deaths for one storm. I feel really bad for those who have lost family and/or friends because of this.

For those of you who get the History Channel, tonight at 9 on Mega Disasters they're going to talk about Hypercanes, you know those things from The Day After Tomarrow? I'm pretty eager to hear about them.

This.
also a Tornado is something completely different, While having higher wind speeds and causing more destruction where they hit a tornado has a much lower area that it destroys.
never heard of a hypercane tho? If your into wild weather and the likes you should check out the super volcano's and exactly what they'll do when they erupt. Such as Yellowstone.
If a supervolcano goes off in my life time the entire world will be affected. like where talking if yellowstone erupts then i think about 90% of america will just be destroyed. (going from memory i saw it a LONG time ago on some doco they had.)
And to get back on topic, i'm rather confused as to how a level 3 cyclone has killed so many people. My geography class's failed me (all i learnt about was fucking boongs) so i dunno. Is this country very poor or something?

I agree with Bod's level 3 cyclone comment. I was watching the news, and I failed to see many bodies. Not to say that the government may be manipulating numbers to get aid money, but 20,000 people is a lot. I expected to see way more despair (As awful as that sounds).

Just to clear some stuff up:
1: Hypercane? yea wtf is that? Don't believe what the media tells you it's just a term that they made up to get attention and to try and scare the masses.
2: Typhoons are generally stronger than the hurricanes that happen in the gulf since they have to cross the Pacific ocean which is a larger body of water which gives it more time to build up.

Yes, it is, and the storm (which was a category 4) hit its largest city.

Heard it was Cat 3 on our air ways :/
meh.
Such a shame for so many people killed. When with enough money, and education 95% of all who perished could of been saved.
They had a voice clip from a shop keeper that lived in the city on the radio, he said that the Government played down how destructive the storm was going to be, which is exactly the same thing they did about the possibility of a tsunami after the massive earthquake that caused the boxing day tsunami.
And we all saw how well that worked out last time.
fucking idiots.

Meh i've heard the city of NY said the dust from the collapsed wtc buildings was relatively "safe" to breathe and therefore they reopened the wall street just a few days after 911.
----
the governement folks are probably just trying to keep their countries running as best as they can and avoid futile mass panic but im sure on the long run it will cause plenty of avoidable trouble.
but for now, the myanmarese (?) ppl will be busy trying to survive with the little they have left and lay off their revolutionary ambitions = their oppressive leaders secure their power.
If that makes for a good compensation of tiny penisses idk

Considering an MIT professor hypothesised it, I don't think its fake. Currently though its only a theory. it was hypothesized with mathematical models and digital imaging. Currently its one of many theories that helped kill the dinosaurs. Just read the article.
2: Typhoons are generally stronger than the hurricanes that happen in the gulf since they have to cross the Pacific ocean which is a larger body of water which gives it more time to build up.
Typhoons and Hurricanes are all and the same thing, typhoons just spin in a different direction. Hurricanes and Typhoons are powered by warm water. Just because they're over water doesn't mean they'll be strong, they need water temperatures AT LEAST 80 degrees farenheit. A Hurricane can be over a small portion of ocean yet be very hot and its power would increase twice that of a hurricane that traveled over large portions of ocean when the temperature was moderate. Please do research before posting.

No, they don't. Typhoons are located in the northern Pacific, hurricanes in the northern Atlantic. They both spin counter-clockwise. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/CN3089/Emoticons/emot-science.gif

which makes it a pretty shitty Tornado lol.
ok if you want to know what a willy willy is then pay attention. You know how every now and then you'll see leaves on the ground moving in a circle and occasionally getting thrown a few meters into the air?
willy willy.
