teh_lag was talking to me about a similar problem, he said he believes it has to do with the mirror modifier iirc. I'd definitely talk to him about it.

Try resetting X-form on your object in max.

Wow, thanks. Turns out the parts of the models that I had mirrored were the parts that were messed up. All better now.
