Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a carving template? Obviously making the image black and white works, but how do you preserve the details and all that?
Details will be preserved where they fall on the other side of the posterizing threshold from their surroundings.
You can use posterize @ 2, which is the same as doing threshold @ 128, which is further like adjusting the levels around 128. You might want to use some filters or editing to bring out important details from the shadows, because you're likely to lose them when you go down to just 2 tones in your image. High pass, exposure, and curves can help with this a bit.
On the other hand, if you plan on carving just the skin off the pumpkin then a deeper cut will be brighter. In this case, you might was to posterize to 3 levels.
edit: before you go desaturating your source image, take a look at this tutorial to get the best results.
