NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
well were working on a new map, based off of Mario Karts Pipe Plaza. So far though, our other modeler hasnt given me any pics of the map so far. so i decided to start working on a mario kart kart as a vehicle.
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/c...bo/kartwip.jpg
still needs work on the hull. and textures.

IAWTP.
Also, look at the Mario Kart's vehicles and really try again. The model is completely wrong related to any mario kart games, it's really just a box with wheels and mirrored cylinders...

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
I see alot of potential in this Cylinder and cone vehicle, keep up the great work!

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
If Lightning ever gets around to it, we sorta had one in the "Nintendo Mapping Project" .. full course, looked good too. Karts aren't practical but maybe Kirby should script a way around that.

Well, let's see. Mario Kart is all about having a race, amirite? So try forcing 16 players (if you could even get that many in a Halo CE match) into vehicles and expect them to drive around a track without falling off. Teleporters, you say? Good luck trying to cover the entire map with Tiamats vehicle teleporters. Also, what if someone drops? Someone joins in? It's not going to make up for that, they automatically lose.
So yeah, karts aren't practical.

They are practical, your just thinking too much. ;)

This.
Besides, racing maps have been done before, people did actually get in the vehicles and race when I played, and it was fun.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Well, the concept of this is good, but many things can go wrong. First of all, the kart itself isn't the greatest model, work a bit more on that. Secondly, Mario kart has weapons, right? And you go over floating blocks, and those give you a random weapon to use. It might be a little hard to do that. And finally, what about those boost pad things that make you go faster when you go on them for a small period of time? How will you get those to work?
I really hope to see this done, so keep up the good work.

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Jesus H. Christ, people. You ever wonder why people rarely released anything in our forums as CE grew older? This is a prime example.
If people here actually helped someone to get their project in game and then help them improve upon it, I think my head would explode.

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Zeph, Zeph, Zeph, don't you know? Cold, harsh truth flung in the face of noobs is what made this community what it is today. We've been over this before- if they can't handle the truth without 5 metric tons of sugarcoating, then good riddance.
@Advancebo: the model is crap. Start over.
If you really must have some sugarcoating, know that everyone here made shitty models at some point or another.
e: in fact, most of my current models are shit, which is why I haven't posted any since the dark ages of H2V. :P
ee: and anyway, there are plenty of tutorials out there for people who care enough to help themselves instead of requiring someone to hold their hand. I'm not saying Advancebo needs someone to hold his hand, but that you can't expect us to drop what we're doing and "help someone to get their project in game and then help them improve upon it" when most of us are self-taught. Help will only be given where help is deserved, and most of us are extremely busy.

Well, That wasnt a really big problem for me and malolo.

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Zeph is exactly right.
There is a point where Advancebo should be told that the model sucks, however, apparently I'm the only one who noticed that the first post is the only one he's made in this thread.
He didn't even say for certain that this was a racing map, it was only assumed. noone even asked him.
Then everyone just went on about how good or bad the idea you assumed he had was.
There is a difference between a proper critique and just being a jackass.
A fair middle ground would be to say that the model sucks and provide a link to a google search of modeling tutorials. And he didn't even ask for tutorials, he didn't even ask for help.
Yes, most of the members here don't have to time to personaly walk someone through doing this but apparently they do have time to analyze and pick apart every little thing that is wrong with the game concept that he might have had.
This comunity is defined by a large amount of effort put forth to degrade and discourage anyone who is in any way less skilled or knowlegeable than yourself.
We are not a comunity, we are a gang, watching and waiting for anyone weaker than us to unwittingly wander into our territory so we can beat the shit out of them.

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Not to mention Pipe Plaza in Mario Kart is a battle map, not a racing track.

That's exactly fucking right. So, instead of providing him with the tuts he didn't ask for (even though we still recommended it) we told him (in a decently not-mean way) that his model sucks. Aside from monopoly, nothing was wrong with those posts, and the only other thing is the debate about whether it'd be practical or not. Since he gave no real details, I think it would, in fact, be safe to assume that they are making a racing map. So the members took it upon themselves to discuss the idea. What's the problem in that? Forums are about discussion.
Honestly, what was wrong with the crit on the model? We told the truth. Last I knew, the truth was not considered unconstructive, or inflammatory. Maybe that's changed. If it has, someone please say so. That way, the next time I decide to tell the truth, I'll think twice. Then I won't get into more trouble for it. >: |
As for the OP. Could you show us any more pictures? Even if you aren't that great of a modeler, someone on your team could be. I'm interested in seeing some of their work.

EXTRUDES and crap. Basic, but looks like a good design. Can you point me to a rendering tutorial to render models like that?

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Kart race/battle sounds like great idea, just force the players into vehicles w/ a script and everything would be fine.
Some of those places on the level look like they'd be hard to drive on without falling.

KISS principle. That's all I have to say.
Plus I'm sure you could find a way to make this whole little project work, its not the most difficult thing the community has every tried to do.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Yes, I was only saying it is basic. I dont think a N64 map should be ported over to halo and have 10k+ polys.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
I agree. I honestly think that it should be as low poly as the rest of the mariokart universe.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
this thread is :fail:
e: not that it started out that way. but it has degraded to complete fail.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
And your helping :haw:
The thread isn't fail -- It just needs a revitalization.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Am I the only one that thought this thread was about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but got the whole abbreviation completely messed up?
Race maps are definitely fun. The Halo HQ, Yoyorast Island, that freaking Yoshi map that lightning never released yet >_< all GREAT racing maps. So dont talk crap by saying oh racing maps never work blahblah there are ways around it.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Halo HQ was a piece of shit. I can think of plenty of better maps for race that weren't even designed for it.
-
Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
Design looks alright, still needs some fix-ups in extruded areas. I think the ramp coming out of the side of both back bases is a bit too steep, thick and narrow.

It was pretty good for being one of the first-ish maps released. One of my old favs.

Re: NGMT project: Mario Karts Pipe Plaza
that map pic i posted was nothing to do with this certain project, u guys asked for one of our other members work, and i did. we were doing a pokemon map before, but were still working on ideas for that. so we started this project.
