Actually the response to the RROD issue hurt their public image further.

Sony's method of dealing with PS2 failures was to not support the problem and in fact change the accessories so you also needed to be replacements for those since they wouldn't plug in the later iterations of the PS2. Things like Vertical stand, Network Adapter, Multitap, etc.

And yet people come into my store complaining more of the Xbox360 than the PS2.

Yes I do, because they wont ever port Live over to XP.
