will it run halo 2?
Why did you buy that card? You said you have a laptop with an intel GMA 950 in it. You can't upgrade that to the 5500 you just bought, because that's for a desktop computer.

If you want to upgrade a laptops video card it must have a PCI-EX slot with MXM or MXMII (or even III or IV). If you want to run halo 2 on a laptop you will need at least a geforce 7 series or anything similar from ati to get decent framerates. My lappy runs it maxed out with 2 times AA on, but I have an geforce 8 series.

Also, don't run your computer at such a resolution.

who says he doesn't have a desktop computer even though he's using a laptop? Many people own both a laptop and a desktop. And just FYI, the Geforce 5500 was for AGP. He obviously owns an old desktop with an AGP slot, and it's probably less powerful than his laptop in terms of CPU, etc which is why his laptop is his primary gaming machine.

Also the MXM thing is better interpreted as having the graphics card be replaceable rather than actually upgradeable. In theory, you can take out an MXM laptop card and slap in another one, but each MXM size is not compatible with slots for a different size (i.e. Type 3 can't go into Type 2 and vice versa). Choices are extremely limited as a result of this size thing. I could take out my laptop's Geforce Go 6600 and stick in a 7600 (should work, just need drivers) but it's not worth the hassle. PGA, don't worry about this part, as it's irrelevant for your laptop.

25 pounds (I use an American keyboard lol so there's no pound sign)...that's $51 USD...which could've gotten you something a bit for powerful but I don't know how things go in the U.K. - how much do video cards typically cost there?

Re: Initialization Failed Error

Yes i do also own a less powerful desktop machine.
That im thinking of upgrading myself with new parts.
Or i may buy a new DELL with a 256MB Graphics card for £600 odd.

Graphics cards are around £10-£30 for older Nvidia ones.

With upto the top end:
MSI GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI,
Costing at least £420 alone.

It depends really.
My old desktop only as DDR ram not DDR2 or DDR3.
So i dont really know whats the best i can go for.

Buying a bigger power supply wouldnt be an issue.

Thanks guys.

Cool Re: Initialization Failed Error

Does anyone know from the specs that i've given,
If the new Asus XG Station, released next year, will work with my laptop.

I have a SONY VAIO VGN-N11H/W:

Because that means, by the sounds of what that Asus thing does,
I can play high-end games on a laptop.
Correct?

Then you'll find out why people want laptops.

And yes, the Asus XG Station can connect to a laptop (must have ExpressCard 54 - so it won't work with Macbooks which only have ExpressCard 34). It is an enclosure that lets you connect 16x PCI-express video cards to a laptop to enhance graphics power. However, it's not worth it. First of all, its architecture prevents it from displaying the enhanced image on the internal laptop screen - you must hook up an external monitor. Second of all, ExpressCard transfer rate is so slow that this device is the equivalent of taking your nice 16x PCI-express video card and sticking it in a 1x-speed slot. Still faster than integrated shit, but still underpowered. You will actually be able to run games, but there is a poor performance-vs-price factor. It's far more worth it to just get another laptop with a real internal video card (like mine).

MSI has a similar product called the Luxium. Few details have been released. Neither product has gone retail, but I'd recommend against them.
