do they have to be made in hammer?
yup. I think you can split your level up in max into separate pieces and make the level into scenery like you would with unreal though
It relies pretty heavily on entities placed and assigned in Hammer, so I doubt that's something you could do in 3ds max. And even if you could import bare-bone geometry, I doubt Hammer would play nicely with plane-based levels.
yah and it sucks, i wish you could make them in 3ds
I've watched some videos on Hammer, and all it looks like is making boxes and modifying them :\
