    MW2 Dedicated Servers

    http://teknogods.com/

    Or more specifically

    http://teknogods.com/?p=329
    and
    http://teknogods.com/?p=376

Looks like those who want dedicated servers don't have too much to complain about anymore. What would really be awesome now is if some intelligent hackers would start analyzing MW2's map structure so perhaps custom maps could be created...

E: Well actually they probably still have some things to complain about, but you guys know what I mean. :v

I like what they did with the player limit for WaW co-op. 8 players FTW.

I'll do this as long as I can keep my account. I've almost mastered all 5 SMG's. Just need a few more camos.

I think this is going to be completely independent. It can't rely on steam or IWnet at all, because they would detect it as a game modification. You'll likely need to run an exe which will copy the installed steam files to another directory and then patch the files to work with their server browser. However, even though you might not be able to have any of your fancy stuff, maybe it will be unlocked by default?

I just hope these guys are thinking enough about banning. Without Steam or IWnet to be of any use (not like they were any help originally), they won't have any way to ban cheaters. The easiest way would be by username, but we already know that is too easy to circumvent and it doesn't even work with IW's issued bans. They should start a new service that would issue unique serials to people, which they would need to register with the server browser. The server browser can send the key to request the server list, similar to a password, and the key can also be crossed with the IP of a joining player to a server for authentication there as well. This way, they could even potentially charge like $5 for a key to use their service (notice how that is NOT selling the product!).

Even if they did that they would get sued for something. That's lawsuit bait right there.

They can protect from that by creating an LLC that has no affiliation with the hacked MW2 files. They can just provide the server browser with a service tied to it.

Then SOMEONE could release the source code to the MW2 crack so it's in the wild and there could be tons of generic ones. There would have to be one thing in the MW2 crack that would allow for room for interaction with another app.

That other app would be their client listener app. This would be closed source and 100% custom code. It would accept join requests, authenticate them, and then pass them off to the cracked MW2 game.

Following this method should completely protect them.

Or possibly just have the application generate a random key and save the key in registry and in the application. So if someone tries to change the key it will know and remove there account and blah blah blah.

There are probably simpler ways of doing this.

Then you wouldn't be able to perform a CRC on the app and you'd still be able to just request or generate another key, and the key might not even be unique at that. Also, having the service issue the key would give them power to ban it from the entire network.

Also, there HAS to be some backend to this regardless. The server browser needs to request the list from a master server.
