I need you guys to settle a dispute for me...

My best friend (let's call her "Ruth") and I are no longer on speaking terms, and she says it's all my fault.
Essentially, here's the facts:

• About a week ago, I made a lighthearted comment, asking her what color her crotch hair was (she's a redhead). I didn't mean anything by it.
• She immediately took offense and punched me in the arm, which prompted a quick apology from myself.
• She refused to talk to me for the rest of the day (despite me apologizing three more times).
• The next day, she still wasn't talking to me. I decided to let her go and calm down, so I leave her alone for the weekend.
• Today, my other best friend (let's call her "Holly") comes up to talk to me. Apparently, at Ruth's birthday party, Ruth came up to Holly and told her she shouldn't hang out with me anymore. Holly tried to make amends and get Ruth to see that she was being irrational, but Ruth just ignored her.
• This prompted a... somewhat violent reaction from me, and I yelled at Ruth for trying to get my best friends to leave me. I give Ruth a shove at the end because she isn't listening to anything I'm saying. The shove isn't hard enough to hurt her, but I hoped that it would knock some sense into her and make her see that she's being irrational.
• Ruth complains to all her friends that I have done some great wrong to her, about half of whom now want to beat the living shit out of me. Ruth is still ignoring me, and has blocked any attempts by myself to bring about negotiations or any kind of reconciliation.
• She has also stopped listening to Holly or any of her other real-world friends, all of whom have taken my side on the matter. She insists that I have done something majorly fucked-up and should do something about it to appease her, although she neglects to tell me what it is I should do about it.

I brought this up here to get your guys' opinion on this and maybe knock some sense into her. Any advice would help as well.

You're not in the right, nor is she. It sounds a bit like some insecurities/immaturities on her part as well as yours. At this point, don't take it to heart. There's really nothing you can do here but let go; if she keeps an unending grudge she's only proving your point for you.

Though despite that, it seems you did say something somewhat unacceptable, but if you were truly sorry and showed that, she should not have continued such an extreme reaction... on top of that, Ruth's action of going to each and every friend of hers and making you look bad was kind of a douche move. :/

TL;DR: I'm starting to think that at first you did do something a bit out of line, but she's blown it all out of proportion and turned it into something else. Her actions and your actions have put you both out of the right. I kind of wish I can unvote now, because both of you are out of the right to an extent... although her actions appear to be much more malicious than yours. So I'd say you're a bit closer.

You obviously want someone who you can be yourself around. You tried that and her reaction was IMO immature and irrational. If she doesn't like your sense of humour, and your wishes to speak freely in general, then I think that's a clear indication that she wasn't right for you in the first place. Yeah, just drop her like a bad habit, because at this point, she is. She wants to milk your reactions for all they're worth at this point, and so far has been successful at it. The best thing you can do now is to avoid her at all costs. Just ignore her and her goon squad, and if things get really serious and she won't leave you alone, file a restraining order. She wants material she can use as ammo in the shit-flinging, and you'd de doing yourself a favor by doing nothing, as ANYTHING is ammo at this point.

I'm going to be blunt with this.
If your friends can believe something from such a one sided perspective and decide that they don't want to talk to you then their probably not people worth having around.
Real friends would know you a lot better than to take just one perspective and only see that as the truth.
The moment a friend makes you choose them over someone else they no longer become a friend in my opinion.

I can't vote because you broke one of the cardinal rules of dealing with women: never get dragged into the emotional chaos, especially by doing something irrational (like pushing her). That was really dumb and you should have left it at "wtf".

chances are it has nothing to do with your comment and something else entirely that just made what you said the straw that broke the camel's back. Maybe she had a hard time shaving that morning or read something unfunny (funny) about gingers or maybe she was just thinking how nice of a person you are and then you say something like that or maybe she was already mad at you. Either way I don't think you did anything wrong and on another day she probably would have laughed about it.

At any rate you have three choices:

Apologize and then act like nothing happened until she's over it.
Act like nothing happened and apologize when she's over it.
Ignore her forever.

*notice the first two differ in order based on when you're on speaking terms.

I'd also like to point out you can never have two female best friends. Two girls get along fine. Three do not. You are one of the girls. That makes three. That's one too many. There are no Three Female Musketeers. When it comes to girls two is company, three is always a crowd. One will always get shunned, picked on, or treated badly enough to make her leave reducing the number to two. They are like oxygen atoms. That is why "Ruth" is trying to take out "Holly". She's in the wrong for overreacting while you're in the wrong for the pushing. I can understand you were upset and all but unless she was physically harming you, that was just wrong. This kind of reminds me of a time where me and friend were throwing medicine balls at each other while waiting for a gym class to start and I accidentally threw one to her face. If she is unwilling to reason with you or any of her friends, it seems as if she wasn't really your friend to begin with.

Well there's your problem. You didn't give any real context about your relationship or social group (is this kind of joke common? do you guys have a lot of sexual humor?) so it's kindof a gut feeling here but unless you were somehow on the subject of peoples' nether regions or their hair color, I think it's perfectly understandable for her to be put off a fair amount. I assume these are two different sets of friends? You're really not explaining your group dynamics to us. It's really not easy to "settle a dispute" without knowing the context or if there are these kinds of bizarre apparent contradictions.

Pretty much what Lag said, it depends what kind of relationship you have with each other, if your real close and open about alot of things she may have taken it differently, but she sounds like shes pretty closed off about intimate things.

Has she overreacted? Yeah, okay it was rude that you asked her (unless like I said, you have that sexual humor banter going on) but the fact shes still pissed after a week, and now getting your friends to go against you, thats pretty fucked up and low.

Personally I wouldnt try and patch up with Ruth, she seems a total bitch. You've said your sorry, and I'd apologise again to Ruth and said you had no right to shout at her and shove her. If Ruth doesnt forgive you, well its her lose.

Maybe shes just being real stubborn for a different reason and your taking all the flack for that.

As a redhead, I can tell you that people ask. She's a girl, I'm sure people ask her more than they ask me. If she's sensitive it could get overwhelming. If she's sensitive and a friend asks her, someone she didn't expect to objectify her in such a way, it could get really overwhelming.

I'm going to give you a slap on the wrist and assign you five hours of community service for giving her a black eye."


So she pulls some more bullshit, giving herself a black eye (somehow) and blaming it on me. Apparently, within that 5 page (technically 10, since it was double-sided) report, she also came up with a bunch of other bullshit which she said I had been doing, even though I hadn't done any of the things she mentioned. To the contrary, she had actually done the majority of them to me, although since she's buddy-buddy with the principal, he took her side rather than mine. He refused to allow me to prove Ruth was making up bullshit by bringing in Holly or my other friend Dawn, both of whom watched most of this thing unfold.

I get home today to this lovely IM from a friend of hers, a wannabe Marine who lives in Utah, 1,000 miles away:

You need a friend you can hang out with 24/7 (but not really) as a witness, you're pretty fucked right now. Don't sit alone anywhere, at lunch, in the library, etc because if she's as psycho as you're letting on, she'll most likely stalk you and get near you so she can yet again victimize herself and screw you over yet more. Ignore her. Do not even acknowledge her existence past her location, so you can avoid her. If she tries antagonizing you, she does not exist, continue on with whatever you're doing.

I would suggest trying to get a friend of hers to vouch for you, or get some kind of evidence that she's lying (e.g. tape recording), but with my luck (I tend to be the epitome of Murphy's Law) this would backfire and end up screwing you over yet more, so do so at your own risk and know what you could possibly get yourself into. If in doubt, ignore this part and just go with ignoring her.

No lie, you need to get a lawyer involved. A principal isn't legally allowed to silence you, even if it involves another student. You might go down for a harassment charge, but god damn, if you're not careful this thing could spiral out of control fast, and things could get a lot worse. Make sure you get written statements from your two friends about what happened, and seeing as how you're from California, I must ask if your school has cameras. If they do, they're obligated to retain the footage for a certain amount of time. You're a fucking idiot for even making the joke, and then touching her, but she's obviously mentally unstable. If this gets any worse, insist on a psychiatric evaluation for her.

i really hate to say it but after reading the whole part with the principle, i was thinking this too. this whole story just seems a bit TOO ridiculous.

if its really getting this out of hand, get a lawyer and press charges. if anything at this point, YOU are being harassed. i mean seriously, a principle who automatically blames you without hearing your story, IN LIGHT OF your own black eye? this is fucking ridiculous. tell your parents how fucked up this is, and get a lawyer. thats all i can say at this point

I was sitting with another friend of mine at lunch today (let's call her "Ashley"), when Ruth walked up to me (yes, she did have a black eye). She started talking shit, trying to set me off so I would do something stupid. I didn't have a chance to react, because Ashley got very... vocal, very quickly. The two cussed each other out for a few moments before Ruth ran off towards the principal's office. Ashley didn't lay a finger on Ruth, but I'm afraid that Ruth might stretch the truth a bit to get Ashley in trouble.
I don't want to get Ashley to get dragged into this mess as well, but I haven't seen her since. It was just Ashley and I at the time, so there were no other witnesses. I didn't see Ashley after school like I normally do, so I'm seriously concerned that she got suspended, although she may have just been tied up with something.
If Ashley does get caught up in this web, what should I do? I'm not sure the principal would believe my testimony, as he still thinks Ruth is still a perfect little angel. Any advice?
