So after a forum search, I noticed there was no thread for this movie other than the one from July.

Who here has seen it? What are your opinions? Was Daft Punk awesome or were they awesome? Discuss. Remember, if you have a spoiler, put it in tags.

I personally thought the movie was awesome. Sure, the story was kind of thin, but what they did have was executed it very well. Much better film than Avatar was, in my opinion, though it won't get the same critical acclaim. Would go see it again...actually, I am going to see it again. :D

Need to go see it still, been trying to go with some friends but they're all badkid scrubs who're busy with family and holiday shit.

Was going to see it at IMAX with some friends, but they became reluctant because they fell victim to rotten tomatoes score at the time D:

Was a decent movie. Nice effects, actions and such. But story? Meh :/. Kinda unique, but to me, meh.

I've learned that Rotten Tomatoes is a horrible site to use to judge a movie. Most of the critics are just full of themselves. Funny enough, Ebert is the only one I'd pay any attention to. His reviews generally seem fair to me.

I like it about as much as I like the original. Good movies, better graphics than story.

Legacy does bug me a bit, but that's because I played Tron 2.0 before watching it, and was kinda expecting the same level of plot/computer function integration, which 2.0 did very well.

(also, the OS leak part near the beginning was hilarious, the actor playing Sam did a good job, I thought)

Yeah, that bugged me a bit too. You would never think that the individuals inside the Grid were programs. They didn't do anything that output something to the real world, there were no I/O towers, etc. The movie kind of forgot that the Grid is a computer, not just another world.

needed more master control program

Saw it, loved it, but like most people said the story wasn't terribly great. However, even though it wasn't great, the art was beautiful. The action was also pretty awesome too, and the movie was such an improvement from the first movie obviously.

I'll admit, I never got around to seeing the original. I went to this with a totally open mind, and I thought it was pretty darned awesome. Story might not have been the best ever, but I didn't have any issues with it. And the movie itself was gorgeous. Loved the art style, and the designs of everything were awesome. Plus Daft Punk still rules- the soundtrack was extremely cool.

I like how some people thought Hans Zimmer wrote some of the music. He wrote zilch for this movie.


After seeing it a second time, I also think I've figured out why the computer metaphor went out the window: the Grid was designed as a place for programs to live, not really as a system to perform a task in the real world.

What was nice was they didn't try to force some bullshit technical explanation on us. The original didn't and it did just fine without it. Legacy is the same. Those details aren't necessary.

I also appreciate them not forcing a romance story down our throats. You catch a spark between them, but it doesn't go any further than that on-screen.

I'd agree with your criticism of Quorra being able to materialize, but then again, she is an ISO- maybe since they're naturally created lifeforms, they have some special ability? I know, grasping for straws, but it's something.

Edit: Of course, they're all concerned about CLU being able to get through, so idk. Flynn's disk is just that badass :P

By definition, getting into the Grid is having yourself turned into data. It is logical that data can therefore be given a physical form in this world using that same information; think of it as an auto-mobile storage unit. I don't have any problem with Quorra being materialised, as long as she doesn't manifest super powers in this world. I also think that ISO tattoo should still be present on her arm if it isn't.

Eh, I think of the bleeding like a piece of marker code that classifies a program as genuine or not. In this case, it marks him as a user as opposed to a program or an ISO.

Saw it, loved it. I don't really go into sci-fi movies expecting really good story, but this one left a few too many questions unanswered. The ISO was suppose to change the world, but the explanation never got past saying Flynn's research would revolutionize the world. I'd like a bit more info on that.

This movie pace is really nice, and the visuals are spectacular. Clu looks almost real, but it still have that hint of cgi in him.

I love the scene in zuse's bar, that may be my favorite scene in the movie (there were more epic battles in the movie, but that scene just stuck with me).

That seems to be most people's favourite scene. Personally, I like the scene where he gets picked up by the Recognizer and the lightcycles.

The Gunship and Flyer sequence had to be my favorite. In all seriousness, I fell in love with that Gunship/Bomber the moment I saw it.

I just saw this movie and like most of you I loved it as well. It was one of those movie where I walked out of it completely satisfied without asking myself any questions. Just like Con said earlier, it was great that they didn't put in a shitload of bad explanations trying to make the movie seem more realistic cause it lets you just sit back and enjoy it a lot more.

They are already working on the next Tron, which will be the first in a trilogy.

Anyone here play Tron: Evolutions? I'm interested. Some have said it's fun while the magazines say it's crap.

It's gonna be a trilogy? Damn...that kinda sucks...let's just hope they figure out something good and don't screw it up.

At least three more movies? I hope this doesn't run the same path that Resident Evil has :|

Saw it in IMAX 3D the other day. I was kind of skeptical at the steep price I was paying for admissions, but I walked out completely satisfied. Did not know that there would be sequels, which I guess is good since I was curious as to the fate of Encom,

and also if Tron lived or not. His lights did turn back on to blue as he was sinking, but my friends argued that the entire grid kind of imploded on itself. I guess that's not a valid argument now that there's more movies coming.

Turned white, actually. Generally speaking, programs are blue and green, users and special programs like Tron and Zuse are white, and corrupt programs are warm colours like red and orange. Semantics, but there is a point to all the colours. But yeah, I agree that the Grid didn't implode. And Flynn probably isn't dead, either. I just hope Boxleitner gets more spotlight in the next movie because I grew up watching his performance in Babylon 5 as well as the original Tron.

@Warsaw: You have glasses? I had the same problem.. My brain shut off my left eye cause everything was so blurry, but glasses really helped.

I do. My left eye is 20/20 and my right eye is 20/200. After glasses, left eye is the same but right eye is 20/40. Can't get it any better. It's a problem with the nerve, not the eye.

My glasses work fine with the 3D glasses over top, though if your prescription can't compensate you to 20/20 in each eye I suppose the 3D effect wouldn't work.

It's impossible for me to ever get 20/20 vision (49/16, lazy eye as a kid, fucked my eye muscles up.), but I can still watch Imax 3d movies with my glasses on below.

20/15 bitches....

Also, nobody has anything else to say on the movie. All I can say is I wish I had had $100,000 to spend on one of the five street-legal lightcycles that were auctioned off. I'd shell that much out to drive one around on a nightly basis.

Watched in 1080p Bluray glory just now and noticed that they cut in and out of letterbox... Was it like this in the theatrical version as well? I never noticed until watching it at home, here's some direct sceen grabs so you can see what I mean:

Does that for a few parts of the movie, and I never noticed it in theaters. It took me until half-way through watching it here to notice it was switching as well. At first I was like "aw this is letterboxed, am sad". Then at one point I was like, "oh hey it's fullscreen, wasn't it letterboxed? Nah I must be crazy"...

Maybe because some of the renders were higher quality and they added them to the BluRay?

They did that for Batman: The Dark Knight bluray too.

35mm film is natively 4K, and effects are never rendered at under 2K at the smallest. Parts of The Dark Knight were IMAX, so they had a taller aspect ratio to work with than the normal film, which was shot wider than the IMAX. My guess is that Tron Legacy had a similar setup- perhaps the 3d cameras were higher than 35mm? I know the 3d was only while inside the Tron world- perhaps the film they used for those cases happened to have a different aspect ratio, so they decided they might as well use all of it.

35mm film doesn't have a digital resolution to compare it to, you can theoretically digitally scan 35mm film all the way down to the crystalline structure of the film before there's any resolution limit. From what I've heard when 35mm film is scanned they do it at around 5k resolution and work from there since it's more than enough for any current format. RED cameras shoot at 4k - 5k natively straight to a proprietary RED digital format that doesn't take up a shit ton of digital storage. These cameras are the future of cinema, they also cost a lot less to run than 35mm cinema cameras in both initial and running costs.

Anyway, it makes sense that they used the higher quality stuff since they had it. But I don't see why the whole thing wasn't just cropped to 19:9 for the Bluray. I mean, I can almost guarantee that every shot they did had the required vertical resolution. Unless they got lazy doing the digital effects and never rendered the vertical resolution they needed...

Interestingly enough though, I'd say that switching back and forth worked well for TRON. Gave a few scenes a more "crisp" feel when in letterbox.

True, but 4K is the typical theatrical display analogue, so I used that as a general number example. As for why they don't just crop the entire thing, I have no idea. They technically could have done the same thing for The Dark Knight, but chose to keep the letterboxing for most of the film. My guess is that it comes down to the cinematographer. If he/she wants a 2.85:1 ratio, then the bluray will probably stay that way. With Tron it was probably an artistic choice during the blu ray manufacturing process. Either that or somebody is randomly hitting buttons and seeing how it looks.

Hmm pretty weird, like someone mentioned they did that with Dark Knight because the opening sequence (the bank robbery bit) was shot in IMAX.

Tron is a fantastic film though,cracking soundtrack by Daft Punk too.

There's letter boxing because if you crop it to 16:9, you cut out some of the picture. I don't know about you, but I would rather have the letterboxed 21:9 than have it cropped to 16:9.

Oh, true- for some reason I didn't think about that. >_< And the visual effects would have been rendered in that picture ratio anyway, so it would be impossible to display a fullscreen image without the effects just stopping where the black bars are currently. This leads me to believe that Tron's blu ray picture changes are a direct result of the 3D cameras, artistic choices, or both. I never saw Tron in IMAX- did it actually display in large-scale for the 3D? If not, this may be something visible only on the dvd/blu ray transfers.

I saw it in 2D three times and in 3D once...but the 3D didn't do shit for me because I wasn't sitting close enough for my right eye to pick it up.

E: I can't wait for that Panasonic 21:9 HD+ TV to come to the US. Then we can truly enjoy our movies without letter-boxing.

It won't. It's a niche thing. But unlike 16:9 vs. 16:10, you are not stepping down in pixel count by switching to 21:9. Same number of vertical pixels, larger number of horizontal. 16:10 has more vertical, same horizontal as 16:9.

Yeah, but the physical size of the television at 21:9 is just silly. And that's why it'll never catch on, people like their televisions at the current wide-screen 16:9 dimensions, anything with an even more exaggerated rectangular shape and it'll be almost to wonky for most current rooms/decor.

I could see 21:9 projectors becoming a standard though, for people with truly high-end home theater rooms.

16:10 is the ideal resolution for monitors, 16:9 is good for TV/Movie media. Except 16:10 does both with no issue so it's the best.

Well, duh. I would never get a monitor in anything less. I've never seen a 16:10 TV though. And no, a Dell Ultrasharp 30" with 2560x1600 does not count as a TV.

Jesus Christ. I just finished watching the movie. God damn, I'll never get to see this movie in 3D D: Home Theatre 3D Blu-Ray probably won't compare and I don't even have access to that either. I guess I'll just buy the edition that includes the 3D Disc, the Regular Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital copy. It's around $35 and it never hurts to be prepared for 3D tech.

What's wrong with 3D? It looks good enough. It did sort of degrade the picture quality of Avatar when I saw it in theatre, but that may have been due to the type of projector they were using. Avatar was also the only 3D film I've seen with the Real3D system, so I don't know if it was just the Movie or the projector. I'm guessing the projector.

Meh. I've only seen 2 films in 3D. One was 10 years ago, the other was Toy Story 3
