PHX props. Also, PHX bombs with thrusters attached. Also, no.

Reloading was a tedious and risky process where the slightest slip could blow the living shit out of everything within several metres

Phx, a great addon for GMod. There's a lot of geometric shapes in it as well as wheels, explosives, etc.
There's also a new addon that works just as well as PhX called the Tiled Props Pack. You might want to check them both out.

Basically, all you need is a barrel, a base and a way to force the prop out.
I use a Wire forcer to push the prop, and a wire explosive with no dmg for the sound/effects.

Learn to use the prop spawner.

The prop spawner was a) limited to 1 on the server and b) didn't work very well offline.

Plus, it'd turn it into a mingelwerfer.

yes, and by "basics", I don't mean how to use the psygun or the weld tool or that crap, I mean how to make "cool contraptions" and take them a step or 3 further.

As you said, most of that stuff is coverd really well at trickystutorials.com.
