D9 had a more original story, but I hated the main character for all my soul.

    Avatar was better.

D9 and Avatar were done by the same effects company at the same time. I would propose that D9 looks more "realistic" because the color palette is less colorful, and therefore more "realistic" compared to the human/normal stuff. Avatar has a photorealistic, yet surreal look to it. I know that's a little oxymoronic, but that's the best way I can describe it.

It is after all quite obvious that they just sent a film crew there and filmed all of this!

Actually, the effects in Return of the King were decidedly bad for a movie of its caliber. Gollum was good, but a lot of the other stuff just struck me as "woah, there's some shady CGI" instead of "holy shit it's going to melt my face!"

    Re: James Cameron's AVATAR

fucking gorgeous environments. my eyes were popping out of my head the whole time. the story is a bit cliche and the message too, but that said it's a message which is seemingly ignored at every turn so i guess that's not too much of a problem. the character design pissed me off. they made the n'avi look like something right out of a furry's deviantart page; rather than go with more creative or sensible designs, they basically decided to draw inspiration from the aforementioned in order to appeal to the masses (furries, weeaboos, etc.) easily. cheap, in my book. that said they did do a good job of making them seem like legit indigenous tribes. the fact that marines were referred to as being army men at the start would no doubt piss any real marines off, but that's more a nitpick than anything else.

the aircraft design was more than a little awesome, largely because they didn't overdo it and based them heavily on existing craft or concept art for future space shuttles. the native wildlife was alright, perhaps a bit too samey at times but there was some interesting variety and it was also cool to see inspiration drawn from pterodactyls and even two animals at once sometimes (rhino, hammerhead).

visuals were fucking stunning, and the use of 3d helped immensely. it was also a very rare legit use of 3d, which is to say not throwing shit at the audience every five minutes just to wave your dick around

overall, glad i saw it, but also glad i waited for it to become less of a zoo. worth the hype? maybe, maybe not. worth watching? definitely.

and holy fuck, do i wish earth had more phosphorescent flora and fauna.

    TL;DR:

I can testify to that being Rossmum's expression almost 90% of the movie since I saw it with him (again, XD).
