Well, it seems that eventually, this time would come. I would be stupid enough to not back up my HDD, and I would lose everything. I lost the tags, I lost the maps, I lost the textures, I even lost all my logged conversations in Trillian. We have nothing left. I would rip all the tags from one of the maps we released, but I forgot the password.
I managed to find a file on a flash drive that was sitting underneath a pile of burnt DVD-R's labeled "Stuff." It turns out it was a video of some map I was working on a long time ago, called "Maridia."
Here's the video:
It's been fun guys... :(
Update Edit:
This post is to sorta update everything we'll be working on or are already working on:
Maps
We'll be remodeling some of the maps we've already shown you. Derelict will no longer be used as some pseudo spacestation. We have Mirage Station for that, which Lightning is either going to redo from scratch or just alter it to better suit gameplay. Here's what I have on the agenda so far:
.. and there's another Metroid Prime Hunters map I want to do as well. We'll see ..
Weapons (in addition to the ones you've already played with)
We completely overhauled our weapons system. We are using weapons that now can be picked up on the battlefield, and from defeated players. Customize your arsenal! Using the classic Halo weapon system, you can swap out your two beam cannons and mix and match deadly combinations. The HUD system will stay fairly the same, but the icons section on the right will be altered. This will also allow all weapons in all gameplay types, but we might customize the spawn depending on gameplay tests.
Force http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/...55e324ec8a.jpg
Jetboost: Using the flashlight key, you can propel yourself for a short distance using the boosters on your back. This is based on the underwater propulsion used in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
SpeedBoost http://www.gsarchives.net/snes/super...rward_left.gif Use crouch to make Samus go faster! This speed will peak at a certain point slightly faster than normal running speed, and will have an acceleration.
Melee You will be able to perform melee with whatever weapon you have now. Beat your opponents senseless!
So there you have it, that's the current state of Metroid Online. We hope you guys are looking forward to the final release of the mod and our first finished map. We'll try to keep weekly updates a-rollin'.
Wow, this really sucks, I'm sorry to hear that this happened, and I'm sad to know that this project might never be where it was before. I was always looking forward to playing this. Are you sure that no other team members have any of the stuff? If not, then it has been fun, and I hope you continue to mod Halo CE in the time to come.

Well, sorry to disappoint, but the whole map is underwater. We do have a bevy of additional maps that might whet your whistle, however. I guarantee that we'll give you a reason to try our Maridia map when you see it next though.
I once thought Phendrana Shorelines would be our mod's defining map, but I really think Maridia is it. It's got the perfect balance of maneuverability, vertical gameplay, and environmental uniqueness that will set it apart. Not to mention the fact that it will be the first CE map to go fully underwater.
I guess my little spiel only lasted about 45 minutes before you figured me out, but yeah, me and teh lag were working on that map today. I know it's hard to really make out what the map will be like from that video, but since we're still working on the HUD, I wanted to throw you a bone and this was the easiest way for me to do that.

How will you make it so that people aren't constantly holding the crouch key to just run extremely fast all the time?
Also, you could call Fire Deity "Magmoor Station," if you want it to fit more in context with actual Metroid game locations.
And the Flashlight-triggered speed boost seems kind of redundant if you have a bigger, longer crouch-triggered one.

That should probably only work for when you're running straight forward, not strafing... but you probably already thought of that :p
Also, is there a way to give people reduced accuracy while crouching? That might give super speed a bit of a tradeoff to balance it against other abilities

There's a difference between boosting in water (something only available in Maridia) and increasing your speed slightly to help make longer jumps, etc.

Accuracy degradation is a good idea, I'll see what settings are available. It's usually not real comfortable to constantly hold crouch, so I figured unless someone is able to tape their crouch key down, it would be a skillful choice, not a spammed reflex. We'll see, we are not going to release the revised mod without testing, so I believe we should be able to catch stuff that doesn't work in that process. ;)

Re: Metroid Online Presents: Critical HDD Failure
Oh, it's an underwater-only ability. That makes more sense; I thought it could be used everywhere.
Also, maybe you could have the crouch-speeding be more like a sprint, in that it disables weapon firing while in use.

It does work - Offline. Online? It has a cloned morphball that appear behind yours to other players. There's issues with getting in and out (such as a player in a morphball not appearing to be to another player, visa versa), major lag, etc.
Morphballs will also deter from what we are trying to do with the mod - focus on gameplay. Rolling around in a ball is a sheepish way to play the mod. We'd also have to rebuild all our maps to incorporate ways for the morphballs to get around - again, if it was possible to get it working well. It's not, and I have no regrets. I want our focus to be on our weapons, and so it shall be - for good reason. I believe we have a diverse weapon set, not found on any other platform, including the original Metroid games. You can customize your formula for gameplay by swapping beams out to make lethal combos.
You don't have to believe me, in fact, I can understand if you don't, but I really think we'll get it working well and make it a good mod that everyone can enjoy.
Thanks. :D

I played a little bit of Echoes MP (honestly.. did anyone play more than a little bit?) and I thought the morph ball was nothing more than a marvelously effective way to annoy everyone else. Especially with that boost ball shit that did massive damage.

Don't even get me started on alt-spammers from Hunters. Especially the ones who seemed to have mastered aiming Trace's lunge. :phonegonk:
And if you think about it, being in a Morph Ball hasn't really given any combat advantage in Prime or Prime 2 besides those one or two bosses and enemies that can only be killed by getting eaten as the ball and then blowing up a bomb in them. And all alt-spammers do with it in multiplayer is boost around to either run like a little bitch or just piss everyone off because nobody can draw a bead on them long enough to hit them.

The only Metroid game that I've played in Multiplayer was Metroid Prime Hunters (on the DS). The Morph Ball in that game is useful, yet annoying at times, because they were harder to kill. However, their range of movement wasn't as big, so it kind of equals out there. I find that people used it too much though, and it got annoying. So, I think that you should keep it out of this, but it seems that you have already established that.

Actually, I've done quite a few Low % runs, which is trying to get as little as possible through the game as opposed to as much as possible.
But that's off-topic. Will visibility or movement be hindered at all in Maridia, or will it essentially be like any other level with bubbles and an extra jump boost?

I'm guessing you could call the water effects we'll be putting in visibility hindering with a fog plane in it (but it won't actually be water), but other than that, no. As far as movement being hindered, no, just a higher (sort of floaty) jump and the additional jump boost (via flashlight) will be implemented, or is planned to be. Your guns won't be affected by the water either, so no worries about that. We might add some bubbles to replace the smoke behind the missiles, however :D
I guess you'll see more of this before it ships.

We'll see. We'd have to make a map specifically for it. It's not that we can't, but if we were concerned about the "canon" at all, we couldn't have more than one "specifically registered to Samus Aran" ship.

So, she'll be sitting on the ship, with the baby metroid (the one from super metroid I might add), just chilling there?
Also, the intro from Super Metroid shows the Metroid in a lab, in a glass container, surrounded by dead scientists and computers. :confused2:

I believe he was speaking of the landing site after Ceres. Of course, you could easily adapt the SM title screen by having a metroid in a lab, in a glass container, surrounded by dead multicolored Samuses. :v:

For something like a Metroid floating in a jar, you could probably create the illusion with animated textures.

With animated textures, is it a possibility to make the Original ring have
1. Moving clouds?
2. Pulsing blue lines in the metal design?
Thats two things I always thought would sex up the UI for the original theme.

Clouds in the skies are done with animated textures.
And anything else done in shaders is allowed; the blue lines are an illumination map on a shader_environment.
