My winrar trial ran out today, meaning I've already had it for 40 days.
Not a huge difference but it's definitely got a faster boot/shut down speed and has never chugged on me once like it did with Vista.
Only thing I don't have a driver for so far is my speakers, so my bass doesn't work yet :C

- Windows can be dragged behind the god damn taskbar.
- The FUCKING BLINKING ICONS HOLY SHIT. You need to click and remain on the window for 2-3 seconds before it stops flashing. Now try instant messaging...
- Twice my taskbar magically teleported to the top of my screen. It was locked. I could not drag it back down without first unlocking.
- Windows can frequently be dragged on top of the taskbar. Clicking on the taskbar brings it back into focus.
- Explorer crashes daily for me and InnerGoat.
- more than 2 monitors are handled like shit. Renaming an icon for "all users" will cause it to suddenly disappear.
- on a screen with 1050 height, the icons don't fill up the entire height of the screen by default, even though they can manually.
- libraries suck. I want access from my start menu directly to my documents. I want my real folder path in the address bar.
- the search field is buggy in any Explorer window.
- each time you open a new Explorer window, it stacks on top of the old one leading to clutter. Each window position is not stored.
- once a week, Windows will wake itself from sleep and bluescreen.
- twice in the past week my network adapter keep resetting every 10 seconds when I had several Youtube tabs open. Had to disable and re-enable.
- Media Center doesn't record a series schedule even though it says it will. You need to manually choose what you want to record and when.
Windows 7 is pure hype. It's not better than the current state of Vista and the only reasons Windows Vista 2.0 doesn't have as much flack now are because it doesn't bear the same name as Vista and because Windows Vista took the hard hit of having no drivers ready when released that W7 doesn't have to deal with. Windows Vista drivers work fine on 7, but XP drivers didn't work well on Vista.

A lot of jcap's problems I ended up fixing the second I installed Win7. Thanks to you guys running RTM and such, I was able to get a list of shit to do on the OS to prevent such frustration.
Taskbar can be VERY easily modified by right click > properties. This should solve stacking/shit like that. Also, come on. Pinning to taskbar fucking rules.
To avoid libraries, I change all my shortcuts to be the actual directory, not the library herpderp. So, at the bottom left of quick launch, instead of it being "explorer.exe", I run "C:\Users\Yeah yeah\My Documents". Seems to work rather well.
So far, I haven't experienced any bugs/crashes, so I can't say much about that. I'll have to get back to you on Media Center too. I have to say though, the Media Center gadget was the best fucking addition to sidebar/gadgets.
Performance hasn't been a huge change, which concerns me because I moved from 32 to 64-bit with this upgrade. It's nice to have all my RAM now, but it seems not much has changed on memory usage and speed, in game and out.
I expect to have SONAR/Sampletank back by Thanksgiving, so I'll also post about my audio in Win7 when that happens.
Outside of the explorer.exe blowing up some days and being happy on others, and creative's awfulpostingdrivers it's all good :-3
Yeah, I know of the ungrouping option, but it still doesn't fix the other problems with the shitty taskbar like the flashing. Also, I hate how when you show the names of each open window, there is crazy spacing between groups of the same app and different apps. Ugh. Plus, then you can't have any "quicklaunch" items in your taskbar because opening up one app on the left will push everything to the right. Ugh again.Quote:

You can't. I've already done searching. The operating system is too new. Not much of the public has been building bug lists while using it for several months like me. Even if a problem is found, it's too new for a good solutions. To make matters worse, many of the search terms you could use are too broad.

Again, it's not our fault that you can find alternate solutions to the problem. How about you find research around and find an alternate program that works for whatever (useless) thing you're trying to accomplish with TV? People moan and complain when an application runs into compatibility issues instead of looking around and finding a program that actually works in the mean time.
You're complaining about minor issues that only effect a small percentage of users, and you're doing it immediately after the OS was released. Microsoft might be a large company with thousands of employees, but it takes time to fix issues.

My gripe with this operating system is not just related to Media Center. It goes back to that other post where I mentioned all those bugs in the RTM version. I know this OS is new, but there's no reason these problems should have developed after Windows Vista (IT'S A FUCKING CLONE FOR FUCK'S SAKE) and then make it through beta, RC, and then into RTM. Perhaps it's my fault for not reporting bugs...but it's their fault for not providing any method of reporting bugs in the RC.
As for my Media Center problem, please give me some other free application which will let me watch, record, and schedule series recordings of live TV. Also, this is native to Windows. It's not a "compatibility issue" I'm having here. If it is, it's pretty fucking pathetic that Microsoft can ship Windows 7 with software that isn't compatible with itself.
A small percentage of users is millions. Even if it is just one person using a feature, they shouldn't have problems with it. It is never "OK" to let a problem go because it's not going to be as used as something else.
What I'm mainly pissed off about is how everyone talks about Windows 7 like is a god damn religion. Jesus fucking Christ people, this OS is not perfect. If you install Windows Vista today, it's much more stable and bug-free than this.
jcap, the problems seem to be all on your end, I have a buddy who uses a tv tuner card and records tv with his windows 7 machine, and myself still on build 7100 haven't had any problems.

I can record fine with W7. I've actually run into the PlayReady problem only 3 times, all which were in the past 3 weeks. I once ran into it while I tried watching a movie (it would show for 5 seconds, then go to the PlayReady screen), another time while watching CSI, and another time while while watching commercials on Discovery.
I believe my schedule problem only occurs when I have it set to record only new episodes of a series under the recording settings.
Sounds like problems with third party software and drivers than anything else. That doesn't mean Windows 7 is bad.
Of course there will be compatibility issues this thing just came out.
I can't stand all of those people yelling "there's no reason to upgrade from Windows XP, it's more stable and is more hardened blah blah blah". These people stand in the way of progress. People said the same fucking thing about XP when it came out too. You have to take these kind of things in steps, and you can't expect the first version to be fucking perfect for your individual needs. Similar things can be said for Vista.
A friend of mine has had 0 problems with Windows 7 Media Center and TV tuner recording or watching... Must be some unique issue with your hardware.
Results may vary.
i hated vista with a passion and stuck with XP throughout it all but i myself have looked around and i'm really happy with windows 7.
I think it's what vista should have been and jcap your problems seem isolated, because i dont see or hear about other people jumping up and down about these kinds of issues like we did with vista.
Well, I have an HP media center PC with a Hauppage HD tuner, I haven't had any problems with it; not to say i have not had other problems with 7. I do think Windows 7 feels more like a real launch than Vista did; they have had a while now to fix shit. My entire proprietary PC worked out of the box; 64 bit to boot; damn nice from Microsoft I would say.
Honestly I paid 29.99 for it, so if it wasn't to my liking it cost me no more than a 3 year old game would; I am OK with losing that amount of money on a testbed if I don't like a product.
It's not an isolated problem if none of you are even using it the same way I am. I'l tell you 100% that it is not a hardware issue. It just isn't logical. Why can I watch TV and manually record if it is hardware-related?
EDIT: Right now, I'm messing around with recordings. Yesterday, I tried scheduling a one-time recording of a two hour long program and it began recording one hour and 30 mins into it. So, I cleared out my entire schedule now and set just one program to record. It started recording at the set time. That would explain how I managed to pull off some scheduled recordings back when I had only one. Maybe the bug comes from having too many (I had like 5...not many at all) scheduled programs. None conflicted, but none recorded.
And I do believe the recording problem is independent of the PlayReady problem.
No, I believe it may be some half baked DRM, I just have yet to run into it as I do not have a digital subscription. I do realize that you may need a Cable Card to access some things, but this has all been covered so may not be your issue. There are several folks out there right now building DRM friendly Cable Card setups, but it is an ugly world.
edit: also, if you had been having trouble with HBO, or Cinemax I wouldn't be as surprised as having one of your Locals blacked out....that's just fucked up.

With regard to the DRM crap, yeah, local channels get blocked out. It's happened twice while watching CBS. It also happened one time when I was channel surfing to TBS which was running a movie.
To make it shittier, all the times I've experienced it have been with live TV. It'd expect it to maybe pop up and say I can't record the program if I attempt to, or maybe pop over recorded video, but it doesn't do that.

Yeah, the sleep issue was one I had as well, but since I have done a fresh install now, and d/l all updates, (knocking on wood here) it has woken up ok every time now. I don't know what the cause was, but I as well as several friends had the same issue since installing the original RC. You have to be ignorant to not realize that Vista is to W7 as XP was to Vista when it was first released (minus driver bugs). Sure, maybe some of Vista's bugs were a little more severe and seen by everyone, such as it hanging on shutdown or random COM Surrogate and Explorer crashing (heh, some things still don't change with W7), but overall, I'd still say that there was a fair tradeoff with W7.
